When will the parents of the children killed in the Wimbledon crash get an answer?

Sorry for the daily fail link. This story really resonated with me at the time as I used to work at St Georges and lived close to Wimbledon. It's been ages and those poor parents still have no answers.

What do you think happened? Before people say it's horrible to speculate and none of my business- I know but my kids are similar age and I feel heartbroken for them and you'd be desperate for some kind of closure.

Heartbreaking footage shows Wimbledon crash victim Selena Lau, eight, playing the piano at an end-of-term tea party before Land Rover smashed into grounds of school killing her and another classmate | Daily Mail Online

Wimbledon crash victim, 8, played piano moments before fatal incident

Selena Lau, who was a pupil at The Study Prep school in Wimbledon, was performing at a concert before the £80,000 Land Rover crashed through the primary school's gates.

We had an accident in a works car park the other week. Car in reverse and the driver had a stroke. Car just reversed v.quickly damaging a building, trapping the driver. A medical condition doesn't care if it's a large car. Wasn't some killed a few yrs ago when a bus driver died at the wheel. It happens and you hope it's not going to be you.

Don’t know but how do you determine whatever does show is a seizure & not just extreme stress/reaction to the aftermath? And surely if medical evidence did show a seizure that would have been clear pretty quickly so why such a long wait?

As well as what others have said the team investigating are also dealing with all life changing and fatal collisions that have happened subsequently as well as some at the beginning that happened before. Attending court hearings to give evidence, coroner’s courts as well. Some of their equipment is used for other crime scenes which they will do and they also do reconstructions where they need the same conditions. If they had just one case they would get it done a lot quicker.

soupfiend · 26/06/2024 21:24

We often have phones removed from clients as part of police investigations, the phones are often gone for 18 months and more. We have to buy them replacement phones as we know they're virtually never coming back.

Radiatorrung · 26/06/2024 21:31

It's not money or influence that has led to this decision, it's medicine. Scientific fact and the Law. She committed no crime so has nothing to answer for.

I don’t know enough about this particular case (although it’s local to me) but I would never trust a ruling just because.

Radiatorrung · 26/06/2024 21:33

And I completely understand why the parents want to see the evidence/ how the decision was made.

NotGoingToLie · 26/06/2024 21:47

It’s a disgrace. What a slap in the face for these families and all who were affected by this traumatic incident. Funny that the driver has seemingly been swanning around the area ever since without a care while the families have gone through hell. Something stinks to high heaven here.

@SpringCalling

Do you know her well enough to offer support/friendship?

obviously it's devastating for the family/friends/school of the to little girls. But this poor woman, my heart goes out to her, she didn't do anything wrong! It was a devastating incident.

Seriously? Save your sympathy for the bereaved parents. Not this woman.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 26/06/2024 21:56

Isn’t epilepsy diagnosed after 2+ seizures? This was, I believe, her first and presumably only one. Big question mark there, of course. And if she’s had seizures since the crash, the diagnosis of epilepsy makes sense.
That all said, having dealt with CPS (twice in 18 years), who weren’t going to prosecute my daughter’s abuser, despite solid evidence and his admission of guilt, I wouldn’t have faith in their investigation of this crash either. Eventually, after further submission of evidence, my daughter’s abuser was prosecuted. But the process of seeking justice was soul destroying and traumatic.
I’m with the parents on this one. As sorry as I am for the driver, no stone should be left unturned. The CPS is known for their less than diligent approach to investigating. And the victims’ families have every right to seek justice rather than accept incompetence.

BlowDryRat · 26/06/2024 22:38

What a horrible, tragic accident. Two little girls dead, their families are devastated, others are maimed and will have seen terrible things and a woman has to live for the rest of her life with the knowledge that she was at the wheel. Awful.

What do you even mean? Swanning around. What reliable source are you quoting?

ApplesinmyPocket · 26/06/2024 23:02

"Funny that the driver has seemingly been swanning around the area ever since without a care while the families have gone through hell. Something stinks to high heaven here."

What?

Driver loses control of car, ploughs into school grounds, with tragic consequences. Obviously no drink or drugs at play (that would have been the first thing tested for) so what are you suggesting happened here other than a traumatic medical episode she couldn't help - that she did it for laughs or something?

I'm not being sarky, I honestly don't understand what 'stinks' and why you find sympathy for the driver such a disgusting thought.

SpringCalling · 26/06/2024 23:09

@AmelieTaylor I've not had anything to do with her since our kids left Prep school together. There were a couple of mums there that if this had happened to them I would have my doubts (arrogant, careless etc) but not Claire. She will be truly devastated and also has three kids of her own to shield. Although i know the cruelty in that - there are 2 kids who can never be shielded now. It's a tragedy all round.

