I’m 55 and do an awesome plank. But my press-up is an apologetic little dip you’d hardly notice. I don’t know hoe you get better at it…

Soon to be 64 and can do bicep press-ups several in a row. Tricep press-ups not so much. This is thanks to several years of Les Mills classes like Tone and Attack.

By bicep push up, do you mean with the hands set wide and elbows wide? If so, yes the biceps will get some work in that position, but it is mostly the chest and shoulders.

37 and nope can't do a plank or press up. Have hypermobile elbows and a tremor that affects my arms.

AnnaMagnani · 04/02/2024 12:30

I'm also hypermobile. When I started I couldn't do a plank as it just triggered tendonitis.

A lot of plank avoiding exercise later, I can do a plank for a minute and no elbow issues anymore.

spicedlemonpie · 04/02/2024 12:35

If i fall to the floor and use my arms to get back up i think that counts as a press up.

AtomicBlondeRose · 04/02/2024 12:35

44 and yes but 6 months ago I couldn’t do a single one! Only on my knees. It was a very good feeling to do a full set of proper ones during a workout finally.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 04/02/2024 12:45

Press ups - no
Plank - no
Pull ups - no
Sit up - just about !
I'm not very flexible either.

VaddaABeetch · 04/02/2024 12:46

55 & can do about 30

SwordToFlamethrower · 04/02/2024 14:05

Nearly 47 and yes, in the form of vinyasas

Ouchmyarse · 04/02/2024 14:08

44 and not a chance. couldn’t even do one as a child. They made me do one in PE when I was 10
and I broke my nose on the floor.

lieselotte · 04/02/2024 14:17

I am rubbish at them too and that's after years of working with a PT and doing bootcamp type classes. I can do a few decent ones on my knees, and I can do the hand release type from my toes where I let myself down and then back on up on my knees.

Sometimes we have to do 20-30 at a time at the bootcamp, which is counter-productive as you end up rushing them (and making them very shallow). It's better to do ten decent ones in my view!

I do yes and biceps getting some work is good enough for me plus it’s also about core strength which is so important as we age. I also do other exercise to target the biceps and have a great teacher.

Musicaltheatremum · 04/02/2024 14:26

I'm 60. No I can't. My husband is 65 -yes does loads. My dad is 91 and does 20 a day!!!!!

newtb · 04/02/2024 14:30

60s, no pressups but used to bé able to do 8 chin-ups. Quite stupidly proud of that.

Delatron · 04/02/2024 14:32

I’m 47 and normally shoot for around 16 if I haven’t done any for a while and 20 if I’ve been practicing!

My arms are proportionally stronger than my legs though!

I teach Pilates and everyone has strengths in different areas. Many of my clients can’t do push ups but are strong elsewhere.

Abouttimemum · 04/02/2024 14:45

42 and yes I can do the press ups as part of a work out but i rarely do them on their own. It’s usually about 5 or 6 a set. I couldn’t do them 10 years ago but moved from just cardio to cardio and strength training as I got older and feel much better in myself.

LuciferRising · 04/02/2024 14:51

I'm 46. Started to do them each morning this year. I'm currently on 10x3 full pressups.

In martial arts classes we tend to do about 50 plus throughout the lessons. I wanted to get faster and beat the men. Unlikely though.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 04/02/2024 14:57

Zero, I can't believe so many can though, it's inspiring 😄 I didn't know about the flexibility aspect, could use that as an excuse.

MikeRafone · 04/02/2024 15:00

Yes, 12 at one time with right angle upper arm to floor.
practice and a lot of upper body workouts

i want to be able to do wall balls, that’s my failing

BigButtons · 04/02/2024 15:03

I am 56. I can do them. Got much better at them since training with Caroline Girvan.

Delatron · 04/02/2024 15:10

I don’t think you need to be flexible to do press ups?

LuciferRising · 04/02/2024 15:12

What annoys me is that I can't hold my leg out in front of me for more than a few seconds. I can to the side. Why is that?

Doctorbear · 04/02/2024 15:14
  1. Yes. I do 15/20 press ups every morning 🤷
Delatron · 04/02/2024 15:24

That’s your hip flexor strength most likely. Quads too but many people don’t strengthen hip flexors.

The side is a different muscle -
abductor

LuciferRising · 04/02/2024 15:26

I'm assuming, despite 3x martial arts and 2xyoga, I have weak flexors from having a desk job?
