How much do new windows cost these days?

Hello all,

Just going through the motions of buying a 3 bed house and need new windows, there are 9 in total, probably standard size, no weird shapes.

My mom said I will probably have to spend about £4k but I think that's definitely not enough to budget for....I've got a window person doing me a quote but can't get the estate agent to be there with the keys for another fortnight so just wanted a ball park figure to work with.

I also want a new front door but may have to leave that a bit...

Thanks

3 bed semi up north - 6 double glazed windows with various openings chosen by me and 2 UPVC doors £4800 from a local company that came recommended. Front door is triple glazed I believe although I didn’t ask nor pay extra for it to be, however front door was slightly more than standard price as it’s almost a door and a half wide so has an extra glass panel at the side IFYSWIM. 4k may not be far off depending on area

We got a quote from a reputable will known company. The guy stayed over 2 hours measuring, pricing up, calling his colleague to see what deal could be done etc etc. Eventually we had to ask him to leave. The quote was about £17k. We were so traumatised it was a year before we started tentatively asking friends for advice. Everyone recommended the same local place, they came, measured, left and the quote arrived a couple of days later. £5k. And they did an excellent job.
Never underestimate the small business and the power of word of mouth!

Paid £4000 for 4 largish pvc windows in October last year

FuckKnowsMate · 28/01/2024 22:42

@cardibach may seem cheap, perhaps it’s area I’m in the North West and used a reputable local business for supply and fit. No complaints so far and they look great 😆

ItsdefnotmeItsyou · 28/01/2024 22:45

we paid £6300 for 9 windows and composite front door 5 years ago.

Lesleymumof3kids · 28/01/2024 23:23

When we had the windows done there was a nice guy from a company that sounds like a mountain in the Himalayas that we couldn't get rid off, made a ridiculous 1st quote then phoned his boss and reduced the price by half if we signed up there and then..,still more expensive than what we were previously quoted by local firms Get quotes from a couple of local firms 1st. Double or triple glazed ( not drastically more expensive)with blinds built in if wanting an unfussy window look were twice the price than standard double glazed. I wish they were an option when we got the windows done as they would be a godsend with kids and cats )We were 7 windows. 1 was toughened glass as 30 cm from floor on the stairs and less than £10K fitted for double glazed.

Flottie · 29/01/2024 05:24

I paid £700 for an average sized kitchen window a couple of years ago. That did also include knocking a bit of wall out as I wanted a bigger window than what was there. So 9 windows maybe £6000-£7000 ish.

motherofkevinnotperry · 29/01/2024 05:48

12 windows, french doors and front door was £12k 2 years ago. Grey was more expensive than white. We went for white

We’ve just put a deposit down on ours. £4k approx for 6 casement windows. I’d say get on trustpilot and find three companies to come and quote you. Our quotes varied wildly but when we let it be known that we were getting other quotes prices came down. The ‘offer‘ they can only do you on the day when you sign up right then and there usually isn’t the best offer they can do you. As the guys who come out tend to work on commission, they want you to pay the highest price, however commission on £0 is 0 so there is quite a lot of room for negotiation. Also, I’d choose a small business over big nationwide companies as they depend on positive reviews, so theoretically they will resolve any issues quickly. Safestyle customers were waiting upwards of 6 months for re attendance for poorly fitted or damaged windows.

TacaremboLaTumbaDelFuegoSantaMalipasZacatecas · 29/01/2024 06:32

Just to add, if you’re going to need the front door done in the near future, it’s best to get it done now if you can at all, as it will work out cheaper alongside the windows rather than paying for it as a standalone with a separate ‘base fee’.

GettingBetter2024 · 29/01/2024 06:35

😬😬. WOW this is so much money. How long do windows last?

We will not be able to afford to replace ours 😬😬

ChaoticBag · 29/01/2024 06:37

Was quoted £6,500 for 2 bay windows recently, local trusted firm in SE.
Not happening any time soon 😂

Ilovemyshed · 29/01/2024 06:41

14 windows, large roof lantern, large 4m doors, front and back door, two other french doors £21k. Decent Rehau flush casements.

JustMyView13 · 29/01/2024 06:49

It depends somewhat on how close to London you are but £8-10k for windows and a further £2/2.5k for a nice composite door (again impacted by side windows if there are any). It depends how bad the windows are, we done the back one year, and the front the next which helped spread the cost.

GladiatoooorsReadyyyy · 29/01/2024 07:22

We’ve been quoted £8k for 9 windows and a front door, that’s the same from two different companies

Lisbeth50 · 29/01/2024 07:32

I'd say about £700 per window. More if it's large or a bay window or has several parts that open.

Dogstar78 · 29/01/2024 08:05

We wanted to replace one bay window (square, not rounded), about 2.8m wide on the main panel with one section for fire exit and two fan lights in the other panel quote was about 2.5/3k with fitting. That was last summer. Thought I'd post in case you had any 'non-standard' shaped windows. It was going to ha e to be specially made.

NotDeliciouslyElla · 29/01/2024 08:06

Is triple glazing offered as standard these days?

Has anyone gone from double to triple, just wondering what the benefits would be, would they keep your house cooler in the summer?

Ours will need replacing in next few years.

BarrelOfOtters · 29/01/2024 08:07

Just been quoted 10k for 3 huge bay windows, and 2 wide other windows, heritage style.

WhollyGlorious · 29/01/2024 08:08

£8k for 12 (two were really big) and different colour indoors and outdoors 18 months ago.

Elmeux · 29/01/2024 08:18

2 years ago I had 14 windows replaced and a new front door. We chose coloured flush fit/casement windows and it came to £11k, which I thought was reasonable.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 29/01/2024 08:23

I had new double patio doors put in three years ago, £1,500. Also the glass unit in one door replaced because it had leached, a mere £100. The guy just popped the old glass out and pushed the new unit in.

Notoriety · 29/01/2024 08:33

New ones being fitted next week, house 25 years old all windows larger than average. 10 Rehaus casement windows - £6600

whatthedickens5 · 29/01/2024 08:38

We were extremely lucky when we replaced ours 3 years ago. My italian builder knew the owner of a double glazing factory 3 hours away. We replaced 5 windows (1 large bay) and 1 back door for £1500 plus £300 installation cost. For the South East it was a steal :)
