Does your name date you to a decade?

I think mine does. Born 1986 and I don't think my name is given to baby girls anymore. It's a one word title of a classic novel.

Definitely both my first and middle are very 1982
In fact my middle name is often joked about online about all the names 80s parents could've found as a middle name but they all picked Louise. First name is as bad

FizzyStream · 29/01/2024 09:46

I'm trying now to think of names of my classmates in primary school and their names are fairly decade identifiable; though some are more classic.

I noticed a post from someone named Lisa earlier, and I worked with a Chinese woman whose daughter was named Lisa, she's going to be about 7 now.

Lisa has actually seen a rise in popularity in Asian countries I believe, as there is a very famous k-pop singer named Lisa.

Baby Emma was born in August 2023

Emma has been the most popular name in the USA for baby girls for a few years.

@EmiliaRuusuvuori Beryl ?

God no 😀 Mine is slightly better than that.

BarbaricPeach · 29/01/2024 09:50

My name dates me to the wrong time frame. The vast majority of people I've met with either my name or the very similar variant were at least a decade older than me. I go by a short version, which is a classic name not tied to any era in particular.

Looking at the stats, I’ve done something similar with my son’s name. Quite popular around 20 years before he was born. I think boys’ names are less affected by trends though.

Amdone123 · 29/01/2024 09:50

@EmiliaRuusuvuori 🤣, glad I made you feel better about your name 🤣

I think all Staceys to ever exist one born in one particular week in 1987

@EmiliaRuusuvuori
Jean?

I've got a friend called Jean, and another who is Carrie Jean, they were born in 1993 and 1988! Both named after grandmothers but it does seem to be coming back particularly as a middle name.

Moier · 29/01/2024 10:03

Definitely born 1958.. the year a film came to the UK cinemas.. were 5 of us in my school year..( film was Peter Pan).

Jean?

No, I would actually have preferred that one 😀

WhatDecadeWasIBorn · 29/01/2024 10:05

No. My name is Ashleigh, I don't think it dates to a decade and is not that common.

tealweasel · 29/01/2024 10:06

@VampireWeekday I think we might share a name. Does it start with A?

annieloulou · 29/01/2024 10:07

Mine is often described as classic on here. I was born late 60s. No others in my year at school, there was a Spanish girl a couple years above who spelt it slightly differently.

Could apply to any age, there are other versions (see user name 😂), also have the classic middle name of Louise, which I think is underestimated for a first name.

Sleepyquest · 29/01/2024 10:10

It dates me to a decade 20 yrs later than I was born 😁
Extremely rare when I was born, pretty popular a few years ago!

CeeJay81 · 29/01/2024 10:11

Yes definitely. Born 1981 and def have a 70s/80s name. I like the name as an adult, so I'd like it to have a come back.

LikeagoddamnVampire · 29/01/2024 10:11

DivaDroid · 29/01/2024 09:38

My name is quite uncommon, despite a handful (if that) of famous women - a long distance runner, odd American singer/reality show judge, Michael Hutchences ex. Only ever met a few others. I've no feelings either way about my name other than never being able to get stuff with my name on it when I was younger & always being called a similar name 🤷‍♀️

I know 2 Paula's in their early 30's

LifeofBrienne · 29/01/2024 10:11

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 29/01/2024 07:48

My first name and middle name together definitely do. I was born in the 80s.

Your name might be the same as mine! Classic late 70s / early 80s combo. Luckily I’m not one of those on MN who dislike names for being too common.

Beezknees · 29/01/2024 09:48

Emma has been the most popular name in the USA for baby girls for a few years.

I think Friends really boosted its popularity. My guess was Rebecca though !

OP my name isn't linked to any time period but it is very linked to a specific country, and the predictable comments are a bit annoying.

Willmafrockfit · 29/01/2024 10:13

not really
popular with grannies when i was a child
popular now
it was uncommon for my age group - i hated it

ladycarlotta · 29/01/2024 10:14

It was very unusual when/where I grew up (maybe partly a regional thing since I never ever met another as a child, and yet in adulthood I've met quite a few my own age, mainly Londoners). It's gained popularity in the last 15 years though and usually ranks in the 20s-40s range of baby girl names.

Yip. And we even got a haircut named after us too.

New2024 · 29/01/2024 10:15

No, but I was surrounded by Tracey, Debra, Sharon, Karen, Gary and the born in the 60s crowd. That said, I’ve not met anyone with my name under 45 and maybe around 25-30 in total
