When will the parents of the children killed in the Wimbledon crash get an answer?

Sorry for the daily fail link. This story really resonated with me at the time as I used to work at St Georges and lived close to Wimbledon. It's been ages and those poor parents still have no answers.

What do you think happened? Before people say it's horrible to speculate and none of my business- I know but my kids are similar age and I feel heartbroken for them and you'd be desperate for some kind of closure.

Heartbreaking footage shows Wimbledon crash victim Selena Lau, eight, playing the piano at an end-of-term tea party before Land Rover smashed into grounds of school killing her and another classmate | Daily Mail Online

Wimbledon crash victim, 8, played piano moments before fatal incident

Selena Lau, who was a pupil at The Study Prep school in Wimbledon, was performing at a concert before the £80,000 Land Rover crashed through the primary school's gates.

Just awful isn't it. I can't imagine how those poor parents are coping.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/02/2024 16:27

You'll find out when it reaches court. Until then, just leave it.

Cazpar · 05/02/2024 16:35

I think what you mean is "when am I going to get to read the gory details in the paper?"

Getonnow · 05/02/2024 16:35

Won't there be some sort of family liason going on, so the parents do have an idea of where the investigation is at?

GotMooMilk · 05/02/2024 19:33

@Getonnow well from the interview it seems they’re completely in the dark.
@Cazpar I’m a nurse and worked in A&E. I absolutely do not want gory details- I can’t even imagine those poor children having looked after children in RTAs and traumatic events. I just feel justice should be served for those grieving families.

It's literally none of your business.

This is the worst of human nature. What are you going to do if the family are told the details and don't wish to discuss or share with anyone?

Justice can be served without you knowing the details.

GreyCarpet · 05/02/2024 19:39

I, for one, hope that in the event of some tragedy befalling my family, there won't be any complete strangers starting threads about it on MN.

GotMooMilk · 05/02/2024 19:40

@GreyCarpet well obviously find where they live, bang on the door and demand to know the details and see the report.

Theyve literally been in the paper (is DM considered a paper!) saying they’re struggling with their loss and the complete lack of closure. I’m not worrying about it for hours daily but this prompted me to think how sad it is. And likely related to the fact that a £££ person in that car with lots of money and power could keep it quiet. It’s unusual.

It's a conspiracy?

FFS. you're a vulture, no different from the shitbags who fell over themselves to describe my brother's brain being smeared hundreds of yards down the road when he was killed on Facebook. Before the family had been contacted. And it wasn't true, anyway. Bet they're pissed off that there wasn't some juicy titbits in the paper afterwards.

Oh, don’t be so silly.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 05/02/2024 20:16

Why? Why do you want to know? What good will it do you?

mondaytosunday · 05/02/2024 20:24

My friend had a car drive through her fence, through her child's swing set and finally stopped close to the back door. The driver had had a heart attack. No children were outside but there could easily have been several. I think knowing that it was a medical incident, rather than, say, drunk driving, would help the families in question. If it was the latter, then the driver could be prosecuted accordingly. Whether the general public needs to know is debatable, but you could say that about a lot of stories that get reported. We often hear complaints about X and Y incidents not being reported on, with race or demographic cited as why, obviously not the case here.

LadyWithLapdog · 05/02/2024 20:27

I’m with you, OP, though not brave enough to start a thread on here. I don’t understand why it’s taking so long. It’s looking like that diplomat or spy in Oxfordshire evading justice.

Are you referring to Anne Sacoolas? Interesting that her name was leaked to the press within hours and yet months later, we still don't know the identity of the Wimbledon driver.

LadyWithLapdog · 05/02/2024 20:46

Yes. Re this case there was going to be something in October, then it was delayed for January. I haven’t looked for updates. I’ll have a read of the link.

LlynTegid · 05/02/2024 20:48

The family are not the only ones bereaved waiting for justice so that some form of closure occurs. Just hope they don't have to wait much longer.

HRTQueen · 05/02/2024 20:53

Both families of the victims have been interviewed by BBC asking for answers

I am willing to bet the driver has a very expensive lawyer who is working through every way possible for his client to delay the case meanwhile the families have to suffer further

LadyWithLapdog · 05/02/2024 20:56

That article is heartbreaking. Those poor families and those poor little girls.

CauliflowerChocolat · 05/02/2024 20:58

The family held an interview with The Times over the weekend. They are desperate for answers, and I don't blame them.

soupfiend · 05/02/2024 21:02

Im surprised people are surprised that court cases can take a long time. Recently I was informed of a court case for some children I had been working with at the time (they're now adults), it had taken 4 years to get to court.

NashvilleQueen · 05/02/2024 21:05

It is quite usual for police investigations into fatal road collisions to take a long time. There are expert reports about the cause of the crash and, I imagine here, potential health reports relating to the driver to be considered before a decision in charge is reached.

LadyWithLapdog · 05/02/2024 21:05

They’d specifically said October, then January. There’s only 1 person innvolved, 1 day. Surely, it’s not THAT complex. The Justice process , like everything else, is becoming a shitshow.

soupfiend · 05/02/2024 21:05

Just a quick search shows she has been rebailed a number of times, this is common and the incident happened in July, that is recently in terms of court timescales at the moment.

Ifailed · 05/02/2024 21:06

That's what happens when you read the hard right press.

Do you work in the police/justice system?

Do you work with expert witnesses/assessors who provide evidence in such situations?

You're right that there are incredible delays in the courts at the moment, time to hold court proceedings, judge availability, judges retiring and not enough new ones coming up.
