Does your name date you to a decade?

I think mine does. Born 1986 and I don't think my name is given to baby girls anymore. It's a one word title of a classic novel.

I don't know that it does.
My name is Esther.

Any decade spring to mind for anyone?

Amdone123 · 29/01/2024 09:30

@puddypud Olivia ?
@trisky 1968 ?

I was born in 1967. My name definitely belongs to the 60s, 70s.
There were about 4 of us in my form class in secondary school and about 10 in the year. Never bothered me though.

Yes. And I never met another one until I was mid 20's.

LauderSyme · 29/01/2024 15:06

Mine is definitely a middle-aged to pensioner-aged name. Although I met a tween-age one recently and was very surprised!

It's a familiar name but not that common. There were no others at any of my schools but several around my age at a recent workplace.

Dee1224 · 29/01/2024 15:08

Re: Lisa - yes, Lisa, (aka Lalisa), is the most popular member of Blackpink, so I would expect quite a few little Lisas are being born atm!

Fully expecting a resurgence in the number of Jennies, (also due to Blackpink!)

Amdone123 · 29/01/2024 15:08

@puddypud it's a beautiful name.
@guessguessguessmyage Esther is lovely, one of my favourites. I was at college with an Esther ( she'd be 56 now). Her sister was Nancy. Also lovely.
It's a classic, timeless name so I don't think it does belong to a specific year but I'd guess you are late 50s, early 60s.
I taught an Esther but she was from Nigeria.
Also, Esther Rantzen but other than that, it's quite rare considering its beauty.

Notthesameasitwas · 29/01/2024 15:10

Yes 1960s as I was named after a song which was popular at the time. It’s not a particularly common name though.

timetofetgit · 29/01/2024 15:12

Middle name 100% dates me! Luckily first name is timeless, and unusual.

timetofetgit · 29/01/2024 15:13

Buggar to spell though....thanks mum!

Duckingella · 29/01/2024 15:22

Born in the 1980's

Popular names seemed to be Rebecca,Racheal,Laura,Louise,Claire,Ruth,Hanna,Gemma,Emma,Lisa,Katie,Hayley,Nicola,Amy,Sarah,Natalie,Danielle and Chantelle.

From the early 1980's there were still a fair few Tracey's and Joanna's.

Haven't come across a good number of the above names in anyone I know under 18 and I know no one under 30 called Tracie/Tracey.

I know it would be a bit outing but this thread is hard to follow without people saying what their names actually are!!

OP, is your name Annie!?

Close actually. I'm early 50s

It's never been a particularly popular name I don't think but it plods along steadily across the generations.

goodgriefsean · 29/01/2024 15:29

I think we have the same name 😂 but I was born a year before you. I was one of dozens at school.

pinkstripeycat · 29/01/2024 15:32

I feel like bullying myself for my awful 1970s name! I absolutely hate it and feel embarrassed of it. Of course no one else notices. My 2 middle names aren’t much better.

TedLasto · 29/01/2024 15:35

Mine - yes, pretty much, though the version ending in 'e' much more popular than mine ending in 'a' - were loads at school and I was always being called by the wrong name. Looking at the graphs my name actually peaked in popularity in the 90s (I was born in the 70s) so maybe people think I've had a REALLY hard life.

Other most popular names at school were Catherine (by far the most popular), Emma, Louise, Claire (2nd most popular), Sarah, Rachel, Helen, Victoria, Elizabeth, Caroline, Rebecca

scrivette · 29/01/2024 15:37

Yes, you don't hear of it now but I think it will make a comeback in the next 15 years. In one of my classes as secondary there were 4 of us with the same name. OP I think your name is my middle name, I know a couple of them under 10.

@PaperwhiteTheFriendlyGhost

No! It's a classic novel by Daphne du Maurier.

Yes, absolutely mine is tied to a certain era for sure.

I do like my name, it is a bit unusual, but in the country where I was born (not UK) it was very popular amongst girls born in the second half of my decade of birth. I am older now but am not going to say which decade, think back, and back lol.

Anyhow, I have never failed to know the rough year of birth of anyone with my name! It's bloody great, because they can have all the Botox and plastic surgeries they want, but I KNOW 😂

RuthW · 29/01/2024 15:42

No.

There are 90year old with my name and children.

People with my dd's name are either over 90 or under 15. She's nearly 30.

RuthW · 29/01/2024 15:43

trisky · 29/01/2024 07:56

My name is Anne-Marie.

When was I born?

Mu guess is 70-80s

LauderSyme · 29/01/2024 15:44

@Inextremis 1969 - 1971?

Sorry am cheating with a range of years!

RuthW · 29/01/2024 15:45

Goldenbrowntexturelikesun · 29/01/2024 08:24

My name is Rebecca. It was fairly unusual when I was a child, I only knew one other but now it’s seems quite popular.

My guess is you are in your 70s or 60s as I'm 55 and it was popular when I was at school and still popular in the 90s/2000s when dd was at school.

Inextremis · 29/01/2024 15:46

Earlier than that (and no, you're not cheating 'cos there are no rules!)
