A stirring Tea Question

Mysterian · 30/01/2024 16:50

We were talking about this at work earlier.
I stir my tea in an anti-clockwise direction. Always have and always will because now it just feels wrong not to. I believe tea scientists say the best method is more of a back and forth motion but I say they should give their head a wobble and go do some proper science.

Brew And I mean tea, not coffee.

Oh my gosh. I was having this debate last week with my boss LOL! He stirs three times left, four times right and two criss-crosses for Jesus. I do four times left then two right, and one criss-cross for Jesus! Xx

AnglepoisePond · 30/01/2024 16:59

Absolutely you stir it widdershins!

EffortlessDistraction · 30/01/2024 17:03

I don't stir tea. Pour it from the teapot, add milk, drink. Or lift out teabag, add milk, drink.

I don't stir. I pour water, let it mast, add milk, squeeze the tea bag and lift it out.

DilemmaDelilah · 30/01/2024 17:05

I stir anti clockwise 17 times and then a couple of times clockwise, just to make sure the sugar/sweetener is properly distributed.

Mysterian · 30/01/2024 17:07

How can people not stir at all? What if one side of the cup ends up milkier than the other? Or the difference in densities and heat leads to the milk staying at the bottom of the cup?

In a teapot, clockwise several times and then as it's spinning, anticlockwise once.

In a mug, teabag in, hot water, leave a couple minutes, stir clockwise and lift out bag.

idontlikealdi · 30/01/2024 17:13

I dont drink tea.

If you dont clatter the spoon on the edge of the cup with each stir looking at you dh stir away! the noise he makes sets me on edge. I can hear it in our bedroom which is in the loft conversion. He stirs it about 20 times from the sound of it.

aitchteeaitch · 30/01/2024 17:14

Hang on, I'll just go and check......

.....Anticlockwise.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 30/01/2024 17:16

I don't stir. But then I make it in a mug, with the teeniest spash of milk and no sugar, so no need to stir.

jellybe · 30/01/2024 17:19

I don't stir and (ready to be told this is so wrong) I put milk in the cup first then pour tea over it from my tea pot. It mixes itself. Tastes perfect.

DramaAlpaca · 30/01/2024 17:19

I don't stir it. I don't have sugar and only the tiniest dribble of milk, so no need to.

Els1e · 30/01/2024 17:20

Anticlockwise 3 times, then a double tap with the spoon on the side. 🫖 I was taught by my father in law, a Yorkshireman, so a bloody expert.

Bloody hell you will stir the arse out the mug, there really is no need to stir it that many times. You would set my teeth on edge 😀

OhNaffOffYouWazzock · 30/01/2024 17:33

I don't stir tea, I use a teapot and don't have sugar.

TeabySea · 30/01/2024 17:37

Anticlockwise, under an opened umbrella. Ideally next to a pair of new shoes on the table and some spilled salt.

peachgreen · 30/01/2024 17:37

Clockwise?! You HEATHENS.

Suddha · 30/01/2024 17:45

Etiquette wise you’re supposed to stir back and forth 2-3 times without touching the side of the cup. According to various etiquette experts and the Twinings website!

This for DHs tea, but I have sugar so I stir it around (anti clockwise obvs) and then across a couple of times to check the sugar has all dissolved.

greenacrylicpaint · 30/01/2024 18:36

I don't stir either.
I like to watch the milk cloud.
and the milky bottom tea/coffee yes I treat tea/coffee the same is sooo nice.

soupfiend · 30/01/2024 18:38

Surely it depends what handed you are, right handed stirring will be anti clockwise, not sure it can be the other way round, doesnt sit right. I will try this later

DilemmaDelilah · 30/01/2024 18:41

@TheBayLady I am autistic, and I really dislike it if my sugar/sweetener isn't mixed in properly. But I am always careful not to make too much noise.

ButteryBiscuitBaseBiscuitBase · 30/01/2024 18:48

Clockwise, finishing off with a little, "Bip piddi bip-bip, bip bip," on the side of the cup with the spoon.

RockyRogue1001 · 30/01/2024 18:54

I don't stir either.

Add a teeny bit of milk, fish teabag out with fingers whilst waggling it a bit. Squeeze and chuck in compost bin.

I obvs use a spoon if we have visitors

merryhouse · 30/01/2024 19:04

I don't stir mine because like a pp I pour the tea into the milk from the pot. H has sugar so I stir in a sort of folding motion from one side to the other with a tiny clockwise arc - possibly () shaped Grin

With tea I'll pour half the mug, then put the strainer down and stir before pouring the rest (that way I know I'm not going to slop over the sides). With coffee I pour with my left hand and stir at the same time.
