How much do new windows cost these days?

Hello all,

Just going through the motions of buying a 3 bed house and need new windows, there are 9 in total, probably standard size, no weird shapes.

My mom said I will probably have to spend about £4k but I think that's definitely not enough to budget for....I've got a window person doing me a quote but can't get the estate agent to be there with the keys for another fortnight so just wanted a ball park figure to work with.

I also want a new front door but may have to leave that a bit...

Thanks

We were quoted around the £10-£12k mark for 11 windows and a front door.

Sothisiit · 29/01/2024 09:08

We got ours done by a local company for 8k. (3 bed victorian terrace - UPVC sash) The large national companies started at 18k and reduced down to 12k.
I'd go local, if you get the rough measurements you might get an estimate over the phone to give you a ball park figure.

zurala · 29/01/2024 09:11

We had ours done 8 years ago. Ten normal windows (including one with patterned frosted glass) a four,-panel bifold, patio doors and a glazed back door, all in a custom colour (which was 2k extra) and they were 20k.

3 new windows and 4m sliding doors cost us 8k a year ago. New front door was 2k.

Mindyour0wn · 29/01/2024 09:59

10 windows and 3 doors for 8.5k about a month ago. One of the window firms we had round quoted 18k.

Firsttimetrier · 29/01/2024 10:26

We currently having windows fitted as I type.

For our 3 bedroom house, we’re replacing a bay window and then 5 other windows, which is 8 in total.

We’re putting in sash UPVC and it’s costing £8,200. All quotes came back as £1000 per window, but we had to pay £200 for additional bay support.

I wish it was £4k! That seems like a pre-2020 quote when building costs and supply was much cheaper.

Firsttimetrier · 29/01/2024 10:28

Also to say, the £1000 per window didn’t change on the size.

gluenotsoup · 29/01/2024 10:34

We’re waiting for ours to be fitted in a couple of weeks. Almost 10k for 2 large square bays, 2 large stained glass picture windows, 3 flat windows and 1 round.

Thats about right for what I paid. Mine were £4700 for a 3 bed detached (1 bay, 2 large 3 pane windows, 4 medium 2 pane windows, 3 small single pane windows) and new front & back doors so without the doors would’ve been just over 4K x

Also, when buying the house we offered 5k lower than asking because of needing new windows etc 👍🏻

Cactusprick · 29/01/2024 10:48

We were quoted £7000 for 9 windows by Anglian last year. We said no. They called us a week later to say they could do us a “deal” and had managed to get it down to £4000 somehow…. I wouldn’t go with your first quote. Clearly they can adjust the price massively.

Ffs I wish I’d haggled that when I bought mine. Why didn’t I think of this?!

Oh no 🙈
And I agree with you about haggling. With everything I’ve done to the house, we’ve had multiple quotes that have not only ranged a lot but also companies have come back with better quotes than originally quoted!

StrawberryKick · 29/01/2024 11:17

Thanks everyone, some food for thought. I'll be getting 3 quotes and may be able to haggle as quite early in the process still.

My mom is definitely thinking pre 2020.

We had front door, 2 new patio doors and 6 windows, 7.5k in total (including VAT and a cat flap in the patio door glass). This was last year.

In 6 weeks we’re getting the new Conservatory roof done, and 4 more windows out there, 7.3K (including the plasterer).

oliviapsu · 29/01/2024 12:56

Are they pvc or wood? For pvc, if the glass is blown and needs replacing its only a couple hundred to replace the glass itself. Most people dont realise this abd think they need to replace the whole window. Watch a YouTube video it's surpringly easy.

afkonholidaynearleek · 29/01/2024 13:42

We were quoted £8,500 for 9 uPVC sash windows, and £21,000 for hardwood sash windows. This was about 18 months ago.

Newstarto · 29/01/2024 13:42

I paid about £15k for sash window double glazing, three bed house

Firsttimetrier · 29/01/2024 13:53

@cakeorwine they do it all from the inside! They then real outside by opening the window I think.

I’m surprised how long it actually takes to fit them. I thought they’d do our whole 3 bed house with 7 windows in a day, but it’s taken 4 days as it’s not as simple as popping out the window and sticking a new one in 😂

DemBonesDemBones · 29/01/2024 15:39

Listed building 6 beds 11 windows £22,500 Confused

JLM1981 · 29/01/2024 16:10

I paid £650 (fitted)for a large kitchen window with two top openers. Only the one needed replacing. It was straightforward swap and very quick.

Wow, our 3 bed was done by 3pm on the 2nd day!!!

MamPadi · 29/01/2024 17:31

Had ours done in 2022, 3 bed semi nothing unusual. Cost just over £5k which included a patio door (more like £4k without the patio!)

Keziagrace · 29/01/2024 18:10

go for a local company with good reputation . The big companies especially the one named after tallest mountain are overpriced and pain in the neck to work with

This.

We had a quote from one of the national companies and it was a joke. The price was off the scale then the rep said they would offer huge discounts if we gave good online reviews. We then pointed out that if that was the case then he couldn't really claim that all their good reviews were independent!

We went with a local firm and they have been great. Can't tell you how much as we've had a lot of work done and it's all been mixed in with what we have paid the builder.
