Young woman imprisoned for murder - is the sentence harsh?

I was reading this case of the very rare occurrence of a woman killing a man. The murder occurred using a car as a weapon essentially and though the sentence fits guidelines for this crime are you in effect removing the woman's right to hear children in her lifetime (or making it a lot more difficult)? Is the socially enforced infertility a by product of the sentence that is quite just or does this discriminate against women in that a man may not suffer in huge the same way (because of extended fertility).

I suppose the law is the law but is the removal of the right to seek a family ever taken into account with sentencing?

Alice Wood - police mugshot

Alice Wood jailed for running over and killing Ryan Watson

Alice Wood, 24, "used her car as a weapon" on Ryan Watson after the pair rowed at a party.

No one has the right to have children, be they in prison or not. There is no such legal right.

It should never be a consideration for sentencing ever. When you commit murder you forgo a normal life and have to live with the consequences of your actions.

Thank God Lucy Letby won't be able to reproduce.

Harsh but fair. I'd not lose sleep if this woman couldn't, either.

She does not deserve children. How about all the crimes of people killing children. Ive just read an article where a mum stabbed all 3 children in Huddersfield-mental health but still!

@PuttingDownRoots

I was just interested form a legal point of view as you are r removing something other than liberty? I think you could argue (to an extent) that the punishment is slightly harsher than a comparable one to a man as the man will leave prison and theoretically have more of a chance to father children. I am not trying to minimise the crime but was only pointing out that a by product of the sentence possibly is that opportunity to have a family and is that really part of the sentence?

A man would’ve got a longer sentence and are more likely to be imprisoned anyway. Life isn’t fair 🤷🏼‍♀️

She made a choice to murder someone, and as such that choice has consequences and the loss of liberty and the chance to have children is part of that.

It isn't sad that she won't have any it's a good thing.

Having children is a privilege not a right. If you want children, maybe don't do something that has consequences that will prevent your opportunity to have children. It's not a difficult concept.

ginasevern · 03/02/2024 15:43

The boy she murdered in cold blood was 22. He hadn't exercised his "right" to have children and never will. What's the legal stance on that?

placemats · 03/02/2024 16:12

Ryan was 24 when he was murdered by her. She was 22. She could well be just 40 by the time she is considered for release. @ginasevern.
