Can you do a press up and how old are you?

I’m 55 and do an awesome plank. But my press-up is an apologetic little dip you’d hardly notice. I don’t know hoe you get better at it…

56 and no! But I love the feel of a press up type action, can really feel it working my arms. I do them on a raised surface. So feet on the floor, hands on a chair.

DrRichardWebber · 03/02/2024 21:57

Yes, I can do sets of ten proper ones. Last year I couldn’t do any and wanted to get at least one, so I started doing 100 every day of the knee ones. Increasing the amount of reps I could do each time. Then by the end of the year I could do several proper ones.

Beandoodle · 03/02/2024 21:58

Yes 46, body pump fan 💪🏼

Hellocatshome · 03/02/2024 21:58

40 and yes up until I broke my elbow but now my arm just collapses unde me. I can do awesome squats though.

Supersimkin2 · 03/02/2024 21:58

I can do one. I am 56. And proud.

megletthesecond · 03/02/2024 21:59

Yes, quite a few proper ones. I'm 49.
Did kickboxing for a few years and still do body pump and pilates.

MrSlant · 03/02/2024 21:59

49 and 3/4 and I've been going to the gym religiously for at least 5 years and like you OP my planks are majestic but press-ups, pfft, barely a dip.

1TangoWhiskeyAlphaTango · 03/02/2024 22:00

I'm 38 and yesi can

Entangledlife · 03/02/2024 22:00

I'm 53 and can do 15 before I start to snake. A year ago I couldn't do any. Start on your knees or against a wall or table, wherever you can fully feel the movement, and gradually build from there. It feels like forever to progress but suddenly you'll find you can do it 😊

notknowledgeable · 03/02/2024 22:00

60s, and never in my life have i been able to do a single pressup

Twattergy · 03/02/2024 22:00

I'm 48 and I can press up but not completely so my chest is to the ground...more like 80% of the way and up again. I can do 12 in a straight row and about x4 sets of 12 over a session. Start with your knees on the ground and just drop as far as is possible. Gradually go lower each time you practice then lift your knees off. Dont rush it, a good slow form is more impactful than quick. If you can do a great plank you are 25% of the way there because it is about your core as well as arm strength.

Bemyclementine · 03/02/2024 22:01

Yes. 46 and fat.

Riverlee · 03/02/2024 22:01

Nope, not successfully, but never really been able to do them .

Treayi · 03/02/2024 22:01

i can now (36) but couldn’t a couple of years ago, I started out with wall ones, then just doing the down part on my knees, then full knees and now full press ups, quite the journey! I was awfully unfit so had to do that with everything, breaking it down into very easy things and slowly build up!

soupfiend · 03/02/2024 22:02

50s, never been able to do a press up, or a cartwheel, or a handstand, or a forward roll (is that what they're called?)

LaPalmaLlama · 03/02/2024 22:02

49- five full, chest to floor. I’ve always been able to do them. Don’t really go to the gym. I am pathetic at squats however.

BusySittingDown · 03/02/2024 22:03

Yes, I can do a few sets of 10. I am 40.

Pull ups are my nemesis though. I can manage 1 unassisted on a good day 😢 I can do about 10 assisted with resistance bands.

Waitingfordoggo · 03/02/2024 22:03

Yes, I can do quite a lot. I am 46. It’s part of my job so I get plenty of practice 😂

IncompleteSenten · 03/02/2024 22:03

I'm 50 and no. If I can touch my toes I consider that a win.

PermanentTemporary · 03/02/2024 22:04

54 and can do a reasonable 10 on knees, but no full ones.

SlipperyLizard · 03/02/2024 22:04

I’m 46 and can do 5 full press ups. Joined a gym last April and could not even really do one on my knees.

Practice is the only way to get better, either on knees or a raised surface (stairs are good) or use a fabric resistance band placed just above your elbows to help bear your body weight. Also doing just the downward phase, as slowly as you can, helps build the right muscles.

Waitingfordoggo · 03/02/2024 22:05

@BusySittingDown I can do two but can’t seem to progress 😂 For a brief period, I could do three but I was a bit younger then and very fit at the time.

BIWI · 03/02/2024 22:07

64, and yes. I hate them though and moan when the PT tells me to do them! I prefer doing them with hands narrow beneath me, rather than wide. And if I can get away with doing them on my knees.

Routinely do a 2 minute plank as part of my warm-up.

But I cannot do a sit-up without someone standing on my feet!

I have tried this method for years and still can't do a single proper one. I can do 20+ lay down push ups but just can't make that shift.

over50andfab · 03/02/2024 22:11

Soon to be 64 and can do bicep press-ups several in a row. Tricep press-ups not so much. This is thanks to several years of Les Mills classes like Tone and Attack.
