Do you say “pardon me”/“excuse me” after each individual burp?

Was talking about this earlier with DD after dinner and she burped and said “pardon” and didn’t for the next 4 consecutive burps. I personally say it again after multiple burps or if I can feel another one brewing I’ll wait until after that one. Is there a correct etiquette regarding this?

Burping 10-15 times after eating is NOT NORMAL.

Try eating more slowly, maybe. Or cut out fizzy drinks.

I think saying "pardon me"
Is worse than the burp.
"Excuse me" is fine.

Why?

DiscoBeat · 29/01/2024 00:32

Another one wondering what is wrong with 'pardon me'. I do burp, obviously, but there are ways of suppressing it/making it silent.

There would be no pardon me here. We don't really do that. Either do we burp multiple times at dinner though.

Giggorata · 29/01/2024 01:45

We don't use the phrase “pardon me” under any circumstances, as it is too refined.
Most involuntary bodily noises get ignored and if they are very loud, might elicit a “wow”.

Do people seriously not burp after a meal? Especially a large meal? I can burp 10-15 times after a large meal 🤣 I’d do it under my breath in public though.

You want to get yourself some gaviscon, love!

Genuinely posh people consider it a bit try-hard. Like saying serviette instead of napkin

Bambooshoot · 29/01/2024 03:13

I don’t burp. Shame, as I often get terrible indigestion! But I just don’t seem to have the ability. I would think lots of burping would mean some kind of digestive issue the other way.

sproutsandparsnips · 28/01/2024 22:48

I am unable to burp so am quite jealous. DH and DS on the other hand......

Me too! I've never met anyone else who can't burp! Do you know if threre is a reason for it?

I do sometimes do those kind of silent "hup!" things which take you by surprise and you make a daft face....but there's none of the "release" that comes with an actual burp. Also no burp taste.

Maybe once a year I'll do an actual burp. It's always when I'm bending down (putting shoes on or something) and speaking at the same time. Obviously something to do with the angle / pressure on the stomach or something.

Another non burper!

Thats three of us on the thread now....have never come across anyone else who can't burp before. How exciting.

RadioGaGaRadioGooGoo · 29/01/2024 04:27

I will say pardon me if I'm out with people who are not my family. If I'm at home and it's a long/loud one it's usually followed by 'did you hear that' like Buddy from Elf when he burps.
I burp a lot and can do it on demand as well

HelpMeGetThrough · 29/01/2024 04:42

If I know a burp is coming, I'll burp the word "arse".

It's the little things that brighten up life.

StrawberrySheryl · 29/01/2024 05:49

I burp if I have fizzy drinks, giant loud stinky ones. I wouldn't do it in company though.

There's a no burp reddit forum, come join us 😂

SallyWD · 29/01/2024 07:30

I read that burping is caused by air you swallow when you eat (this includes fizzy drinks which are full of gas). Farting is caused by the air produced further down your digestive system as your body breaks down the food.
So those who burp must be swallowing more air as they consume? Maybe eating with their mouths open. I don't know.
I don't think I've met anyone who burps 15 times after a meal.

Add another! I have GERD but I very, very rarely burp, and cannot make myself do it as some people seem to be able to.

OP, are you and your daughter swallowing a lot of air when you eat?

Shiningout · 29/01/2024 07:41

If you can't burp you probably have RCPD (to the non burpers)

hopeishere · 29/01/2024 07:42

I don't (can't??) burp either. I find it absolutely disgusting. My dad burped and DS and DH do revolting "performance" burps. I hate it.

ShiftySquirrel · 29/01/2024 07:43

I've never burped 15 times after anything in my life. Occasional burper here, only after fizzy drinks, and always say excuse me. I don't care what anyone else says though.

I can understand if you burp 15 times in a row it would get tedious saying pardon each time!
Maybe just after the last one?

And? If saying 'pardon me' has become customary among the working and middle classes then surely that's just a pleasant quirk or difference that we should be allowed to embrace. I was brought up with all kinds of aspirational pleasantries that I now know to be a bit naff/ class signifiers but whatever, I'm not here to ape the upper classes. I am not and never will be one of them, nor would I want to be.

Natsku · 29/01/2024 07:51

Depends how big a burp it is. If its very big and loud I usually say bloody hell, where did that come from?!

BeyondMyWits · 29/01/2024 07:51

I used to burp a lot as a child. Practically inhaled my food.

Ever since I left home and lived alone, I don't burp after eating as I slowed down - a lot.

Sometimes after fizzy drinks, but I generally can feel a burp building, so turn away and say "oh, sorry"

catelynjane · 29/01/2024 07:54

I'm generally not a burper but I can make myself burp - DH and I have been known to have competitions in the past Grin

I can control it though and would never do it in a restaurant or out in public.

Pacifybull · 29/01/2024 07:55

cardibach · 28/01/2024 22:31

How on Earth would you stop it? It’s an involuntary escape of air…

I never burp, I think. I think it’s very odd if you are burping. Are you eating too quickly?

😂😂😂no. That's so unusual. I always think my dh is a burper but now I'm thinking he's not really. He burps maybe once or twice a day. Usually when relaxed in the evening. I very very rarely burp. I think it has a lot to do with how we eat and drink. Some people swallow a lot of air. 10-15 times though!!!!!

I do fart a fair bit though 🫣
