What do you search for when you have a nose on Rightmove?

I usually look for properties 4bed min, with garden and off road parking, where I live/where I used to live/where we like to go on holiday. I pretend that I'm genuinely looking for a suitable place.

Then I critique/rearrange/extend/plan - daydream, basically!

What do you look for?

I search the postcodes of everywhere I've lived to see if any of my old houses come up for sale.

Also houses of people I know just to be nosey.

Houses that we looked at when we were looking that were projects, just to see what they look like now and how much they are compared to the original price.

Remoteness

MissyB1 · 06/02/2024 17:29

I look for the type of house we will probably downsize to in about 4 years. A 3 bed with downstairs shower room and hopefully south facing garden.

IncompleteSenten · 06/02/2024 17:30

Completely unrealistic houses. Detached, large garden, remote, ideally a pool.

Holly2285 · 06/02/2024 17:30

I look at all my old houses/roads to see if any up for sale

Ridiculously expensive houses local 1million+

Then I look at what I could afford and think christ I better stick with what I've got.

I do always have to check floorplans and check is flows right

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 06/02/2024 17:32

I moved nearly two years ago now but still obsessed with looking at houses in the same area as if I'm still looking to move. Mainly because I'm nosey and also to see if there's anything 'better' that we should have held out for and if we got value for money. So far, still happy with our purchase!

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 06/02/2024 17:33

For my old houses; for the most expensive houses near me [a girl can dream]; or the clear "project houses" near me for some fantasy renovations and there's a website for architect designed houses https://www.themodernhouse.com/collections/modern-classics/ that I occasionally peruse but very rarely see anything I like that much

Architectural Masterpieces for sale across the UK. From Art Deco to Midcentury Modern, the finest examples of their era.

Houses with my postcode
Houseswith DM postcode.
Most expensive houses within 10 miles. There's lots of them in Bristol and Bath.

Moonflower12 · 06/02/2024 17:44

I set strange scenarios, such as my DH has 'gone' and I want to buy a period property with a budget of £250k to do up. This would be so I was mortgage free. This is the amount his life assurance would pay out.

I also look for houses if we'd won the lottery. Always near to my grown up DC and DGC for both scenarios.

LlynTegid · 06/02/2024 17:51

How much mine might be worth!

MissRheingold · 06/02/2024 17:55

I like looking at converted barns and the looking them up before they were done up. Some were almost rubble and it's fascinating seeing that someone had the vision the see a heap of falling down stone and so it to make a beautiful home.

BachB · 06/02/2024 17:58

The perfect bungalow - doesn't have to be one storey, but at least two ensuite bathrooms downstairs. Highly unlikely to be on the market for less than £1.5M given my specs but I don't let budget be a constraint (fantasy searching). Been looking for ages and still haven't the one...

GenerousGardener · 06/02/2024 18:04

Bungalows where I live
Any property in Fowey
Any property in north Devon.
Any property in old villages where I used live.

muddyford · 06/02/2024 18:16

Bungalows in the area I want to move to. Then gut them, knock walls down and change the garden.

EffieeBriest · 06/02/2024 18:23

Houses in London like Pimlico and Bloomsbury, Hampstead and marvel at how expensive they are. Not the mega mega million pound ones but the ordinary terraces and semis. Plus big Victorian detached properties with loads of character. It’s nice looking at how they are decorated when you’ve got money.
I have noticed that being very rich does not necessarily mean good taste 😂and many a gorgeous period property is spoiled by needless ostentatious bling….

Felicia19 · 06/02/2024 18:23

I look for properties in my area that are laughably out of my budget.
I would want 4 bedrooms, with a separate annexe for visitors. A massive garden with an orchard, greenhouses and all the staff needed to look after it all.

DatingDinosaur · 06/02/2024 18:26

Bungalow. Detached. Garage/off street parking. Minimum 2 bedrooms. Village or outskirts of town location. As far away from schools as possible. Shops within walking distance. Don't mind 'in need of modernisation' so long as its structurally sound. Cul de sac. North-east facing. Under £200k.

Yeah, still looking Grin

3smallpups · 06/02/2024 18:38

I look at little family houses in two nearby towns that I'd love my son and his family to move from south London to .
Of course they don't know about this and I never send them links etc, just find them the perfect house secretly!

79andnotout · 06/02/2024 18:43

I search for anything within five miles with ‘acre’ in the listing. I’d love a massive garden.

Fishersprice · 06/02/2024 18:46

I prefer something 200-300k over my own budget, just in case I happen to find that down the back of the sofa.

MamaAlwaysknowsbest · 06/02/2024 18:48

My one will be fun. I am looking for small properties, imagining I have just enough money to buy one and make a good life there with a small family :)

MamaAlwaysknowsbest · 06/02/2024 18:49

I have all the space I need right now but kind of like cozy , cottages , yay

needtoshrink · 06/02/2024 18:50

The house next door to my old one to see if it's sold yet after being listed at what I see as a vastly inflated price! If it has I seriously undersold mine!

CherryBlossom321 · 06/02/2024 18:50

Next county over; remote villages, minimum 3 bed, 2 bath. Will be a slight downsize but much lovelier area and could become a reality in the next few years, if we make good financial choices.

Jasmin1971 · 06/02/2024 17:28

Remoteness

Me too. I do a lot of browsing of islands on the Outer Hebrides wondering if I could tolerate the weather. I could tolerate the remoteness but I'm not keen on rain.

I am currently eyeing up somewhere on the Isle of Rum. (Population 22 apparently) It is still too close to other properties. 😁
