Would we fit in near you?

Hi,

my partner and I are trying to figure out where to move to and we are so confused! We just keep going in circles and then feeling really defeated. So I was wondering if MNetters of the uk could recommend your area or an area you know that might work for us…

I hope we don’t come off too badly here… I get really nervous posting questions like this!

I’ll try to keep it brief, but this is our situation:

we’re late 30s, have two under 5s, we’re academic, work in education/ arts and I think we’re in that “middle earners” bracket, we’re first time buyers and our budget is about 700,000. Both dp and I are neurodivergent, we currently live in a nice part of north London and have found the city more accessible than the countryside, where we both grew up. We love the culture in London: galleries, independent cinemas, etc and the huge choice of ways to spend time. We like the idea of raising our children here.

that said, we love the countryside and go there a lot at weekends and for holidays. I grew up on a farm and loved that aspect of childhood. I always thought I’d move back when I had children. Part of me would like my children to grow up there. Our budget also goes further and the places we can afford often seem a lot nicer.

we can’t stay living where we are for much longer as our rental is tiny and once we go we are totally priced out of our current area.

Our criteria is typically impossible to fulfill: we want to be walkable to wild feeling green space, have good state schools nearby, have an interesting high street or town centre within 15 minutes drive or walk (bookshops, cinemas, cosy pubs, swimming pool). We would like to be able to commute into central London once a week for work and at weekends a couple of times a month as a family (although this isn’t essential). We’d like to be within a three hour drive of Bristol for family. We’d like to live somewhere fairly pretty. Good transport links for the children as they get older.. we’re after a 3 bed with a garden. A drive way would be a huge pro. And we’d like to fit in. Where we live at the moment is very pretty, but we’re surrounded by the mega wealthy and have found it hard to make friends.

I fully realise we’re asking for a lot and we will have to compromise.

Id just love to hear some positive stories of people like us who have managed to find “home”

we’re open to all parts of London and the surrounding countryside. We’ve also looked further afield including Cornwall and Cumbria.

thanks in advance 🙂

I would live in Oxford if I could. Really wonderful city (as long as you don’t need to drive!)

lanesra01 · 10/02/2024 20:11

Rickmansworth or Chorleywood

both on the met line and get to London quickly but have lovely village feels with green spaces

bigeye wouldn’t get you a mansion but a decent semi with a garden I’m sure

Where I live ticked all the boxes until I read the bit about commuting to London and Bristol. We're within walking distance of the sea with a lovely promenade,a lovely thriving high street with independent shops and cafes,2 bookshops within walking distance, restaurants, and a cinema.National Trust property nearby(walkable with lovely woodland walks.A riverside walk very close.A large park with a pond and a variety of dicks and a resident otter.7 minutes by train into the city centre.

I'm intrigued! Please could you share where you mean? Thanks 😊

Fabvegetablegrower · 10/02/2024 20:34

Fleet in Hampshire. The high street isn't pretty though.

What about St Albans.

Budget is too low.

Kenilworth springs to mind for me. No cinema but close to Stratford Upon Avon, Warwick etc. Transport links are good and the surrounding countryside is lovely. It ticks all boxes, with the local secondary recently being rated as 'Outstanding'. As a result, house prices have shot up recently though.

St Albans is very nice

Tillow4ever · 10/02/2024 20:39

Have you looked at Rutland? The schools are excellent, no trouble to speak of, nice little pubs, independent shops, short drive to a town with an Olympic sized swimming pool with children's play area, a multi screen cinema and lots of larger shops, close to Leicester and Peterborough for city life, 15/20 mins from the A1.

We don't have lots of amenities but it is a nice place to raise children in.

Bleberry · 10/02/2024 20:39

Malvern. The train goes in to Paddington, has a lovely theatre, beautiful old buildings in the town, swimming pool, stunning hills. Plus a short journey to Worcestor or Birmingham for more shops.

Cocacolacarrie · 10/02/2024 20:42

With £700k you could buy two 3 bed semis with gardens and drives where I live!

Lots of countryside, not quite so much culture 😆

AvocadoSurprise · 10/02/2024 20:55

Have you thought about Bath? Near Bristol, both have lots of culture. An hour & a bit direct train to central London. Fabulous countryside all around. Good selection independent shops etc. Not sure about schools but maybe someone else could tell you about that.

