Does your name date you to a decade?

I think mine does. Born 1986 and I don't think my name is given to baby girls anymore. It's a one word title of a classic novel.

Yes it was in a War Time magazine story that my great aunt received from a penfriend. Dm remembered it until thé mid 50s. There are less than 400 world wide. I'm the only british person and the only person in France where I live with the name. It's a pain.

I knew an extremely beautiful & cool, Joan…Prob due a resurgence. (Born 1970s).

Yes indeed!

ComorosPearl · 29/01/2024 16:01

@Inextremis 1963? I was at primary school with all those girls. And mine is in your list too.

User14March · 29/01/2024 16:02

@JoanThursday1972 it wasn’t you, was it? ;)

No sorry!

BouleDeSuif · 29/01/2024 07:52

No- I was bullied at school for having a name nobody had ever heard of and I've only ever met one other with it.

@BouleDeSuif

Haha at your user name! 🤣

fussychica · 29/01/2024 16:05

Yes. Born mid 50s. Actually most people I meet with the same name are usually a few years older than me. I'm very happy with it though, just wish people wouldn't try to lengthen it or spell it wrongly.

User14March · 29/01/2024 16:05

When no one remembers anyone old with the name then it resurges it seems. NB: Violet. Love the name. To my mother & Granny it conjured up the toothless ‘Aunty Vi’ of yore, complete with hairnet.

Is ‘hard to date’ the same as timeless classic. What’s a true, timeless classic?

Sarah? Lots in 70s/ Rebecca?

IMO if it’s a ‘royal’ name, or found in Shakespeare, e.g. Helena, it’s not likely to date. It may have periods of more or less popularity, but it probably won’t pinpoint you to a particular decade.

Oldraver · 29/01/2024 16:16

My name is very 60's

User14March · 29/01/2024 16:19

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER Shakespearian, yes, ofc. Oberon it is then :).

Reagan & Goneril…

Wonder why some more appealing than others (?)

Whatwillbewillbe
"Born 1961 and in my school there were a few names used on repeat as almost everyone was named after a granny or aunty. Names like Margaret, Anne, Mary, Kathleen, Catherine, Elizabeth, Helen, Sarah etc. The boys were James, Peter, John, Michael, Joseph, Daniel, Patrick etc. It also was common to have cousins with identical first and second names."

I was born in the 1950s and both my names are on the list there. 😳

My mother decided to use my middle name every day, in school etc etc.
I hated it so much.

So in my 50s I changed my name slightly and I love it now.

My daughter doesn't like her name and I love it, it's the same as yours OP!

I named her after a strong and indomitable woman from my village and still love it.

BreakfastAtMilliways · 30/01/2024 00:09

My name is more common in Germany and Scandinavia than it is here. The English version of it (which I hate) is a 40s-50s name along with ones like Susan or Sandra or Janet. Mine has become a bit more popular of late (there’s a singer or two with that name) but isn’t especially linked to my generation.

Janniss543 · 30/01/2024 00:10

I am Elena, my older sister is Carmen, my younger sister is Sofia. Obv a Spanish family in UK
Our youngest sister is SANDRA haha she's in her 20s and gutted

Deathraystare · 30/01/2024 07:38

Yes I think it does. Was very popular in the 60's. I was born 1960. I think there were 3 of us in the same class. I slightly changed my name (shortened it) as I hate it.

NextPrimeMinister · 30/01/2024 07:51

Mine was around, but not popular in the 60s and 70s, so due to it's lack of popularity it doesn't date me like some do, but I've yet to meet anyone a) with it or b) younger than me. It marks me as 'old' but not to a specific point in time.

JDJT · 30/01/2024 08:05

No. Never knew anyone else with my name at the same age as me. I think it was only used before I was born really, and still pretty uncommon then. After a huge weather disaster (many can probably guess it now) that was named it, I doubt there are many babies with this name now either!
I was nearly called Olivia. Glad I didn't have such a common one though!

SunshineAndRainbowsToday · 30/01/2024 08:08

No. My parents gave me a name that was popular decades before I was born. I have never met anyone with my name who isn't at least 20 years older than me. Though I did once meet one kid with the name. Only ever the one though.

Delatron · 30/01/2024 09:06

I was born mid 70s - my name not particular I didn’t think to that decade. But then there is a famous singer a good 10 years younger than me (begins with A). Hoped she would be a flash in the pan. She was not!

Still not an overly popular name though. Wierdly a few at my school then never met another one.

bruffin · 30/01/2024 09:15

Born early 60's and think my name was more 50's. But saying that there was 4 in one of my primery classes. My parent's name me it because they wanted an anglicized greek name

Cotswoldmama · 30/01/2024 09:54

My name is Lauren I think most people could guess the decade I was born in. I've only ever met two other Lauren's but I feel like my name was quite popular at the time and I actually really like my name.

Amdone123 · 30/01/2024 10:13

@Cotswoldmama 1990s ! I'll say you were born in 1992 🤣.
Lauren is a lovely name. I admit I prefer Laura, Sophie etc to Lauren, Chloe, etc, but they are lovely sounding names.

BogRollBOGOF · 30/01/2024 10:21

Girls of my year through school tended to be Katie, Lauren, Lisa, Anna-Marie, Rebecca, Emma, Gemma, Maria, Louise, Helen, Jennifer, Stephanie, Georgina, Victoria, Karen, Anna, Kerry, Leanne, Elizabeth, Lucy.

I was named at the early end of my name's popularity. I'd say it's a name of its decade and not too clichéd to swing back round, but not an ageless classic in the way that the boys names were. Most of the boys I went to school with were saints names and half could easily be the name of a CoE church 😁

Cotswoldmama · 30/01/2024 10:26

I'm actually 80s, 1984 I think I was probably one of the earlier Laurens!

I guess your 80s like me as I remember all those, names apart from Karen, I would think of that as more 60/70s name
