Jay Z at the Grammys

I found it so awkward. It's unlucky that Beyonce hasn't got album of the year but his argument seemed to be that she should have because she got loads of others?

It just seemed really cringe to me!

IMO Beyoncé is hugely overrated.

im not saying she’s not a good, even great singer and performer. But I just don’t think she’s actually incredible. She’s just well marketed with a good balance of relatability/ the best, ride or die friend, got your back vibe. But also some mystic / do we really know her kind of intrigue.

its like, we're all told shes the best so we all accept it as truth.

TheTwirlyPoos · 05/02/2024 09:54

Yeah I agree to be honest. But even if she was/is great I thought the point of awards was awarding a specific thing. So if people have released better albums at that specific time then it's just unlucky!

Not a huge Beyonce fan, I like some of her songs but she is massively overrated although she looks like she puts on an amazing perfomance! I live with a Swiftie so I have no choice but to like Taylor Swift!

I thought it was nuts and uncomfortably linked to Kanye West in my mind.

Complaining about one particular award seemed really odd...the metrics thing...Beyonce has lots of Grammys so he's fretting over one she hasn't got?!

Just generally, using that platform to make his comments...I realise Beyonce can't stop him saying that but in her place, I'd be pissed off and embarrassed about it. Dude....you need to calm down!

tothelefttotheleft · 07/02/2024 11:18

I didn't understand why Blue was there with him. She's a child being taken to his work? Seemed weird to me.

Moonshine5 · 07/02/2024 11:29

Wow. Maybe if you are not familiar with her body of work or Jay Z's experience / contribution to the music industry you should respond to threads you do know about.
Otherwise comments like this could sound ignorant at best.
Ps. His speech or "argument" as OP put it was not that basic.

TheTwirlyPoos · 07/02/2024 12:07

Goodness that was uncessarily snippy of you?!

Jay Z''s contribution to the music industry is irrelevant. It's just very awkward to have a man stand up, accept an aware and then slag off the organiser themselves for not giving his wife one. In front of his child.

DocOck · 07/02/2024 12:24

I thought he looked like a prize prick and she looked embarrassed. Nice that he stands up for her like that in public but maybe he could also not cheat on her (there are a lot of "rumours" about that.

This! Beyonce keeps hauling her kid on stage to do dance solos and stuff. Cringe.
If I'd paid the extortionate ticket price to watch Beyonce and was forced to ensure a solo act by her random daughter, I'd not be pleased.
Nepotism in all its glory.

EmmaStone · 07/02/2024 12:32

This and the Barbie Oscars thing just seems like some very rich people feeling entitled, perhaps they've forgotten what it means when someone says no to them.

CantDealwithChristmas · 07/02/2024 12:34

In my view he was seeking to make a wider point about how the Grammys consistently snubs Black artists for AOTY.

It's been 26 years since a Black female artist won AOTY despite the cultural dominance of Black-origin music in every area of modern popular music.

Also, Midnights was just not that good. SZA should've had AOTY. And Bey should definitely have got AOTY for Lemonade back when that was released.

Calm down. Even Jay Z said music was subjective and Beyoncé has no fox given right to win a specific award. That he's gone on stage and said it is embarrassing for him (and his daughter and probably Beyoncé).

MrsJamin · 07/02/2024 12:40

Jay z sounded like a dick. It was very uncomfortable to watch and she looked embarrassed. I don't think Beyonce is known for albums, more songs/recordings/videos. Midnights rightly won album of the year. Poor Taylor again being undermined when she rightly won an award.

Moonshine5 · 07/02/2024 12:42

@CantDealwithChristmas agree 💯%

Why doesn't he just say that then? Or not turn up and make a stand? Instead he just belittles another extremely successful artist.

DocOck · 07/02/2024 12:44

@MrsJamin I don't get why she's not allowed to just win an award without someone wanting to ruin it for her every time, make out other people are more deserving. It's the nature of awards, not everyone can win...

SirenSays · 07/02/2024 12:44

According to Splinter, the most coveted “Big Four” categories — Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist — almost always go to white people, while artists of color typically win awards in genres with which their race is often associated like the R&B, Rap and Urban categories.

Pop icon Beyoncé’s victories are a prime example of which categories Black artists like herself are ‘allowed’ to win. Beyoncé has won 22 Grammys in her career, and only four of those Grammy Awards don’t have the words “R&B” or “Urban” (or both) in them, according to The Undefeated.

ohididntrealise · 07/02/2024 12:57

I thought that wee girl looked very nervous and uncomfortable, even before his speech turned to the part about Beyoncé.

I also don't understand why she was up there. She didn't look comfortable at all.

I don't think he should have said that with the daughter standing there, it wasn't fair on her and ruined what should have been a nice moment (well, a nicer moment, as I said I think it was unnecessary for the daughter to be up there in the first place).

What is record of the year, please? What is the difference between that and song / album of the year?

TheTwirlyPoos · 07/02/2024 13:01

Making a comment about race stats would have been valid instead of a speech about his wife.
Had he said what @CantDealwithChristmas said that would have been much more balanced.

Again it just sounded like an attack on Taylor.

Song is awarded to the songwriters, Record is more about the people who recorded the song itself.

ohididntrealise · 07/02/2024 17:03

@MrsJamin I don't know that, thank you

LlynTegid · 07/02/2024 17:06

The former drug dealer allegedly of crack cocaine probably has a point about bias in the music industry, regardless of what you think about his wife's music.
