Would we fit in near you?

Hi,

my partner and I are trying to figure out where to move to and we are so confused! We just keep going in circles and then feeling really defeated. So I was wondering if MNetters of the uk could recommend your area or an area you know that might work for us…

I hope we don’t come off too badly here… I get really nervous posting questions like this!

I’ll try to keep it brief, but this is our situation:

we’re late 30s, have two under 5s, we’re academic, work in education/ arts and I think we’re in that “middle earners” bracket, we’re first time buyers and our budget is about 700,000. Both dp and I are neurodivergent, we currently live in a nice part of north London and have found the city more accessible than the countryside, where we both grew up. We love the culture in London: galleries, independent cinemas, etc and the huge choice of ways to spend time. We like the idea of raising our children here.

that said, we love the countryside and go there a lot at weekends and for holidays. I grew up on a farm and loved that aspect of childhood. I always thought I’d move back when I had children. Part of me would like my children to grow up there. Our budget also goes further and the places we can afford often seem a lot nicer.

we can’t stay living where we are for much longer as our rental is tiny and once we go we are totally priced out of our current area.

Our criteria is typically impossible to fulfill: we want to be walkable to wild feeling green space, have good state schools nearby, have an interesting high street or town centre within 15 minutes drive or walk (bookshops, cinemas, cosy pubs, swimming pool). We would like to be able to commute into central London once a week for work and at weekends a couple of times a month as a family (although this isn’t essential). We’d like to be within a three hour drive of Bristol for family. We’d like to live somewhere fairly pretty. Good transport links for the children as they get older.. we’re after a 3 bed with a garden. A drive way would be a huge pro. And we’d like to fit in. Where we live at the moment is very pretty, but we’re surrounded by the mega wealthy and have found it hard to make friends.

I fully realise we’re asking for a lot and we will have to compromise.

Id just love to hear some positive stories of people like us who have managed to find “home”

we’re open to all parts of London and the surrounding countryside. We’ve also looked further afield including Cornwall and Cumbria.

thanks in advance 🙂

Thame/haddenham for countryside and easy reach of London. Close to Oxford for culture. Decent schools afaik

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 10/02/2024 16:55

Look at Bucks or Hertfordshire especially

Tring
Berkhamsted
Hitchin
St Albans
Amersham
Chesham
Beaconsfield

And surrounding villages of each.

All fit your criteria although it will be difficult to find a decent house in St Albans or Beaconsfield with that budget.

lilsupersparks · 10/02/2024 16:57

Somewhere near Chippenham (perhaps Lacock - around that area) or Westbury - not sure about the nicer places over there - Dilton Marsh?

Frome if the commute is not such a big deal - it’s doable but being on the trainline would help. Saying that, we live in that area and my husband semi regularly commutes to London and Guernsey in a day with no trouble.

Bradford on Avon is pretty and Bath has the town-y stuff you want.

Eightfour · 10/02/2024 16:59

I wouldn’t say Beaconsfield for two people in their 30s with young children honestly - it seems to have an older more conservative demographic.

OolongTeaDrinker · 10/02/2024 16:59

How about Hampton Hill - great high street, lots of green spaces near by and great state schools:

fruitypancake · 10/02/2024 16:59

Southbourne , Dorset . On the beach and close to nearby New Forest - lovely high street , lots going on - 1.5 hours into central London

UnimaginableWindBird · 10/02/2024 17:00

I would have said York, but the easy journey to London is less reliable now with the train strikes, and I suspect that travel to Bristol would take too long.

rockpoolingtogether · 10/02/2024 17:03

Possibly somewhere near Cambridge? Would Ely suit? It's a nice town with interesting shops etc, close to Cambridge and commutable once a week to London

TheSnakeCharmer · 10/02/2024 17:06

Winchester would be another good suggestion.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 10/02/2024 17:09

@TheSnakeCharmer wow ! 4 very different properties. Are you an estate agent ? If not you are really good at finding different suggestions.

I love the 2nd one in Clifton, had to look twice - trying to figure out if they have 2 cats or one very friendly one :)

sorry to hijack post :)

I think Bath and or Bristol could suit your needs.

