Decent salad cream (not Heinz, it's crap now).

Any suggestions please? I rarely buy it any more, the last couple have been Heinz but it tastes worse each time, like rancid oil with acid dropped in.

Is there anything that tastes like Heinz original USED to taste?

I buy M&S own brand one and it’s my favourite out of all the ones I’ve tried. Tesco own brand tastes like plastic and none of the others were particularly nice.

I'm salad cream fan too and have always relied on Heinz, but over the years with needing to buy more non-branded stuff, ended up buying the cheaper stuff. Anyone made it from scratch before?

RestingCatsArseFace · 31/01/2024 21:07

I used to always buy Heinz, lots of it. I look at ingredients lists on stuff now and really don't fancy all the stuff they add, but once in a while I need a salad that resembles the ones I used to have.

Tonight I had salad with oil slime and acid and a slice of polystyrene white bread which was Warburtons tiger, with real butter. I usually get wholemeal. Some treat that turned out to be.

Thank you @Woahtherehoney I will try that next time.

@Nachtvlinder I have often looked at making it but would never use it all. If you use as much as I used to it might be worth it.

I only eat it occasionally as I like it on some types of sandwiches (ham salad) or a homemade quiche, salad and chips. I used to love eating this when I was at school back in the 70s/80s. Nowadays, I normally use salad dressing with olive oil, vinegar etc., on more adventurous salads as my tastes have refined since then!

The M&S one is nice

PieonaBarm · 31/01/2024 21:38

I would say Aldi, it's the best value and vinegary like Heinz used to be. I love vinegar though.....

RestingCatsArseFace · 31/01/2024 21:40

@Nachtvlinder I usually use a good olive oil, but get a bit tired of it sometimes. Plus it doesn't work in a salad sandwhich 😃

Sorry but I don't like the sound of that 😝

Seafood sauce is great on a salad

RestingCatsArseFace · 31/01/2024 21:44

M&S seems to be popular.

I gave up on ketchup as it all tasted of some kind of spice after the changes a few years back, assume all made in the same place. As it's too high in sugar I thought there wasn't much point any more. I miss the way that used to taste too.

We use Asda own brand.

ManchesterLu · 31/01/2024 21:45

I buy Aldi's own brand, the lower fat one. It's only like 99p (bought some today actually) and it tastes nice.

Salad Cream/Mayo annoys me, as I can never get through it as quick as you need to before it needs throwing out.. but at 99p a bottle, I'm happy to pay it and then toss it out when needed.

Goldenbrowntexturelikesun · 31/01/2024 21:48

I’m kind of addicted to salad cream and still use the Heinz one albeit the vegan version as I can’t tolerate eggs, still tastes like the salad cream I’ve loved since childhood but maybe I’ve had way too much of the stuff and it’s buggered up my taste buds lol!

I keep it in the fridge and it has been fine, although not sure about the newer recipes, they already taste as if they have gone off, salad cream that is, not mayo, that really does go off in the fridge so I don't buy it.

It surely doesn't taste like original Heinz Original because even Heinz Original (now) doesn't taste like Heinz Original used to taste, if you get my drift. Without eggs I dread to think what it is like...

I honestly can’t tell the difference but maybe I should try some of the others recommended and see how they taste, my tastebuds may be shot to bits lol!

Asda own brand is good. Full fat though not low fat

Ilovemyshed · 31/01/2024 22:55

This is worth a try. I think their mayo tastes line salad cream.

It should but you need to be careful to check the date and the mayo, if it's proper mayo it will go off and you can get food poisoning from it.

Aren't those the slimming ranges? I have found Sainsburys 'healthy' stuff usually contains sugar, in various forms, with various names so am wary of anything from there.

If I am going to get something as a treat, I want the full fat stuff 😉
