Have you ever been greatly saddened by the passing of a celebrity/well known person?

As sad as it is with anyone passing away I can’t recall many celebrity deaths ever having any lasting impact on me, except for two.

For me, it was the death of Terry Wogan.

I suppose it was mainly because I grew up with him as a constant in the background, mum always had him playing and when I became an adult I automatically carried that on. He had me in stitches and he had the most perfect voice and personality for radio.

I bawled my eyes out when he passed away and I still miss his shows.

As I say, I really don’t get sentimental over such things but the passing of Terry Wogan and my first love, George Michael really did hit me hard when they went.

I might have been shocked, especially if it was a too-early death, like Victoria Wood for example. And I might have been sad generally. But no, I've never bawled my eyes out because someone I don't know has died.

Hilary Mantel, because we’d never have another novel from her.

Hoglet70 · 09/02/2024 08:04

I was really upset when George Michael passed as he was the soundtrack to most of my life really. Generally when celebs die I just think, oh how sad and move on as it doesn't affect my life but I was really upset when he died.
Weirdly, I remember the announcement on Radio 4 that Freddie Mercury had died like it was yesterday but I don't remember being upset, just that it felt surreal.

BlindurErBóklausMaður · 09/02/2024 08:04

People like Terry Wogan and Victoria Wood because I grew up with them, and I guess their deaths reminded me a lot of my mum, who would have been sad to hear about the deaths, so it's all tied up to our own backgrounds I think. Terry had breakfast with me and my mum every day for decades after all.

The people on here though (and there are lots!) who are still rending their garments and not sleeping and "can't stop thinking about George Michael/Amy Winehouse/Michael Jackson etc" need help. Nobody should be that affected by the death of someone they never knew.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 09/02/2024 08:04

Robin Williams and Matthew Perry.

@Hoglet70 cross post! I didn't mean you!

@BIWI
I'm your "old" friend btw.
Not online dating obvs. 😏

shreknjumps · 09/02/2024 08:06

@BlindurErBóklausMaður it's not top trumps ffs. George Michael spent many many more times with me and my mum that Terry Wogan did.

Guess what? People are different.

I will never forget Princess Diana dying I ws 19 at the time. I went out on the Sunday evening into our City to meet friends, it was like the whole country went into mourning there was a very sombre air for many weeks. I don't think I felt that when the Queen died.

Squirrelsnut · 09/02/2024 08:07

Very saddened by Victoria Wood.
Saddened by Rik Mayall, Paul Ritter and Andre Braugher.

BrieAndChilli · 09/02/2024 08:08

I’m not normally emotional when a celebrity died, just a oh that’s sad or what a shock and I hate the wastage of the mountain of flowers people dump on a street somewhere but I was upset when Chadwick Boseman died. Don’t know why but everything I read and watched about him just made me think that world was a much darker place now he was not in it.

I was also sad when the queen died just because it was someone who was very much ingrained into our society and the first monarch who had died in most peoples living memory. I’m not even a royalist really.

JT69 · 09/02/2024 08:08

Taylor Hawkins. Such a great guy and musician . Forever now just another rockstar that overdosed in a hotel room.

DisforDarkChocolate · 09/02/2024 08:08

Victoria Wood. Massively talented and a trailblazer for women comedians.

George Michael, such a kind man with a voice that could make you cry. I never realised how much of his music had been part of my life until he died.

newtb · 09/02/2024 08:09

Was sad when Jacques Chirac died, he seemed to have been around for ever.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 09/02/2024 08:09

Heath Ledger and Meat Loaf.

And that's what I said.

Unless you are one of the people starting threads about how your life is over because his is. Didn't you see any of them?

Because that type of reaction is so far from normal it needs help.

Prizefighter · 09/02/2024 08:11

I still feel weird about Amy Winehouse

BrendasIronSledge · 09/02/2024 08:11

Rik Mayall and Adam Yauch.

Floopyfloop · 09/02/2024 08:11

Vivienne westwood
Rik mayall
Victoria Wood
Princess Diana and the Queen

FionnulaTheCooler · 09/02/2024 08:12

I was sad when I heard the news that David Bowie had died. He was my first crush as the goblin king in Labyrinth. I was also sad when Meat Loaf died but that was less of a shock as it was well known that he had been suffering with ill health in the years before he died.

GoldenEagles · 09/02/2024 08:12

No.

IDoLikeToBeByTheSea · 09/02/2024 08:12

Chester Bennington. Not to the extent of shedding a tear etc but it was very sad. Very talented musician.

Alicewinn · 09/02/2024 08:13

Freddie Mercury

Funkyslippers · 09/02/2024 08:14

Michael Hutchence. I thought he was some sort of god and such an amazing front man. I didn't want the way he died to overshadow him as a person

Also very sad about Princess Diana. Anyone who goes long before their time, really, as they still had so much life to live

TM1979 · 09/02/2024 08:14

Rik Mayall as my brother and I were huge fans of Bottom and used to bunk off school and watch it all day. I was devastated when he died, he was such a fun part of my teens.
Also Gay Byrne, as here in Ireland he was the radio voice we all grew up with. I really liked him. His voice always reminds me of my granny’s house.
