My nain used to tell me that I “have the Welsh colouring”. Very dark brown hair and eyes, slightly purplish skin in winter, olive skinned and freckly in summer.

Many people from West wales have dark features like Catherine zeta Jones because there are a lot of genetic links with Spanish whalers and also the Iberian people. My grandfather was very tanned, dark haired and short and my dna came back With Iberian ancestry.

My dh is very welsh. His family on both sides go back generations- no idea how far back. They’re all first language welsh. The short with dark hair and blue eyes descriptions couldn’t be more opposite- he is a giant at 6 foot 5 with blonde hair and brown eyes 😂 I’m welsh (but family tree is not as welsh) with brown hair, pale skin and blue eyes. I don’t think of a stereotypical welsh person but maybe that’s because I live in wales and there doesn’t seem to be one? At least in my bit anyway.

My DNA came back with Iberian ancestry too! I am mostly Welsh with a bit of Irish thrown in.

Noone thinks every single Swedish person is tall with blue eyes and blind hair, but it's a stereotype because it's true of a lot of Swedish people.

And no, not every Welsh person has pale skin, dark thick hair, and a lower average height than the rest of the UK, but a lot of us are. Most countries in the world have populations who have various physical traits more common in that population. We didn't tend to move around that much until the last few hundred years. One day in the future I'm sure humanity will look like one huge homogeneous mass, with no variation by location, but we're not there yet

I can’t imagine how many of you must feel reading this in Wales right now; I’m sorry. Welsh is whatever you look like if you were born in Wales. My gran was Welsh, and two generations later, I’m all the things people seem to be listing (pale, dark hair, blue eyes, etc), but I’m not Welsh, at two generations removed. You know what my gran looked like? She was blonde and got a tan easily every summer. Fucking honestly.

THIS IS THE REAL ANSWER: If anyone is saying to you that you “look ,” insert whatever (Welsh, Irish, Spanish, etc - it’s always hair color or skin color, isn’t it? People never do learn that it’s 2024, yes, in Wales as well), it usually means the person commenting stereotypes others using the broadest, most ‘well-known,’ but outdated and unwelcome, stereotypes and I wouldn’t be overly impressed with them.

I think some people have interpreted other posters responses as “what do you think all welsh people look like?”, but that wasn’t actually the OPs question.

Well the OP set the tone with comment about leeks and rugby shirts. It is the first thread they ever seem to have started on MN which speaks volumes, as does the fact that they haven't bothered to come back to the thread.

My DNA test confirmed me as 94% Welsh with the rest made up of the usual Viking stuff that everyone gets.

This thread is an eye opener! I'm Welsh and never realised people thought Welsh people generally have dark hair and pale skin. I've never ever come across that before 😁.