Belper in Derbyshire, though it can be about 3.5 hours to Bristol at popular travelling times, it's usually 2 h 45ish. The high street is a proper one with a range of cuisines including vegan etc and a couple of large supermarkets. Schools mostly well regarded. Swimming pool which I think is council run. 25 mins drive to Derby with trains taking 90 mins from there into St Pancras, or 15 mins on the train to Derby as Belper does have its own train station too. Easy access to Sheffield / Notts too.

Derby is one of the cities with the most ND people (probably due to historically having huge engineering companies like Bombardier and Royces with roles that suit people who thrive on order, routine)

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/142087316#/?channel=RESBUY this is about a 20 minute walk from town centre / station.

Edited

I came on to suggest the same, you beat me to it!
Belper is a lovely town OP. It fits many of the criteria you're looking for but I'm not sure how often you'd need a city fix as the bigger cities such as Nottingham & Manchester are quite a trek.

adriennemole · 10/02/2024 17:15

We’e just outside of Cambridge and I was also thinking of Ely. Lovely little place with a cathedral, market, great independent shops and pubs but close to Cambridge and central train station for London.
Lots of green space and lovely walks around too. I’d love to be able to move there myself one day.

WaitingForSunnyDays · 10/02/2024 17:16

I'll second Caversham. Quite a few independent shops in Caversham itself and easy to get into Reading for larger retailers. If you like classical music there are world class performers at the Concerts in Caversham each year - and of course Reading Festival at the opposite end of the spectrum! Some wonderful pubs for food as well, particularly just over the border in South Oxfordshire.

House prices vary a lot according to the exact location and the age of the house, but these are some examples.

Walkable to green open space.
Good primary & secondary state schools.
Interesting & good high street with cinema, pubs, gym, etc within walking distance.
Reasonable commute to central London & good transport links.
Pretty area.

The only places I can think of are in London but too ££££ or Home Counties but again to be close to high street/transport is ££££.

Interesting to see what others suggest

sorestupid · 10/02/2024 17:17

I suppose it depends on how good you want the schools to be?

sorestupid · 10/02/2024 17:20

Personally I think if you are used to the convenience of North London it's quite difficult to get your head around driving everywhere.

Notellinganyone · 10/02/2024 17:21

Wowzel · 10/02/2024 15:12

We lived in NE London and are now in Reading, really happy there!

Bristol. Has everything you need and you’ll get a decent house for that budget.

Jessforless · 10/02/2024 17:23

I 2nd Epsom, everything you need.

Yogatoga1 · 10/02/2024 17:24

We love the culture in London: galleries, independent cinemas, etc and the huge choice of ways to spend time

other cities also have these things.

if you move somewhere and tell people how wonderful London is and how it has x,y and z you won’t fit in at all- looking at you sil.

i prefer Manchester to London. All the culture, museums, galleries, independent cinemas etc in a much smaller area so even more accessible. Trams and buses everywhere. Peaks and dales, and the lakes within east reach.

Just about 3 hours of Bristol. I don’t know liverpool as well but also seems to have plenty going on, I’ve really enjoyed recent visits.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 10/02/2024 17:25

East Sussex. Not within 3 hrs of Bristol though.

Pleiades2020 · 10/02/2024 17:28

Salisbury? Direct trains to London (1.5 hours) and Bristol.

Inextremis · 10/02/2024 17:32

Hove - might be a bit far from Bristol, but there are good train links. There's a couple of properties within your budget for sale in Woodland Avenue, which is very close to the Downs and even closer to the Three-Cornered Copse. Close enough to Brighton and all its Bohemian nuttiness, but a lot quieter. Easy access to London Victoria or London Bridge by train.

paisley256 · 10/02/2024 17:33

Somewhere like Epping Forset? You're on the Central Line but also surrounded by countryside and forests.

Crikeyalmighty · 10/02/2024 17:34

Here's examples of what you could get in Bath - in budget- a couple a lot under budget OP- great retail chain and independent, bars, venues, cafes , restaurants, parks and galleries galore, very good schools , great train route (86 minutes) , very handy for Bristol (10 mins on train)
