I went to a strangers house last night ...

It was a friend of a friend type of thing who was hosting a beauty event. OMG her house was amazing. Probably valued around £2m, it was immaculate. Enough space to have not any clutter, a walk in shoes & coats cupboard, minimalistic, absolutely everything matching, all decor finished to a high spec. It was like a magazine show home. We have a fairly decent modern house, new kitchen installed last year, but it made me want to come home and rip out my new kitchen and everything else in my house and start again. Whereas I cant do that, I have cleared the very little clutter we had hanging around and this weekend will be doing a huge clean just to make everything smell/look/feel fresh. Will treat myself to some flowers too. The owner of the house was also immaculate. Slim, lovely manicured nails, softly spoken. I looked at myself - a little overweight, wearing a bobbled top with leggings and a tatty old pair of trainers (which I wouldn't usually ever wear, I put the wrong pair on by mistake).

I want to bin off work today and crack on with the house. And then go and buy myself the same lovely smelling Neom diffuser this house had, but it's £45 and I cannot ever justify that cost for a diffuser.

Errr... she was hosting a "beauty event"? And getting people to bring friends of friends along? Sounds like she's in an MLM. Which is not an enviable position.

LadyKenya · 09/02/2024 10:25

I have a Neom diffuser, and a candle. The diffuser is not worth the money, imo. The candle is nice enough.

Good point.

ps, not quite sure how you put the wrong trainers on by mistake?

I do this sometimes if I’m in a rush - just automatically put on the rather tatty everyday footwear I’m used to, only to remember halfway there that I meant to dig out the smarter pair of boots etc. that I don’t wear very often!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 09/02/2024 10:27

I’m with @OnOtherPlanets here, I was expecting wild sex or at least criminal behaviour.
get a glade plug in, have a tidy up, keep your nice trainers by the front door.

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 09/02/2024 10:33

There's no harm in being inspired by what you saw op.

Make a list and get cracking on all those little things you want done.

😊

peachgreen · 09/02/2024 10:37

Now I want a diffuser, dammit.

IggOrEgg · 09/02/2024 10:37

Comparison is the thief of joy and all that yadda yadda BUT if this has given you a well-needed boot up the arse to care more about yourself, your appearance and your home, I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. It doesn’t all need doing this minute but it’s good imo to have goals! You can find yourself in a rut sometimes and a nudge out of that can be great.

blinkofaneye90 · 09/02/2024 10:46

@IggOrEgg Oh yes ! It's made me take a long hard look at both myself and the house. Short term goals are to get rid of any crap, clean/fresh lines type-of-thing. Longer ones are to lose weight and start making more of an effort with my appearance

It often seem that the nicer things people have , the less they are satisfied with them . The lady with the lovely house will also likely want to improve things

notanothernana · 09/02/2024 11:02

Her shit will still stink.

Janetime · 09/02/2024 11:13

To be fair I kind of recognise what the op is saying, I’ve a neighbour whose house is valued at 4m. She is an interior designer. Fuck me it’s gorgeous. And massive. Her hall is bigger than my living room. And mines not small. Her taste is one of quiet elegance. It’s all creams , pale woods, and muted colours. Even her picture frames are not the cheapo ones from Amazon I buy! She also has fresh flowers, huge vases with a few tall stems all year round.

i do sometimes find myself thinking would she have this in her house if I’m buying something, 😂

I also remember years ago, going into a parents house of one of my child’s friends, and literally standing there gaping. It was like my mind and body froze. I’d literally never seen anything as nice.

I’m disappointed — I thought the title indicated a very different type of post, more like ‘I went to a stranger’s house last night… NAKED UNDER MY TRENCHCOAT’ or ‘… AND REARRANGED ALL THEIR PICTURES BEFORE EXITING THROUGH THE WINDOW’.

Minimalism and Nemo diffusers aren’t really cutting it.

exactly my thoughts. I thought it would be some sort of ONS fail/weirdness thread. disappointed

Iheartmysmart · 09/02/2024 11:38

It sounds a bit dull and bland to me. My flat is clean and tidy but my furniture is random reclaimed stuff I liked, the sofa is old and covered with a throw my nan crocheted for me. Pictures are ones that have been accumulated from various places over the years. My bathroom and kitchen need replacing but they are usable and homely. I do have a Neom diffuser though!

Morecatsarebetter · 09/02/2024 11:39

It’s the people you love who make a home, not a Neom diffuser. If you have the former you’re a millionaire x

RicePuddingWithCinnamon · 09/02/2024 11:40

Get a cheap diffuser from amazon. Anything expensive has a very good cheap version available.

Jealousy only hurts you.

The wrong trainers thing is totally possible. I once had two pairs of boots, both ankle length. Totally different shades of brown. Impossible to mix up. Felt different. And yet I managed in a ditzy moment to go out shopping wearing one of each pair. It took waaayyy too long for me to realise Hmm so I couldn't go back home and change. Just had to get on and shop and hope no one noticed Grin

Easily done

I've gone to work in odd shoes before

I was going to a funeral of my great aunt and was going to have to stay over a few days as it was a few hundred miles from where I live. Packed my funeral attire including small black booties. Getting ready I realised I'd brought an odd pair! Had to wear black trainers and felt very disrespectful though knowing my great aunt she'd have laughed.

I was rushing to visit my brother in hospital and when I arrived the doctor asked if I'd just come from work. I thought it a bit strange as I'd had a wash, changed my clothes etc and then realised I'd put on my safety shoes instead of my trainers!

Oh stop being so shallow and materialistic! It’s an ugly trait! You don’t know what problems she suffers- she might be crippled with anxiety behind closed doors. Stop trying to “keep up with the Jones” and comparing yourself over things that don’t matter.

Cackling at this

Garlickit · 09/02/2024 12:01

Not the point, but for those who hanker after overpriced diffusers: Spend the £45 on essential oils and some diffuser reeds. Bonus: for this budget, you can get the real thing instead of 'fragrance'. Dissolve a few drops in some vodka. Once you've made your ideal scent, add water and stick the mixture in your diffusers. You'll have enough oils for a couple of years.

Most currently fashionable room scents feature vetiver. Get a bottle of that and a couple of whatever else you fancy.

Featured Scent: What Does Vetiver Smell Like?

The smell of vetiver is pleasantly dry, earthy, and woody. Some describe the smell of vetiver as similar to a grassy lawn, and it adds warm, grounded qualities to the beautiful fragrances that feature vetiver.
