I’m not sure about the coercive control, although that maybe something her lawyers push. I just don’t see the power dynamics in his favour other than him being a man. She had the money, the wealthy contacts, the education and no doubt her family would have helped her. She went a mother and baby unit they would have helped her leave then if she wanted it. He had none of this, not even basic education, he couldn’t even drive.

If she was as together, capable, empowered as your post suggests she was, what was she doing with the uneducated, ex convict, broke MG? Why would she have started a relationship with him? The fact that she had access to money (and that only seems to be a recent thing from what I understand, when her trust fund started paying out) and could have had support to leave him doesn't negate the likelihood of coercive control at all. In fact it seems more likely! She could have left him but she didn't. She was vulnerable, he was manipulative, is my theory. Remember she spent time in a cult before she met him. She was not a stable, capable person when she started this relationship and is even less so now.

It will be interesting to see what case her lawyers will make. I assume her family is paying for some top notch lawyers.

CM still seems completely besotted by MG.

@placemats that's really interesting, can you tell me where you got that info from? Thanks xxx

RowanMayfair, if she cared about her children she would have left him, she had the money and family and support to do so, she chose to stay with him even though he would never be able to parent because she wanted to and her children weren’t her priority. Tbh I do not understand what she saw in him but they seem to have something in common.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 03/03/2024 16:18

Thanks, I was reading that article about Andrew Bridgen this morning. The way he treated his wife and children was appalling. He seemed to just stop caring about his children as everything was driven by his belief system. Cult-like thinking really does destroy everything and everyone around you, almost as if the individual is in a permanent state of psychosis.

placemats · 03/03/2024 16:37

They had one child together.

Bridgen is an extremely wealthy man.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 03/03/2024 16:53

Yes, sorry - they had one son.

So MG has decided at the last minute not to give evidence causing further delays to the trial now adjourned until Wednesday.

???? - not entirely sure what you mean?

Obviously if they had known earlier that he was not going to give evidence then the defence could have scheduled other witnesses for today and tomorrow.

It's not caused a delay though as the time was allotted to his evidence.

Of course he's getting legal aid. It's never a waste of tax payer's money to provide legal representation to people, even when they are guilty.

Legal Aid does not go to the defendant but to their defence team. The right to a defence is fundamental to the pursuit of justice.

anothernamitynamenamechange · 07/03/2024 12:06

There are ddefinately many women who are victims of coercive cotrol.
There are also women who, for their own reasons, will voluntarily prioritise their man over everything else - themselves and their children.

I know which group I would put CM into. Hence the bleating when they were arrested about "he's hungry, he's hungry, stop hurting him"

GrandKarber · 07/03/2024 16:29

It’s so desperately sad. Yet there seems to be some very strange rigid thinking from CM - the refusing to take a Covid test which in effect meant she couldn’t get her newborn back. Most post partum women would gnaw off their own limbs to get back to their new baby.

Sonora25 · 07/03/2024 16:42

Mr Fitzgibbon said: "At the start of this trial it was said that you put your own interests above your children's?"
Marten said: "No. there is literally nothing I wouldn’t do for my children."

clearly she drew the line at taking a covid test

Just seen tv clip. She and he are indoors, clqad in hefty winter jackets. She is putting baby, in just a babygro, no blanket or covering, into a pushchair. Love is not enough. Food, shelter, warmth and safety are the least any child should expect. Our children don't ask to join us. We bring them.
