I went to a strangers house last night ...

It was a friend of a friend type of thing who was hosting a beauty event. OMG her house was amazing. Probably valued around £2m, it was immaculate. Enough space to have not any clutter, a walk in shoes & coats cupboard, minimalistic, absolutely everything matching, all decor finished to a high spec. It was like a magazine show home. We have a fairly decent modern house, new kitchen installed last year, but it made me want to come home and rip out my new kitchen and everything else in my house and start again. Whereas I cant do that, I have cleared the very little clutter we had hanging around and this weekend will be doing a huge clean just to make everything smell/look/feel fresh. Will treat myself to some flowers too. The owner of the house was also immaculate. Slim, lovely manicured nails, softly spoken. I looked at myself - a little overweight, wearing a bobbled top with leggings and a tatty old pair of trainers (which I wouldn't usually ever wear, I put the wrong pair on by mistake).

I want to bin off work today and crack on with the house. And then go and buy myself the same lovely smelling Neom diffuser this house had, but it's £45 and I cannot ever justify that cost for a diffuser.

A few people have mentioned OCD: Living minimalist with everything stored just-so would trigger my OCD big time. I find a bit of chaos quite soothing, weirdly!

sockinapot · 09/02/2024 17:19

You don’t need a Neom diffuser. Open the windows, no disgusting carpets and clean your house!

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 09/02/2024 17:20

Neom have good sales btw. If that info helps at all!

I'd imagine that something or somebody in this person's life is shit, or may one day be. I've known a woman with a 'perfect' home, and her marriage was a sham - she wanted to keep the 'exquisite period home' more than to acknowledge that she was unhappily married. Another wealthy woman, a colleague, with an enviable life and exquisite home whose son died of drug overdose, I didn't even know he was an addict. Don't stress over it.

babyproblems · 09/02/2024 17:28

To all those saying comparison is the their of joy - not if it inspires you it isn’t! I love visiting places that will shake me a bit like this and inspire me to make changes. I’d buy the neom diffuser op! If it helped keep my house tidy and orderly and improved my quality of life day to day it’s actually quite good value tbh 😂

usedtobeasizeten · 09/02/2024 17:28

Maybe she suffers from crippling anxiety!

Or why can’t she be deliriously happy in her beautiful, happy, filled with love home?

Goldenbrowntexturelikesun · 09/02/2024 17:39

My best friend has a similar house and tbh I am far from envious because it’s the most un-cosy, minimalist home, everywhere is white and glass.
My other friend is an artist and her home is the one I truly envy. It has an eclectic mix of styles, colours and fabrics and is a real home imo, I’m so, so comfortable there.

NoOrdinaryMorning · 09/02/2024 17:46

I purposely have everything unmatching in my home! Solid oak display cabinet and pine sideboard etc. It's all beautiful quality but altogether it creates its own cosy style. Can’t imagine having everything matching Confused No soul

Illbebythesea · 09/02/2024 18:43

God I do find this sort of nonsense tedious, sorry op. It really means nothing… very, very few people will have 2million pound homes. It’s normal to feel a bit of oh wow I wish I could live in a house like this! But it should stop at that. Appreciate what you have, which sounds like a lovely house.

I’m disappointed — I thought the title indicated a very different type of post, more like ‘I went to a stranger’s house last night… NAKED UNDER MY TRENCHCOAT’ or ‘… AND REARRANGED ALL THEIR PICTURES BEFORE EXITING THROUGH THE WINDOW’.

Minimalism and Nemo diffusers aren’t really cutting it.

This is very much what I expected too. A Nemo diffuser would be fab though and I'd buy one after I'd sobered up at home after I'd rearranged all the pictures and fallen knickerless in the shrubbery.

I film in multi million pound location homes and the ones that are minimalist are so soulless. One of them had zero personal decor. It had been very beautifully "done" by an interior designer but the was nothing homely or individual about it. It felt really sad. There were four kids too and NOTHING would hint that any children lived there. That's not a home.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 09/02/2024 18:46

Stop it! 🤔 How does one "put the wrong tatty trainers on by mistake" when going to a millionaires home.

Ap24 · 09/02/2024 18:48

I love a bit of inspiration to get out of a rut. I met a lady a few years back who always had the most lovely put together outfits. I started buying more expensive pieces that flatter my figure rather than fast fashion and I've never looked back. I buy plenty of stuff secondhand and spend far less now but I wear designer/good quality that makes me feel good.

Obviously you can't change the house completely but some inspiration to ditch the clutter and be more mindful of what you buy can be a really good thing.

Why the need to criticise what other people choose to do with their homes? Confused

I’m picturing Amanda from Motherland as your host!

Yes hopefully the OP wasn't eating out of her bin 🤣

BobbyBiscuits · 09/02/2024 18:58

When you say you went to a beauty event was she trying to sell you an MLM scheme? A lot of this is smoke and mirrors and they rent a nice house to show off, etc. 99% of people who do that will lose money. Regardless of context, do not compare yourself to this person who you don't even know. She could have a cheating partner, vast debt, several personality disorders, abusive family and a terminal disease. No-one is perfect. Don't believe the hype.

You sound much more fun than she does. I love a woman in a bobbled top and leggings. People who have houses where everything matches are suspicious! Where are the books? The torn out recipes and the stuff?!

How on earth do you know that from her post? This was obviously a marketing thing so the house would have been spotless for that but how do you know she is more fun? Do not get the need to put others down to make people feel better. And how do you know?

To be fair I kind of recognise what the op is saying, I’ve a neighbour whose house is valued at 4m. She is an interior designer. Fuck me it’s gorgeous. And massive. Her hall is bigger than my living room. And mines not small. Her taste is one of quiet elegance. It’s all creams , pale woods, and muted colours. Even her picture frames are not the cheapo ones from Amazon I buy! She also has fresh flowers, huge vases with a few tall stems all year round.

i do sometimes find myself thinking would she have this in her house if I’m buying something, 😂

I also remember years ago, going into a parents house of one of my child’s friends, and literally standing there gaping. It was like my mind and body froze. I’d literally never seen anything as nice.

Is your neighbour Sophie Paterson? I subscribe to her channel, her house is like you describe, stunning! She is the spit of The Princess of Wales and comes across as such a lovely person, she is so talented, love her house!

It is only a mismatched ambition. It is not your call in life, do not copy anyone's life, especially the one who needs materialism and what money can buy to make you envious. This honestly speaks volumes about your values, self-esteem or the lack of it and all sorts. There is only one of you on this planet, live like it

How do you know there is no soul in that house? Matching doesn’t mean everything has to be grey and white with a splash of colour in a cushion pillow.

The house op described sounds lovely. I’m sure yours is too.

TakeMe2Insanity · 09/02/2024 09:55

The fact she was hosting friends of friends (strangers) to her house for an event would have suggested massive declutter or everything hidden in a locked room!

Agree comparison is the thief of joy.

No it doesn't, what an odd thing to say 🤷‍♀️

Mention of naked under a raincoat... I met a new bf naked but for a coat and high boots. Felt an absolute disgrace as I popped into Morrison's for a bottle of wine first!!

Back in the day (a l o o o o o n g) time ago I had a very resplendent fake ocelot coat. I did once turn up at a boyfriend's flat in said coat with very sexy stockings on underneath and fuck all else.

Them were the days.

Very odd. Get rid of all clutter and you rarely need to tidy.

GreatGateauxsby · 09/02/2024 19:14

She can’t be doing all that well if she’s holding MLM hun events in her house 🤨

mathanxiety · 09/02/2024 19:19

There's no harm in finding inspiration for positive changes in other people's homes or lifestyles.
