Have you ever been greatly saddened by the passing of a celebrity/well known person?

As sad as it is with anyone passing away I can’t recall many celebrity deaths ever having any lasting impact on me, except for two.

For me, it was the death of Terry Wogan.

I suppose it was mainly because I grew up with him as a constant in the background, mum always had him playing and when I became an adult I automatically carried that on. He had me in stitches and he had the most perfect voice and personality for radio.

I bawled my eyes out when he passed away and I still miss his shows.

As I say, I really don’t get sentimental over such things but the passing of Terry Wogan and my first love, George Michael really did hit me hard when they went.

Alan Rickman. He is my all time favorite actor and I was so sad when he passed away.

Not read full thread. Kirsty MacColl - Still makes me cry when I think about it, and about her children. And the campaign after her death. So so sad. What an amazing woman, and a selfless mother. Not to mention a very talented and inspirational singer / songwriter.

George Michael, Kurt Cobain and David Bowie. Loved them all. George was especially hard to take as he was so young (as was Kurt but it was his decision to end it). I still remember finding out that Christmas and how upset we all were.

Mindlesspuzzles · 09/02/2024 11:22

Like a pp said, when they've gone before their time in the sense that they would have had a lot left to give.
Victoria Wood definitely. I read her biog and she had lots of ideas for future projects .

Helen Mccrory- too young.

I was very sad about Paul Ritter because he was on the up, people were just realising how good an actor he was.

Caron Keating. I think this made an impression on me because I had grown up watching her on Blue Peter and thought she was lovely and looked up to her.

Quite few, over the years:
Princess Diana
Kurt Cobain
Michael Hutchence
Maya Angelou
Terry Pratchett
Alan Rickman
Mark Lanegan
Sinead O'Connor
Benjamin Zephaniah

Matthew Perry 💔💔

Terry Pratchetts death made me feel profoundly sad. In my opinion he was one of the greatest authors of all time. I’d been reading his books since I was 10, I grew up with them and the magic he wove on the pages got me through some extremely tough times in my teenage and adult years. And every time I can’t find something new to read it makes me feel a bit sadder knowing he’ll never release another book.

REP22 · 09/02/2024 11:54

Alan Rickman.

VincentVanGoth · 09/02/2024 12:05

Jade goodys death affected me quite badly - we were the same age and my children were the same age as hers too.

and oddly, Bernard Cribbins.

Prelapsarianhag · 09/02/2024 12:11

Kirsty MacColl
Peaches Geldoff
Bert Jansch

An Instagram influencer with stage 4 cancer, followed her journey since diagnoses and when o saw the post that she had passed away I was so upset

spiderlight · 09/02/2024 12:35

Robin Williams, Paul Ritter, Paul O'Grady and Sean Lock were the ones who really upset me. When DH came into the room to tell me David Bowie had died, he looked so ashen that I thought something had happened to one of his parents.

Jasmin1971 · 09/02/2024 12:44

Bowie, I actually cried 😭

C1N1C · 09/02/2024 12:47

Stan Lee... it's been a sh!t-show since then.

onwardsup4 · 09/02/2024 12:49

Caroline flack's passing really upset me actually

Elphame · 09/02/2024 12:53

Not really no.

I was sorry to hear Alan Rickman had died and David Bowie but I'd forgotten about it a few minutes later. The knowledge we think we have of famous people is carefully curated to give the impression that they or the media want us to have.

None of it is real.

maddiemookins16mum · 09/02/2024 12:56

I still can’t quite believe we’ll never see or hear Paul O Grady again.

norasand · 09/02/2024 12:58

George Michael. Still the main soundtrack to my life. His music has meant so much to me and it's so sad that he was so young. I still miss knowing he's around and mourn the fact there will never be new music from him.

Freddie Mercury. He was the first to die of the people I listened to, so quite a schock and a reminder of the fragility of life. With the AIDS epidemic and everything going on regarding that it felt so bleak.

Lurkingandlearning · 09/02/2024 12:59

I’ve cried. Not bawled but had I already been feeling low when I read the news bawling may well have happened.

If I think about it, it is weird that we have these emotional responses to people we’ve never met but on the other hand they’ve “been in our homes” part of our home life more than many of the people we actually know fairly well

usernother · 09/02/2024 13:06

Jasmin1971 · 09/02/2024 12:44

Bowie, I actually cried 😭

Me too. I think it was because I didn't know he was ill and i didn't expect him to die. Which is daft I know.

Lizzieregina · 09/02/2024 13:07

Arthur Ashe and Princess Diana.

Theoldcuriosityshop · 09/02/2024 13:07

I'm old so mine was Elvis. Teenagers had no music of their own until he arrived. He changed our teenage world in lots of ways.

sprigatito · 09/02/2024 13:08

Hilary Mantel and Alan Rickman

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 09/02/2024 13:09

Eric Morecambe. He was so like my own father and I sobbed and sobbed.
Saddened greatly by the death of Matty Perry. He was why I joined Twitter (tho I left when EM took it over). I found him warm and funny, and desperately sad. His autobiography is amazing.
Still sad about it now.
