Surprised at Waitrose staff member!

SaintJulian · 04/02/2024 14:33

I was in Waitrose earlier and used their customer loo.

As I was washing my hands, a member of staff came out of the other cubicle and left without washing her hands.

I was genuinely shocked!
Would you tell the store?

OP posts:
JollyHostess101 · 04/02/2024 15:05

I work at the airport and never washed my hands in the public loo as the soap was awful to my hands so I’d use my own hand sanitiser back at my desk!!

LonginesPrime · 04/02/2024 15:06

Or having a panic attack or anything - there are millions of reasons someone might duck into a cubicle for some privacy without actually needing the loo.

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/02/2024 15:08

I thought this about a friend at the theatre once. Outright asked, she carried anti-bac (pre-pandemic ) used it in the cubicle and used it again after touching exit door handle. So her hands were probably cleaner than mine.

I would have asked staff member directly.

fonfusedm · 04/02/2024 15:12

Personally if I go into a cubicle & don’t use the toilet I still wash my hands as I’ve touched the latch/handle.

It’s grim but if someone goes to the toilet & despite someone else being there still isn’t bothered to wash their hands then I don’t think you can take the grimness out of them!

Opinuga · 04/02/2024 15:12

Not Waitrose, surely??! My god, things really are in terminal decline since we lost our dear old queen.

🤣

Yep, would risk Lidl or Asda if I were OP.

PaulCostinRIP · 04/02/2024 15:23

I can't understand in these situations why you wouldn't immediately address the issue with them?!

"Excuse me, you haven't washed your hands!"

What's she going to do? Shoot you?

Yeah right 😀You could tell on them to the manager, as well.

Well, if they didn't wash their hands, they could be capable of anything...

MoonWoman69 · 04/02/2024 15:34

Oh dear... I think OP needs to get some experience in the hygiene of other supermarket toilets... For instance, a nice challenge would be busting for a wee in Lidl, only to find that some "nice" person has left the tracks of yesterdays dinner down the pan! So, too desperate to be able to wait, you have to navigate a crouching/squatting position, in case dear old dumper has left any little presents behind on the seat itself... Could it possibly be that the staff member had been in to check a situation out, such as this? Or do we feel that "taking the kids to the pool" in Waitrose toilets is just one step beyond the pale?! As a host of people have already stated, not everyone that goes into a toilet, uses it for its intended purpose! I worked in M & S, you want to see the stuff the staff get up to in there! Makes you shudder!!! 😁

Like not cleaning behind their ears.

roseberrycherry · 04/02/2024 16:01

Wow I'd love to have this much time on my hands..

Opinuga · 04/02/2024 16:04

OMG you can't just leave it at that. What do they do at M&S? Scrunch instead of fold? (Sooo wasteful ...) Put the loo roll on the wrong way round? Smoke crack pipes and turn tricks for cash?

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 04/02/2024 16:26

Did you follow her to see which part of the store she works in. I ask as I work on the counters in a different supermarket. In any food prep area such as counters, bakery or café it is automatic to wash your hands immediately you enter the area, you can be disciplined if you don't. Now I agree she should have washed them before she left the toilet area but I do know how annoying it is to wash them there, knowing customers may be watching, walk across the shop floor not touching anything then immediately wash them a second time as I reach the counters. It happens ever time I use the toilet at work, she may have short cut one of the washes.

Delphiniumandlupins · 04/02/2024 16:26

I would have been genuinely shocked as well. You just don't expect that kind of thing in Waitrose

She might've popped in for a line and a fiddle.

Serencwtch · 04/02/2024 18:27

The customer loos are checked every hour so guess she was probably checking the cubicles.
You would be surprised the number of grown adults who can't flush the loo after themselves so we often have to flush it for them.
We have to remove our aprons before checking the loos or doing bins & there is a hand wash station in the area where we leave our aprons so we wash hands there & put apron back on before returning to shop floor task.
We are actually not allowed to use the customer loos when in uniform.

Hope that clears it up OP although you haven't returned so assume you did complain & the manager explained this leaving you feeling a bit silly. Not to worry it does give us a laugh.

She's at home resting on her fainting couch while her husband calls 101.

dayswithaY · 04/02/2024 19:36

I know some Waitrose partners. Sometimes they get sent in to the customer toilets to check them as the public leave them in such a mess.

Sometimes they have to check that school kids aren’t in there, vaping.

Shoplifters stash things in there if they think they’ve been caught on camera.

Occasionally, other partners have been known to dash in there and check their phone (away from their manager). Sometimes the public upset them.

Really, don’t worry about it. There’s war going on in other parts of the world.

Priminister · 04/02/2024 19:38

Surprised OP isn’t sobbing and shaking.

WeAreWarriorsWeAreWarriors · 04/02/2024 19:42

If you touch the door latch you wash your hands, simple. Someone has gone for a poo, touched the latch, then you have. Just wash your hands 🤢

InTheRainOnATrain · 04/02/2024 19:43

Thank fuck the Waitrose I worked in was in a shopping centre so only had staff toilets!

Obviously I wash my hands but she could have been checking it for cleanliness…

But honestly, after touching all those products handled by so money people, a checkout, physical money, cleaning up a bottle of smashed navy rum, a customer returning a rotten chicken (probably left it out the fridge, refunded it anyway) and that one time the fish counter didn’t seal the fucking bag so a whole salmon just fell in my hands… the loos were probably the least gross thing I’d touch on your average shift 🤷‍♀️
