A stirring Tea Question

Mysterian · 30/01/2024 16:50

We were talking about this at work earlier.
I stir my tea in an anti-clockwise direction. Always have and always will because now it just feels wrong not to. I believe tea scientists say the best method is more of a back and forth motion but I say they should give their head a wobble and go do some proper science.

Brew And I mean tea, not coffee.

I don't stir tea, I use a teapot and don't have sugar.

This. And I firmly believe that stirring and/or squeezing a tea bag gives rise to nasty bitter/acidic notes to the brew.

Pleiades2020 · 31/01/2024 17:55

Clockwise in the northern hemisphere and anti clockwise in the south, to harmonise with the coriolis effect.

To be serious though just once or twice clockwise after adding a tiny bit of milk. I don't have strong tea and reuse the tea bag a couple of times.

lidolemon · 31/01/2024 17:59

If I make it directly in the mug, I use a teabag and I stir anticlockwise. The pot has tea leaves and I stir clockwise. I think I touch the sides for both, but sometimes with the pot I do a 'lift up' motion too.

Do you stir your coffee a different direction? 😂

YOURGUNWINLOTTERYBOI · 31/01/2024 18:12

Anticlockwise 5 times – twice clockwise – two taps with the teaspoon.

RallySooney · 31/01/2024 18:14

Always clockwise. Never clank or tap teaspoon against lip of cup/mug. Ever.

reluctantbrit · 31/01/2024 18:24

No stirring as I drink my tea black without sugar.

But if I have to stir DH's tea then I do it anti clockwise

Blackwidow47 · 31/01/2024 18:36

Well, I am a herbal tea drinker so no milk, BUT I do add a splash of cold water so stir CLOCKWISE…..and really the best and only option!

SirenSays · 31/01/2024 18:38

Anticlockwise for the sugar, and I don't squeeze the teabags.

Jellykat · 31/01/2024 18:39

Clockwise! how could anyone stir anticlockwise thats just plain wrong!

Surely it depends what handed you are, right handed stirring will be anti clockwise, not sure it can be the other way round, doesnt sit right. I will try this later

In a right handed clockwise stirrer. But only if there’s sugar, otherwise no stirring.

TulipTuesday · 31/01/2024 18:46

I do 3 or 4 stirs clockwise to get the bag moving, then rest the spoon across the mug to give the bag the space it needs as it spins. After it’s stopped I give it a big squeeze, remove it and then add a bit of milk. I then give it 3 stirs (clockwise again) to mix the milk.

I can’t stand it when people stir and stir and stir endlessly 😖

I wonder if I can get some kind of science grant for this research?

If you're one of the people who do this: Why do you put your used teabags in a pot/tray/pile by the sink instead of just sticking them in the bin?

Because they are too drippy straight away, they will drip on the way to the bin, you need to put them in the little tea thing by the kettle until you have a pile and then chuck them away

because warm teabags make the bin lid sweaty and yucky

SavingEveryLastPenny · 31/01/2024 19:35

My DF almost whisks it with a spoon. Honestly i tried once spilled and splashed everywhere.
He also re stirs after anyone has made his drink

HardcoreLadyType · 31/01/2024 21:47

I have a teeny teapot, just enough for one cup. I don’t add milk or sugar, so I don’t stir, at all.

My husband leaves them in the sink!

I know, I know, LTB.

RumNotRun · 31/01/2024 22:09

@ButteryBiscuitBaseBiscuitBase off topic but a random bit of knowledge I found out recently is that the bip bippy bip bip tune is known as A Shave and A Haircut en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shave_and_a_Haircut
