How much do new windows cost these days?

Hello all,

Just going through the motions of buying a 3 bed house and need new windows, there are 9 in total, probably standard size, no weird shapes.

My mom said I will probably have to spend about £4k but I think that's definitely not enough to budget for....I've got a window person doing me a quote but can't get the estate agent to be there with the keys for another fortnight so just wanted a ball park figure to work with.

I also want a new front door but may have to leave that a bit...

Thanks

We had ours replaced last summer. Total was just under £6500. That included 6 windows, patio doors and a front door. We got three quotes and the others were a couple of thousand more. beware of companies that will quote you a higher figure, then offer to give you a discount if you sign up to it today.

£1500 for one large (but not ridiculous, just a townhouse) lounge window.

Augustus40 · 26/01/2024 11:03

I paid c £6,500 2 years ago. 6 double glazed windows.

Doors are pricey so could not justify it.

About £5/6k any less and I'd be very wary.

Ginandjuice57884 · 28/01/2024 20:45

Upwards of 6 grand I'd think.

Brownie975 · 28/01/2024 20:50

I paid about £450 for a large picture UPVC window with one opener.

I also had some sliding sash windows replaced at the same time and they were much more expensive, just over £1100 each (still upvc but top of the range)

seasaltbarbie · 28/01/2024 21:02

I got quoted £8000 for 8 windows, a front door and a back door

Throwawayme · 28/01/2024 21:04

I'm think 4k estimate is on the low side unfortunately. I paid over 3k 15 years ago for a one bed flat.

cardibach · 28/01/2024 21:04

I have a quote for £6300 for 5 large (would have been sash) windows. That includes making them look like sash still and having fire exit tilts in the upstairs ones. And new sills.

OhMehGoddess · 28/01/2024 21:09

4k is def very low. We were 3.5k just for 11 windows. DH put them in so no fitting cost.

Doors are separate we got a miss measure from his work and paid 150 for it, but they are upwards of 600 ish just for a door no fitting.

MrsBunTheBakersMum · 28/01/2024 21:09

We had new windows two days ago, I didn’t choose them, particularly want them or pay for them but the landlord decided it was a good idea so we just let him because it’s his house really.
we had a peek at the invoice and for two big front windows, a big kitchen window a medium bathroom window (it’s pretty big for a bathroom) a medium bedroom window and a new back door, all super stylish dark grey (we only recently got a new front door) so one door and five windows was £3.5k I was stunned! I wouldn’t have done them lol most of them had condensation inside but it saved on net curtains (I’m really tight though and it’s nice that the landlord gives a crap, the heating element blew in the oven on Christmas Day and by new year we had a new oven and a lot of apologies, we were out most of Christmas and have an air fryer so it was fine)

ColourByNumbers88 · 28/01/2024 21:14

I'd say around 500 per window for uPVC tilt and turn or 1200 for sash and case.

cakeorwine · 28/01/2024 21:36

Silly question - but how do they fit them upstairs?
Do they need scaffolding - or just 2 ladders and someone inside?

inappropriateportioncontrol · 28/01/2024 21:44

I had upstairs window done - UVPC- side hung casement, quite small,£600 .
They did it from inside.

FuckKnowsMate · 28/01/2024 21:47

I had 6 new windows (one being a smaller bathroom window size), front and back door fitted a couple of months ago and paid 4.5k. Also choose a style where I had to pay a bit more for the ‘horns’ on the front windows.

HalloumiGeller · 28/01/2024 21:57

It depends not only on how many windows you need, but also the quality of the product, as not all windows and doors are the same!

We replaced 7 windows and 2 doors in 2022 and it cost £11k, the cheapest quote was 10k.

AndyPandyismyhero · 28/01/2024 22:00

We had new windows last spring. 3 bed house. 2 bay windows, largish window in bathroom, small bedroom, kitchen window and door, french doors and side windows either side. Also new front door and side panels. Only 'extravagance' were the fanlights as I wanted something that fitted the style of the house, but they only added a couple of hundred to the cost. Total, for all windows, doors and the fitting, was £12000. This was with a small, local company. Considering my friend a few doors away paid more than double for the same number and size windows to a large, national company a couple of months earlier, we felt ours was a bargain. We had three quotes, all from local companies, all within about £500 if each other.

GobletSquats · 28/01/2024 22:02

We replaced 7 windows (2 of which are very big) and the back door in May last year. Got 3 quotes which varied wildly. The highest was £22k! We went with the lowest which came in at £5K.

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 28/01/2024 22:08

We had the house done a fortnight ago. Thirteen windows, one ordinary door and sliding patio doors, £12K
cakeorwine they fitted them from inside then just used a ladder to seal around them outside.

I had a quote from what I thought was a reputable local firm but it seems they may have been exaggerating the costs needed - and how they would fit them.

user1471530109 · 28/01/2024 22:12

I think mine was around £8k (maybe a bit more actually) just under a year ago.

9 windows. 1 french doors. 1 back door (all uPVC but front of house in agate grey-the greeny grey colour). Then a composite front door.

AndyPandyismyhero · 28/01/2024 22:14

Tried to edit my message but wouldn't let me.
I wanted to add, there are different quality windows - ours are rated A+ but you can get lower, but still adequate quality which I imagine will cost less.

This sounds very cheap indeed. I googled what to expect when I got my quote and £6300 for 5 (all large) seemed to be right in t(e middle of what was reasonable. Doors are usually over £1k on their own.

Neverpostagain · 28/01/2024 22:16

One year ago £7000 for 12 windows and 2 patio doors

Oblomov23 · 28/01/2024 22:19

£4k? Dream on! £7k for an average house.