LadyWithLapdog · 27/06/2024 06:57

Those poor families.

I thought initial reports said the driver was discharged from the hospital the same day. I’d have thought she’d be kept in for tests and obs if this was a first event etc. Anyway, this is getting intrusive. What a tragedy and how can those families get over or accept “fate”.

Land Rover Defender: A reboot that lives up to the hype – The Irish Times

This Irish Times write-up of the Land Rover Defender merrily exclaims that:

"Speaking to The Irish Times at the launch, Nick Collins, the Defender's vehicle line director explained that "an example of one of our toughest sign-off tests was to get the Defender to overcome hitting a 200mm high square-edged kerb at 40km/h. Now if you happen to be unlucky enough to be the test driver of that car, that's quite an extreme input. That specific test will generate 7 tonnes of load through the suspension, through the links and into the body structure." And the new Defender can cope. This is heavy duty off-roading."

As this Twitter commenter pointed out "Not great news for any pedestrian standing on the other side of that kerb." Apparently, neither the Irish Times not the vehicle line director appear to have given the slightest thought to the danger this poses to anyone on the pavement.

(2) Ciarán Cuffe on X: "Yikes. The new Land Rover Defender can “overcome hitting a 200mm high square-edged kerb at 40km/h”. Not great news for any pedestrian standing on the other side of that kerb. t.co/cZuZWbwBmL" / X (twitter.com)

Frankly? This makes me so angry that I really don't care if the woman concerned had a medical issue behind the wheel. She chose to drive a stupid and dangerous vehicle in a built up urban area.

Just going to repeat what I posted earlier.

This woman did not choose to have a medical incident. But she chose to buy and drive a vehicle about which its maker brag that "an example of one of our toughest sign-off tests was to get the Defender to overcome hitting a 200mm high square-edged kerb at 40km/h."

Pathetic.

People need to stop using these vehicles in built-up urban areas. It's not acceptable. These kinds of vehicles belong on farms and the like.

@SpringCalling thank you for your reply. That's interesting you feel that way. There are some reports of her well known husband (I still don't know who he is mind) having some influence over the outcome. Don't think this would be possible, let alone probable??)

on one hand I feel very sorry for her & don't know how she's coping with it, but on the other hand if the reports are correct, I'm disgusted?!

beckybarefoot · 27/06/2024 15:37

Is this the woman who had a medical episode while driving? i'm sure its now in the hands of the justice system.. and i wouldn't hold your breath on that being quick.

without going into too much details my DSS is facing court for 3 counts of rape and so far we are nearing the end of 3 years since it happened!

What do you mean by "seemingly"?

Did someone tell you or did you read it somewhere?

Please check the link upthread for an explanation of how epilepsy is diagnosed (and bear in mind in the circumstances, it's incredibly unlikely any consultant would say 'I'll just have a guess that you're epileptic rather than put you through tests to establish what is happening/that you're not actively dying of a brain tumour'. Can't fake seizures in an MRI.

SpringCalling · 27/06/2024 18:03

@AmelieTaylor Her husband isn't a lawyer / in police / medicine, although he is highly intelligent and well paid. I wouldn't call him well known at all. I'm sure he makes sure his wife has the best legal and therapeutic help possible, as we all would in this awful situation if we could afford it. But I think any talk of him being able to sway the outcome is nonsense. This was a tragic tragic accident. I'm currently wrestling whether to tell my young teen daughter. i don't want her to hear then immediately jump on their WA group with no doubt well intentioned comment, although i'm hoping that this ladies' kids are being kept away from all phones atm. But just in case I'm thinking it could be better to control the narrative as my dd is too near not to find out.

Their representatives can obtain it after the inquest and they will probably put a civil claim in against the driver/her insurance.

SophieNW6 · 07/07/2024 19:25

Really shocking incident and horrifying for all involved. Hopefully the inquests will allow for a rather more transparent judicial process. It is interesting, the drivers choice of solicitor https://www.phb.co.uk/profile/mark-jones/
to represent her interests, and who no doubt penned the very carefully worded statement released once the CPS decision was made public.

It says at the end of the article that the interview with Claire took place in February 2023.

It was before the crash took place. I don't think it needs to be taken down.

And if the poster wishes to quibble about this (as in 'anyone can put that at the end'), the source code on the interior designer's website uploaded the pages/images of their home in April-May 2023.

Radiatorrung · 08/07/2024 19:22

It’s interesting that any images of he4 and her husband have been scrubbed from the web (he is pretty high profile career wise) but the DM still managed to find one and publish it!
