Can people tell you have had a glass of wine?

It’s easy to spot when lots of my friends have had a glass of wine. I can be quite drunk and people have no idea. Unless you saw me drinking of course.

It’s not that I don’t get or feel tipsy, I’m just good at hiding it.

Why are you needing to hide it?

How much are you drinking?

Most people who think others can't spot when they have been drinking are mistaken.

Totally agree.

malpo · 08/02/2024 09:02

Usually I would agree with the above, but it’s something people always say. “I didn’t know you were drunk” “I couldn’t tell at all you’d had three glasses of wine”.

Not even a big drinker!

One glass, no. Three, yes.

How often are people saying this?

MidnightSerenader · 08/02/2024 09:05

One glass of wine? Who can tell anyone’s had one glass of wine…?

You’re hardly slurring your words and/or swinging from the rafters after one glass of wine……

awitchoftroubleinelectricblue · 08/02/2024 09:06

Depends on how big the glass is 😂 Generally, no, they can't. A couple more though and they would notice me feeling tipsy.

MissusKay · 08/02/2024 09:06

Only because I turn bright red and break out in hives - otherwise, who would know? 😉😂

SongWriter · 08/02/2024 09:07

Not sure about after one glass in terms of behaviour, but anyone that knows me, knows that thanks to being peri menopausal, my face goes red after only a very small amount of alcohol now, so that’s a giveaway. Thanks hormones! 😂 I don’t drink now because of it.

MermaidEyes · 08/02/2024 09:07

I'm not good with wine so one glass and I'm probably flushed and tipsy. Give me several vodkas on the other hand, and you'd never know....

OhItsOnlyCynthia · 08/02/2024 09:08

I think so. I'm not a big drinker and I feel different after one glass. Certainly nothing like drunk, not even tipsy, just a bit more relaxed.

Whitesapphire · 08/02/2024 09:08

No, it takes a lot more than one glass to get me tipsy unfortunately

SongWriter · 08/02/2024 09:09

@MissusKay Has that always happened? I was fine before peri menopause, now the redness and heat in my face is awful.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 08/02/2024 09:10

Wine, yes because it goes straight to my head but I don’t drink it. I’m the opposite TBH, I’m quite a hyper person especially when there’s music involved and I’ll happily dance the night away on a couple of diet cokes and no one knows I’m not actually drinking (my group of friends are big drinkers and would definitely comment/ encourage me if they knew I wasn’t drinking). I’m just not that interested in drinking and I CBA paying pub prices these days!

theduchessofspork · 08/02/2024 09:11

Not one glass no

MermaidEyes · 08/02/2024 09:12

@SongWriter yes I get red and flushed too, didn't realise it was my age but I guess it makes sense. I don't feel it but if anyone takes photos and I look back I'm like a tomato 🍅 in them 🙄

MiddleParking · 08/02/2024 09:16

I’m definitely usually noticeably tipsy, red in the face and yes, slurring my words slightly after one drink of anything. And I’d get an unpleasant hangover from it. I definitely couldn’t drive after a glass of wine in the way some people are happy to.

SongWriter · 08/02/2024 09:18

@MermaidEyes A tomato is about right. A very ripe one. 🤣

I also get it if I drink coffee or eat fatty foods now. GP says it’s common in peri menopause. Lucky us, eh? At least I’m healthier I suppose! Every cloud and all that.

Oh god I hope I don't end up getting it with coffee too! Thinking I need some better make up to cover it - maybe the white lead paint popular in Elizabethan times would work 😆

That usually means it's your 'normal' state.

You say you are not a big drinker, but didn't say how often you drink or how much you drink

Pickles2023 · 08/02/2024 09:48

Oh yes..i don't drink full stop..mainly because i don't even finish one glass and i am slurring, flushed. A whole glass and two days i will feel rough and have this insane anxiety 😂 no idea why it hits me so much. It got to a point where i just couldn't swallow it, proper aversion. Can't tell if its psychosomatic due to the awful reaction that now my body is like uhmmm nope.

Its embaressing..quite frankly i wouldn't subject anyone to me after a glass 🤣

TheYearOfSmallThings · 08/02/2024 09:49

Same.

Hoglet70 · 08/02/2024 10:10

If it's a large glass I definitely feel tipsy after one. My DH could drink the bottle and you wouldn't know.

mindutopia · 08/02/2024 10:17

I bet they can actually, if they aren't drinking. I am a former heavy drinker. And it's now very obvious to me when people are drinking and I am sober. Even one drink does change how people act and react. I never would have believed it when I was drinking (and also thought I hid my drinking very well!). I was sure no one knew. I imagine if they were also drinking they didn't notice, but now it's very obvious to me. It's subtle shifts in demeanour, attitude, tension, even how quickly people are to react. My dh still drinks (in a relatively normal way, not how I used to) and even though he is normally the most patient, chilled person, even one drink and he is noticeably shorter with the kids and everyone else. I never noticed it before, but it's quite obvious now. I think we do tend to tell ourselves these things though to reassure ourselves about our drinking. I know I definitely did.