AvocadoSurprise · 10/02/2024 20:57

Or maybe Oxford for similar reasons?

SqueakyShouts · 10/02/2024 21:02

sorestupid · 10/02/2024 18:41

Caterham/Warlingham/Kenley

You really think these areas fit the OPs wish list?

Yes or else I wouldn't have suggested it. Recently lived near there.

£700k gets you a 3 bed semi with drive and garden.

Plenty of ND friends and children in that the area.

15 minutes drive to a lot of places. Reigate/Oxted for example for the high streets (although houses more expensive there hence why I didnt suggest)

Plenty of woodland walks.

Less than 3 hours to Bristol.

Trains to London.

Sdpbody · 10/02/2024 21:02

Worcester or Cheltenham. £700k will go further in Worcester.

Itookheroutitwasafridaynight · 10/02/2024 21:15

Definitely have a look at Kent. There are lots of nice villages within a 15 minute drive to Ebbsfleet international which is then 17 minutes in St Pancras. It means you get the countryside lifestyle but are so close to London that it doesn’t feel like a big journey every time you have to go in. Fawkham, New Barn and Meopham are lovely and I’d think they’d be within your budget.

dizzydizzydizzy · 10/02/2024 21:15

Bristol, Bath and Oxford are the most obvious options.

wgll · 10/02/2024 21:20

Personally, I’d consider staying in the London especially as so many companies are currently rapidly changing their WFH/office requirements.

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/143394569#/?channel=RES_BUY - only 200M to an independent bookshop and you won’t have to spend all your time calculating if the train times home mean going to the theatre is more bother than it’s worth. Oh and if you miss the train home, there’ll be another one in 3 minutes.

sorestupid · 10/02/2024 21:30

@SqueakyShouts you don't need 700k to buy a 3 bed & garden in those areas though. And I wouldn't say the high streets are particularly interesting. The train service to Caterham can be pretty unreliable so I'm not sure that fits great transport for the dc when they are older. With the OPs budget she can get much better.

sorestupid · 10/02/2024 21:32

@Eightfour I do get suggesting one's own area when it fits the brief it's the ones that don't that confuses me.

I got out as soon as I could…

What didn't you like?

Nevermind91 · 10/02/2024 22:03

CircleofWillis · 10/02/2024 15:31

Not impossible in East London. This is close to your budget.

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/144297509#/?channel=RES_BUY

Wow! That would set you back about £160,000 round here (West Wales).

mitogoshi · 10/02/2024 23:18

Bristol then. Your budget won't get you certain post codes but most are ok. Or live outside the city - I live on the coast, with an outdoor pool, beach, good schools etc. London is currently a case of driving to parkway then taking an intercity but 2026 we get a station (3 years late!) Backwell is another option, good school and on the mainline, there's a direct London train

Unfortunately what they want is Stroud 10 years ago, very little left now! Although we do still have some independent bookshops and nice pubs I suppose. I’d recommend the villages around Stroud rather than Stroud itself, then you can come in for the markets or when there’s interesting events on and avoid it the rest of the time.

I know Stroud has suffered a bit especially post pandemic but the farmer's market is still good and there are still some nice shops and cafes including an independent bookshop. I think that in comparison to many other towns It still has lots to offer. It also has a really good fast train line to Paddington (about 1hr 30 ish iirc) and is an hour or so drive from Bristol. There are some excellent primary schools in the area and a mix of both comprehensives and state grammar schools for secondary.
There are still a good range of social and cultural activities happening, especially now the Sub Rooms is in new hands

I agree that a village setting might suit the op better, but there are quite a few within a couple of miles of Stroud so still easy access to station etc.

The surrounding areas are extremely beautiful with so many common walks overlooking the Cotswold scarp with views of the Severn valley and even over to Wales. The Cotswold way passes through and there is masses of woodland to walk in managed by National Trust and Woodland Trust.

I'd possibly look at Randwick or Whiteshill but also parts of Cashes Green as although it is mainly modern housing, Foxmoor Primary is very good.
