When will the parents of the children killed in the Wimbledon crash get an answer?

Sorry for the daily fail link. This story really resonated with me at the time as I used to work at St Georges and lived close to Wimbledon. It's been ages and those poor parents still have no answers.

What do you think happened? Before people say it's horrible to speculate and none of my business- I know but my kids are similar age and I feel heartbroken for them and you'd be desperate for some kind of closure.

Heartbreaking footage shows Wimbledon crash victim Selena Lau, eight, playing the piano at an end-of-term tea party before Land Rover smashed into grounds of school killing her and another classmate | Daily Mail Online

Wimbledon crash victim, 8, played piano moments before fatal incident

Selena Lau, who was a pupil at The Study Prep school in Wimbledon, was performing at a concert before the £80,000 Land Rover crashed through the primary school's gates.

Driver had an epileptic seizure at the wheel, her first ever. No further action.

It could happen to anyone of us on this thread, including those calling for a charge

I think on the original thread where people seemed out for blood, someone mentioned that this happened to a relative of theirs, had a first fit at the wheel and the accelerator was stuck under the rigid foot of the driver.

I think it was clear that if this had been obviously dangerous driving or neglectful driving/drunk driving a charge would have been made very quickly. i felt it was obvious from the delay that this was a complicated medical thing but got shouted down on other threads

Poor families and poor driver. Awful all round.

SpringCalling · 26/06/2024 19:32

I've only just realised I know the driver. What a nightmare all round

WindsurfingDreams · 26/06/2024 19:34

My heart goes out to everyone involved.

I remember a relative having their first ever epileptic fit in a restaurant, they were in their thirties. I remember it being so stressful because they could no longer drive. But it actually never crossed my mind that actually it could have been so much worse and the first fit could have been while driving

Scruffily · 26/06/2024 19:40

I really don't think the driver's name should have been released, given that it also involves revealing sensitive medical information about her.

Me neither she has done nothing wrong

Another thread has the usual 'she was clearly wealthy' being bandied around. Like thats anything to do with anything.

It has this evening... She's put out a statement. Very sad all round, such a terrible twist of fate.

anunlikelyseahorse · 26/06/2024 19:46

It's just horrible for everyone involved.
However I think these massive cars should have a £££££££ car tax, unless registered to a working farm/ tree surgeon/ living in a properly rural location (ie rutted tracks....not sealed / unsealed roads)

AstonMartha · 26/06/2024 19:48

Imagine having to live with that and knowing that you couldn’t have prevented it.

Awful for everyone involved.

Radiatorrung · 26/06/2024 19:48

Awful tragedy and I’m surprised it took so long for the families. They definitely seem to have been left a long time without answers.

You may be right but thats another subject and another thread entirely, its nothing to do with this incident

Radiatorrung · 26/06/2024 19:51

i thought such a new, expensive car would have an automatic breaking system.

It absolutely does. If the driver had been driving a smaller, lower, lighter vehicle those poor girls might have stood a chance.

I live round the corner from where this happened and the roads are tiny. These kinds of vehicles are not only unnecessary but totally unsuitable.

@SpringCalling

Do you know her well enough to offer support/friendship?

obviously it's devastating for the family/friends/school of the to little girls. But this poor woman, my heart goes out to her, she didn't do anything wrong! It was a devastating incident.

soupfiend · 26/06/2024 19:57

They wouldnt. If it was like another poster at the time described their own relative having a fit at the wheel, their foot was fixed pressing down on the accelerator. How do you think 2 small children survive that heading toward them and just smashing into them in a nissan micra?

It could be likely that due to the fit, the car was accelerating.

Radiatorrung · 26/06/2024 20:05

I understand why the parents aren’t happy tbh as I want to investigate the evidence too.

Radiatorrung · 26/06/2024 20:10

How do you even test for a seizure after an event? An ECG is surely going to be abnormal just due to surveying the devastation of the event?

soupfiend · 26/06/2024 20:11

Do seizures show in the brain after the event?

LlynTegid · 26/06/2024 20:13

Perhaps if it was more difficult to own a Land Rover or SUV, whilst it would not have stopped the crash, the consequences might not have been two deaths.

Radiatorrung · 26/06/2024 20:14

Don’t know but how do you determine whatever does show is a seizure & not just extreme stress/reaction to the aftermath? And surely if medical evidence did show a seizure that would have been clear pretty quickly so why such a long wait?

They've probably spent the last year performing scans and multiple investigations - and quite likely that they have recorded seizure activity during EEG and/or MRI. Plus checking her entire health and internet search history, messages, employer records, all making sure whether she'd ever mentioned any symptoms consistent with a seizure previously (and hadn't) or did anything else that might have caused a seizure. It's not an instant diagnosis, particularly when it's in such awful circumstances, as they'd need to be absolutely certain with evidence, rather than accepting it on the basis of one reported event.

It's not money or influence that has led to this decision, it's medicine. Scientific fact and the Law. She committed no crime so has nothing to answer for.

It takes ages to commission experts for reports, they are booked up for months and months and the right type of expert has to assess it and that takes time to determine who can do what. Plus the CPS is on its knees

It feels like there are a lot of unanswered questions. I can understand the parents anguish.

Presumably now they can hold inquests, some of those answers may be found?
