Have you ever been greatly saddened by the passing of a celebrity/well known person?

As sad as it is with anyone passing away I can’t recall many celebrity deaths ever having any lasting impact on me, except for two.

For me, it was the death of Terry Wogan.

I suppose it was mainly because I grew up with him as a constant in the background, mum always had him playing and when I became an adult I automatically carried that on. He had me in stitches and he had the most perfect voice and personality for radio.

I bawled my eyes out when he passed away and I still miss his shows.

As I say, I really don’t get sentimental over such things but the passing of Terry Wogan and my first love, George Michael really did hit me hard when they went.

Archie Lyndhurst

As a teen River Phoenix.

More recently Sarah Harding as she was so young and my sister was going through the same.

I haven’t felt devastated or actually cried over the death of a famous person, but I still feel sad when I remember that Rik Mayall and Sean Lock are both dead.

Prince 😞What an awful year 2016 was 😞

Goldenbrowntexturelikesun · 09/02/2024 08:16

Komencanto I often think about him and his poor parents, his death was so very tragic.

Sarah Harding.

George Michael and Robin Williams.

I felt very sad when Princess Diana died. I worked in TV then so we were all called into work and spent the next few days completely redoing the programmes for the week ahead. When I went home that night I decided to go down to Kensington Palace. I'm quite ambivalent about the Royals usually but I felt like I wanted to pay respect to the fact two little boys had lost their mum. All the money in the world can't protect you from that kind of heartache.

Noshowlomo · 09/02/2024 08:21

Heath Ledger. Still sad now

DillDanding · 09/02/2024 08:22

Bawling your eyes out? Seems a tad de trop.

I thought, ‘oh shame’, when Terry Wogan died. But that’s about as sad as I’d likely get.

That’s interesting — what did you have to do to the programmes? Were you in current affairs?

Forevermermaid · 09/02/2024 08:24

Alan Rickman. Such a big fan of his work and that gorgeous voice.

AmaryllisChorus · 09/02/2024 08:27

I was very sad about Kirsty MacColl. I grew up with her music, love her voice and I'd seen her in concert not long before. But the sadness was because her death was so tragic and unnecessary, and she left behind two sons, one of whose life she saved from the same accident. It's just heartbreaking.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 09/02/2024 08:31

I was genuinely saddened to hear about Alan Rickman and Robin Williams.

Kazzyhoward · 09/02/2024 08:31

Olivia Newton John.

Not only a very talented singer, actress and dancer, but also a genuine and humble person who did a lot for good causes, such as founding her cancer wellness centre, helping to protect dolphins (and animals/nature generally) and generally being a nice, caring person who never let fame and fortune ruin her.

She's literally the only "sleb" I've cried over when the news broke of her passing, even though it was expected after her third battle with cancer.

No one has ever had a bad thing to say about her, and in showbiz circles, that says something!

SirChenjins · 09/02/2024 08:33

Terry Wogan (feeling it again after Zoe Ball's 7.33 slot this morning) and Victoria Wood because they were such a big part of my childhood and teenage years and remind me so much of my mum, and Christine McVie - she was so talented and one of my favourite singer/songwriters.

SpraggleWaggle · 09/02/2024 08:34

George Michael. He was such a lovely man.

vocalfryspeppermintcream · 09/02/2024 08:35

Terry Wogan for me was the one that my reaction surprised me the most - beforehand I felt I only had a passing interest but I felt so sad when he died, I realised how much he'd just always been there in my life, on radio and television.

ebts · 09/02/2024 08:35

John Lennon
Amy Winehouse
George Michael

Lindy2 · 09/02/2024 08:36

I think it's the ones that had so much more they could have given with their talents, but were taken too soon.

  • Victoria Wood
  • Rik Mayell
  • River Phoenix
  • Alan Rickman
  • George Michael

Just to name a few.

TheFormidableMrsC · 09/02/2024 08:37

There are some deaths that hit harder than others. One that really upset me at the time was the Argentinian footballer, Emiliano Sala who died in a plane crash over the channel on his way to start his Premiership career at Cardiff. It was just so tragic and avoidable. A young life lost because people were focussed on money and not safety.

fancyfrogs · 09/02/2024 08:38

I cried when Tom Parker, the guy from The Wanted died a couple of years ago of a brain tumour. He was the same age as my DH and my kids were the same age as his. It made me so incredibly sad relating it to my own family and that his children were likely too young for to remember much of him alive at all.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 09/02/2024 08:42

Bernard Cribbins. He was like the last bastion of my childhood.

(Especially sad as he'd only just been given permission to read his autobiography himself for the audio book which would have been an absolute joy.)

MissRheingold · 09/02/2024 08:42

Red Rum.

The inscription on his gravestone
"Respect this place
This hallowed ground
A legend here
His rest has found
His feet would fly
Our spirits soar
He earned our love
For evermore"

GreatOak · 09/02/2024 08:43

Not a celeb in the usual sense - folk musician Paul Sartin. Such a shock. He was so, so talented and had the most wonderful voice. Listening to him sing "Brisk Lad" always brings a lump to my throat.
