Do you say “pardon me”/“excuse me” after each individual burp?

Was talking about this earlier with DD after dinner and she burped and said “pardon” and didn’t for the next 4 consecutive burps. I personally say it again after multiple burps or if I can feel another one brewing I’ll wait until after that one. Is there a correct etiquette regarding this?

I dont really burp either. When I do, I do it in private. It is never involuntary. No one asked, but I don't fart either. People who intentionally do that (farting) in front of others are disgusting.

It is literally a release of air you can’t control. That’s what a burp is. You can reduce the sound - is that what you mean?

No it isn’t. It’s a release of air, but no mention of involuntary. Look in any dictionary.

At home, we generally give a score out of ten with feedback on the resonance, length and tone. Out of the home, I'm more polite. 😉. It's definitely not an eating too quickly thing for me as I'm a slow eater.

I usually just say oof that's better and carry on, especially if it's a big one.
No one bats an eyelid in my house at burping.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 29/01/2024 09:03

I have never been able to burp. It is a God given gift and apparently I was not worthy Sad.

Do people seriously not burp after a meal? Especially a large meal? I can burp 10-15 times after a large meal 🤣 I’d do it under my breath in public though.

No, I seriously don’t. I find that really odd.

TomeTome · 29/01/2024 09:09

If I needed to burp 15 times after a meal I would leave the room not sit there burping all over everyone. Eat a bit slower and chew your food it sounds like you must be gulping down air to need to burp like that.

CurlewKate · 29/01/2024 09:20

I find the Mumsnet attitude to burping and farting bizarre. Of course you excuse yourself if you do either in front of other people-but of course you try not to.

Involuntary? Then how do people manage to control themselves in client meetings
or in front of their boss?

SnapdragonToadflax · 29/01/2024 09:26

The only time I've burped regularly was when I was pregnant. It was such a surprise and so relieving, I really enjoyed it! 😂I rarely feel the need normally though.

I think I'd say excuse me, I'm sorry after one, and then increasing levels of apologetic horror if more emerged.

Burping can be voluntary or involuntary - sometimes you literally can't control it even in client meetings or in front of your boss. You are lucky if that's never happened to you.

DelphiniumBlue · 29/01/2024 09:49

Surely the issue is this frequent burping? Not normal at all, either she is doing it for attention or she needs a medical check up and maybe an overhaul of her diet.
And of course she should apologise each time, it’s pretty disgusting to burp while people are eating.

Gilead · 29/01/2024 09:51

I burp loads since having a stoma fitted, I guess the excess has to exit one way or another!

If you can't burp you probably have RCPD (to the non burpers)

I looked it up, think I probably do have that. I certainly have lots of gurgling noises from throat, which is one of the symptoms.

The treatment is Botox in the mouth / throat apparently.

Doubt I'll be doing that, guess I'll just struggle on as a non burping member of society.

Topseyt123 · 29/01/2024 10:32

DH and I just blame each other, wherever we are. Token efforts are made to control some of the volume in public areas.

We used to be able to blame the dog, but he sadly is no longer with us.

Same for farts.

Genuinely posh people consider it a bit try-hard. Like saying serviette instead of napkin

But genuinely posh people wouldn’t bring it up and embarrass non-posh people (thereby negating their poshness). @SilkFloss showing her Hyacinth side there methinks.

idontlikealdi · 29/01/2024 13:16

One of my daughters can't burp, even though she wants to sometimes. She makes up for it with farting though.

I only really burp when I have indigestion which is often. I always say pardon, or excuse me.

It used to be my party trick to be able to burp the alphabet on demand.

HelpMeGetThrough · 29/01/2024 04:42

If I know a burp is coming, I'll burp the word "arse".

It's the little things that brighten up life.

Burp ribbit next time

I agree

Bookridden · 29/01/2024 20:05

I can't burp either! I think there is a website called "No burp". There is a physical reason. I'm very jealous of those who can burp.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 29/01/2024 20:10

Wow, thanks to this thread I have just learned that ds and I both have R-CPD Shock. That explains some other symptoms, so thanks @Shiningout !

palygold · 29/01/2024 20:16

SilkFloss · 28/01/2024 23:15

I think saying "pardon me"
Is worse than the burp.
"Excuse me" is fine.

Agree.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 29/01/2024 20:19

I say 'please excuse me' anyway, but I think I would certainly say it more than once for so many burps. Or eat more slowly. Or stop talking so much.

I would certainly never make any of the crass comments mentioned upthread.

Thebelcher · 14/01/2025 14:54

Does anyone here belch in public?

Sparxdislike · 14/01/2025 14:56

Yes even when I'm on my own out of habit 🙈 ingrained in me to say "pardon me" and "pardon"

That isn't normal! I've lived with many many different people in many shared houses and none of them do that. I'm pretty easygo but that's a bit bleugh.
