Would we fit in near you?

Hi,

my partner and I are trying to figure out where to move to and we are so confused! We just keep going in circles and then feeling really defeated. So I was wondering if MNetters of the uk could recommend your area or an area you know that might work for us…

I hope we don’t come off too badly here… I get really nervous posting questions like this!

I’ll try to keep it brief, but this is our situation:

we’re late 30s, have two under 5s, we’re academic, work in education/ arts and I think we’re in that “middle earners” bracket, we’re first time buyers and our budget is about 700,000. Both dp and I are neurodivergent, we currently live in a nice part of north London and have found the city more accessible than the countryside, where we both grew up. We love the culture in London: galleries, independent cinemas, etc and the huge choice of ways to spend time. We like the idea of raising our children here.

that said, we love the countryside and go there a lot at weekends and for holidays. I grew up on a farm and loved that aspect of childhood. I always thought I’d move back when I had children. Part of me would like my children to grow up there. Our budget also goes further and the places we can afford often seem a lot nicer.

we can’t stay living where we are for much longer as our rental is tiny and once we go we are totally priced out of our current area.

Our criteria is typically impossible to fulfill: we want to be walkable to wild feeling green space, have good state schools nearby, have an interesting high street or town centre within 15 minutes drive or walk (bookshops, cinemas, cosy pubs, swimming pool). We would like to be able to commute into central London once a week for work and at weekends a couple of times a month as a family (although this isn’t essential). We’d like to be within a three hour drive of Bristol for family. We’d like to live somewhere fairly pretty. Good transport links for the children as they get older.. we’re after a 3 bed with a garden. A drive way would be a huge pro. And we’d like to fit in. Where we live at the moment is very pretty, but we’re surrounded by the mega wealthy and have found it hard to make friends.

I fully realise we’re asking for a lot and we will have to compromise.

Id just love to hear some positive stories of people like us who have managed to find “home”

we’re open to all parts of London and the surrounding countryside. We’ve also looked further afield including Cornwall and Cumbria.

thanks in advance 🙂

Bath. You can get family houses for your budget. Small city with loads of culture and academics! Lovely state schools, commutable to London and close to bristol. Oh and you can see the countryside from the city centre. There are also lovely villages within and close to the city, eg larkhall, batheaston. You might also like frome?

icallitasplodge · 10/02/2024 15:52

Jokes aside I hear canvey island is actually getting better.

if I were OP I’d pick Canterbury personally. Seriously, it’s lovely.

RogueFemale · 10/02/2024 15:52

Oxford ticks all the boxes. There are many large semi-rural areas even within the ring road, easy access to London and Bristol.

Dmsandfloatydress · 10/02/2024 15:53

Lewes is the obvious choice for your family. It's arty, leftie liberal, middle class/affluent. Very lentil weaving kind of a place. Right up your street and you can commute to London.

PinkyBlueMe · 10/02/2024 15:57

Surrey Heath villages such as Lightwater (has the country park), Windlesham or Bagshot (v close to Swinley forest). If you then drive to Brookwood you can get a train into London easily. Nearby shopping areas include Farnham and Guildford both being about 25 mins away.

Crikeyalmighty · 10/02/2024 15:58

We live in Bath- you would definitely fit in

Overtheatlantic · 10/02/2024 15:58

Oxford really does tick your boxes.

PinkyBlueMe · 10/02/2024 15:58

Also Camberley and Bracknell are both 10 mins away and have cinemas and pools though not as "naice" as Farnham or Guildford.

Skiphopbump · 10/02/2024 15:59

What about St Albans.

Movinghouseatlast · 10/02/2024 16:00

Have a look at Epsom, specifically round the College Area. I lived there very happily for over 20 years. It really is the best of both worlds- it feels quite villagey, you can walk to amazing countryside or the town centre in 15 minutes. London is only 38 minutes on the train.

aitchteeaitch · 10/02/2024 16:03

Letchworth Garden City

Zippedydoodahday · 10/02/2024 16:04

This house has everything except the drive. I'm sure you'd get one with a drive though as most in the area do. 5 minute walk to thousands of acres of ancient woodland. You can walk for hours on end. Short walk to a nice little high street.

There's are two pools nearby.

Good transport connections.

Excellent state schools.

Tringgirl · 10/02/2024 16:05

Yes you would fit right in in Tring, Herts. Most of the parents we meet are just like you, similar budget, background etc and it's a small close-knit town with incredible schools, a lot of community and no anti social behaviour.

Teaxberspet · 10/02/2024 16:06

Horsham, Crawley, Worthing Chichester

Ilovemyshed · 10/02/2024 16:07

I would look in the Oxford - Cambridge corridor. Also round Buckingham or West of Northampton.

Hemax1 · 10/02/2024 16:10

How about the north east ? Obviously not a three hour drive but there are decent train links to Bristol and it’s also on main line to London.

you’d get a lot of house for your money with garden, garage and drive and there are some decent state schools around.

countryside and seaside are drivable distances and in the suburbs you can be out in the countryside very quickly.

rainbowstardrops · 10/02/2024 16:11

West Sussex/Dorset way?

TousBous · 10/02/2024 16:14

Oxford or Cambridge are great places to live if you are culture vultures.

Itwasmeinthebox · 10/02/2024 16:30

So many places to choose from! Bucks is nice? Not so built up, easy to get to London and Bristol?

cheapskatemum · 10/02/2024 16:40

I immediately thought of Cambridge. Property is expensive in the centre, so your £700,000 wouldn't buy you much there, but out by the park & rides you'd get a nice family house eg Longstanton, & still easily be able to get in & out of the city, where there are lots of cultural activities. Trainline to London, good schools, countryside on your doorstep.

mfbx5sf3 · 10/02/2024 16:43

The peaks edge of Sheffield.

Eightfour · 10/02/2024 16:47

Have a look at Caversham (part of/next to Reading) you have all the amenities of Reading which has a big theatre and a few smaller arts venues, independent cinema (newly opened, very nice), some independent restaurants and shops, recently redone leisure facilities, fab Lido. It’s a bit more leafy than Reading and easy access to countryside around. Lovely walks along the Thames. Close to M4 for Bristol, easy commute to London on the Elizabeth Line. Reading town centre is a bit grotty in places but a lot of money is being spent at the moment.

TheSnakeCharmer · 10/02/2024 16:49

I was going to suggest Bristol. We live in a large village surrounded by fields/parklands 2 miles from the centre. Door to door to the centre takes 10 mins or 20 mins by bike, yet access to the countryside is great. It's not a cheap city, but there are things within your budget where I live.
Another option could be Bath or Frome. It's a reasonably quick journey by train to london paddington from Frome (1 HR 10 mins).
