I found it so awkward. It's unlucky that Beyonce hasn't got album of the year but his argument seemed to be that she should have because she got loads of others?

It just seemed really cringe to me!

@NashvilleQueen

I like that!

But he wasn't attacking Taylor, his award was given out before this years AOTY was announced. He didn't mention any names, said sometimes the Grammys will get it right, sometimes ppl will feel they were robbed, etc. I like Taylor, but do love Beyoncé and because of the cultural
Impact of some of her albums on the music business and the work involved I do find it baffling that she hasn't won AOTY. Even Adele agreed a few yrs ago when she won the award over Beyoncé's Lemonade album. Yea, it does feel sometimes like rich, mega successful people are moaning about something so unimportant, and that in the grand scheme of things it's just a Grammy. But there is a point there about black women having to work twice as hard and still not getting the recognition, and not just in showbiz but life in general. The last black woman to win album of the year was Lauryn Hill in the late 90's- even if you don't like Beyoncé, can you really say that no album by a black woman has been worthy of AOTY since then? SZA's album for example was incredible. Even Macklemore was embarrassed when he won the award over Kendrick Lamar several yrs ago - sometimes mediocre things made by white people do win out or get more attention over excellent works created by black artists, and that is something to be rightly Annoyed about.

Beyonce should have won for 'Lemonade' the year Adele won loads. That was the problem.

None of Beyonces music is memorable to me. She has no 'anthem'.

fluffycatkins · 07/02/2024 23:34

I have one Swifty and one hip hop fan in my house.
They both agree that he had a valid point.

Travis is good enough for a performance but his category is announced before the show?

They had a little bit about rap turning 50 but the category wasn't announced during the show. They are a very white skewed show despite the huge influence of black music.

MrsJamin · 08/02/2024 06:22

In the end he might have had a point but there was something about the delivery that was weird. I'm sure black artists have been overlooked in the past. I didn't realise this occurred before Taylor got the award. What was also odd was that they left after he got the award. A bit rude?

I saw this on X

I agree, the hypocrisy of the situation was ridiculous

splatmouse · 08/02/2024 07:28

Is it not a bit tainted now? If Beyoncé were to win the AOTY award next time will it be because her album deserves it or because her husband threw a strop?

I feel the same about Taylor Swift, I just don't get the hype and I'm no particular fan of Beyonce but do find your remark disparaging based on the point being made regarding race etc

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 08/02/2024 08:18

Pretty galling for Taylor Swift that twice now she's won an award but some guy publicly says that Beyonce should have won instead.

If Beyonce has won so many Grammys in the past I can't see how there's also an argument that she's been overlooked (although Lemonade not winning was a complete injustice).

He can have a point but wouldn't it be better made if he decided to boycott the awards rather than pick one up and then ruin somebody else's award?

It's really shitty to do this to Taylor Swift twice

fluffycatkins · 08/02/2024 12:25

@kirinm At the point he made his speech no one knew who had won the award and I personally wouldn't have said that Taylor was the clear favorite going in.
