Have you ever been greatly saddened by the passing of a celebrity/well known person?

As sad as it is with anyone passing away I can’t recall many celebrity deaths ever having any lasting impact on me, except for two.

For me, it was the death of Terry Wogan.

I suppose it was mainly because I grew up with him as a constant in the background, mum always had him playing and when I became an adult I automatically carried that on. He had me in stitches and he had the most perfect voice and personality for radio.

I bawled my eyes out when he passed away and I still miss his shows.

As I say, I really don’t get sentimental over such things but the passing of Terry Wogan and my first love, George Michael really did hit me hard when they went.

Paul O'Grady. Not in the bawling my eyes out sense, but I was very saddened by his sudden death.

I did shed tears when Eric Morecambe died. I was only about 11 and hadn't lost anyone in real life except a grandfather when I was 2 so I was a bit shocked at the idea of someone dying suddenly. I'd seen him so often and he made me smile and laugh so much, also he looked a bit like my dad.

Otherwise I do feel sadness, but I don't think I've cried.

I was upset when Chadwick Boseman died. Don’t know why but everything I read and watched about him just made me think that world was a much darker place now he was not in it.

Yep another one here for Chadwick. One thing that made me sad about his death was he had been looking very gaunt before he died and some gossip blogs and social media had ridiculed him not knowing what he was going through.

The fact he knew his life was coming to an end soon but kept on going as much as he could and achieved great things really touched me. Overall he just struck me as a man of good character as well as being a talented actor who strived to make a positive impact in his life.

Also Whitney Houston - I think I was OK until I saw her funeral and people standing up to sing or talk about how she has touched their life.

And Lisa “left eye” Lopez from TLC she was so young when she died. I think she was filming a documentary in Honduras and was in a car accident. It just seemed so unnecessary and I absolutely loved Tlc growing up.

I mean it’s a shame when anybody dies really but a celeb dying has no more impact on me than a random off the street. Sorry I know I’m cold hearted!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/02/2024 08:52

Ditto to Victoria Wood, she was too young.
Other than that, only usually a passing regret for a few.

Exception was the Queen - I’m fairly ancient so she’d been a fixture ever since I could remember. Truly the end of an era.

Talking of which, a GM of mine could remember Queen Victoria dying when she was 6. The church bells were tolling and her father said in a very sombre voice, ‘The Queen is dead!’ - and my GM thought the world must be coming to an end if the Queen was dead!

Chester Bennington shocked me, I felt really sad when his last photo was released. He looked so happy and carefree. You'd have never known he was going to do what he did looking at that photo.

Elspyth · 09/02/2024 08:58

The only "celeb" i have cried over was the Queen, random as I'm not a royal fan. It was just such a huge moment.

George Michael I'm often sad about, he seemed lovely but was obviously unhappy, poor man. I listen to his music a lot.

DMCWelshcakes · 09/02/2024 09:03

I cried a bit when Terry Wogan, Victoria Wood and Taylor Hawkins died. I had stuff going on in my life at the time and it was a trigger to release some of that.

I was extremely sad when Robin Williams died, as it was such a shock. Ditto Matthew Perry. Can't recall crying.

I cried watching Princess Diana's funeral when I saw the boys walking along and the card that said "mummy". That wasn't so much for her death as the small boys left behind.

I'd say that after decades of therapy I'm fairly well adjusted and I think it is normal to have a good cry every now and then, no matter what sets it off.

SoRainbowRhythms · 09/02/2024 09:05

Terry Hall. What a guy.

ladymalfoy45 · 09/02/2024 09:06

Hoping Tom Baker will last a while longer. And Sir David Attenborough.

QuacketyQuack · 09/02/2024 09:07

Aaliyah- died waaaay to young.
Princess Di
George Michael
Prince

I’m going to be a complete mess when David Hockney goes. All that talent and a thoroughly nice, decent man as well. The world will be poorer for his loss. The retrospective exhibition will be amazing though.

NashvilleQueen · 09/02/2024 09:13

Shane MacGowan
Sinead O'Connor
Caroline Aherne
Victoria Wood

Shane did manage to have the most brilliant funeral though so some silver linings.

HowDoTheyGetThroughLife · 09/02/2024 09:15

When some well-known people have died, I've thought "What a shame", like Paul O'Grady and Johnny Irwin. I've never, and would never "bawl my eyes out" over the death of a celebrity.

MeandBobbyMcGoo · 09/02/2024 09:17

I was very saddened when Terry Pratchett passed away. I had this overwhelming sense that the world is a much poorer place and he left us behind.

Sususudio · 09/02/2024 09:19

Naya Rivera, because it was such a horrible way to go. It's not that I was such a big Glee fan, though I thought she was talented, but the way she died....

transformandriseup · 09/02/2024 09:21

Mark Speight - I loved Smart in the 90's and I had met him too.

Also Chester Bennington.

Merrow · 09/02/2024 09:21

I was sad about Terry Pratchett, although I guess the sadness came a bit earlier with his diagnosis. But the idea that there would be no more discworld books did feel like my world had been subtly altered.

Helen McCrory I really felt as a loss. I used to travel to London to see any theatre production she was in as she was such an amazing actress. And it also seemed like a genuinely great person.

WinterLobelia · 09/02/2024 09:23

I was really sad when River Phoenix died. I was a bit of a film obsessive when young and had loved My Own Private Idaho. I recently re-watched Running on Empty and Little Nikita and just felt so sad for such a lost talent.

MrsWhattery · 09/02/2024 09:24

Definitely Victoria Wood, just so wrong and awful as she was just getting better and better and would have been such a fantastic older woman still being brilliant and unique into old age. And because of the way she talked about things it felt like you could imagine how she’d feel about it.

And I’m still upset about Freddie Mercury! I just want him to still be here doing his thing. Like VW it’s the uniqueness. A brilliant one-off of a person taken away when they could have gone on doing so much.

I always feel sad when it’s someone young too, or a death caused by drugs - whether accidental or not - people like Philip Seymour Hoffman, Prince, Heath Ledger - just so sad.

Red Rum.

The inscription on his gravestone
"Respect this place
This hallowed ground
A legend here
His rest has found
His feet would fly
Our spirits soar
He earned our love
For evermore"

I sobbed my eye out at that. 🥲

Whu · 09/02/2024 09:25

Stephen Gately upset me a lot as a youngster - so young and I loved Boyzone at the time!

As an adult, Chester Bennington really got to me as I loved his music through most of my life and he seemed such a tormented but lovely soul. I hope he found peace.

Also, Paul O’Grady I had met him a few times and he was a genuinely lovely and warm as he seemed on tv. He did so much good for the dogs too.
