Tesco = Have you noted this trick about eggs??

Call me cynical, but for the last few months, you are hard pushed to by a pack of 12 eggs online of any size.

All you have is 6 egg boxes which cost a lot more if you want 12, etc.

We shop online Tesco's but also go out to Icelands/Morrisons and Aldi's and they appear to have boxes of 12 galore, free range/etc/etc. Though there is no large Tesco near us, is this an online thing only and have you experienced this?

No, it's in store too. Boxes of 6 relatively reliable, boxes of 12 like hen's teeth. Pun intended. I can get a tray of 20 or 24 easy, but not 12.

I shop in a huge physical Tesco and just in the last year or so their egg displays are often half empty, and you may have to buy six-packs instead of 12, large instead of medium, etc, etc. Or, at worst, you may have to buy some of the wanky expensive weirdy blue or speckled eggs from old-Etonian chickens or whatever.
The egg supply chain seems fucked, basically. Avian flu? Brexit? The apocalypse? Probably one or more of those.

In our Tesco, we can easily get boxes of 6 free range eggs. They do boxes of 10 and also boxes of 15 but those are battery hens.

Yes, battery eggs and other non-free range seem to be relatively available. But if you want to avoid those you are a bit skewered.

If you have a butcher nearby, ask them about eggs. Ours sell trays of 30 free range eggs for the same price or cheaper than the supermarket battery eggs, they last weeks and taste nicer as well.

It may not be deliberately cynical way of making money but if people who want to buy 12 eggs keep buying 2 packs of 6, then the stock tracking systems they use will just keeping thinking that 6 packs are the more popular option.

I find that sometimes they have 12 packs sometimes they don’t, but I haven’t noticed any pattern.

I barely find 12 packs of free range eggs in tesco. Have been buying the 10 pack of non tesco branded ones and they are white! Got a pack of 12 in Morrison's instead today.

My Tesco (a huge Tesco extra) no longer stocks the 12 packs of Tesco free range eggs. It’s shame because I bought 2 most weeks. I think it likely is a financial decision.

There's only packs of 6 jn my Tescos. Also, I'm not sure if it's just my perception but the eggs seem to be getting smaller and smaller.

I usually buy medium size but they look tiny now. There's a box of mixed sizes suddenly available at a lower price. Mixed size appears to he mainly very tiny with 1 or 2 just tiny.

Where have all the larger eggs gone?

Our local garden centre sells eggs, and fruit & veg. If you have a non-chain one near you maybe they sell them.

I just bought chickens instead 🤣. I used to get boxes of 15 from Sainsbury’s. Have they stopped those!

Check if you have a local egg person. We get a tray of 30 delivered every fortnight.

I have a weekly Tesco delivery and have noticed this, I have to buy free range in boxes of 6, and have done for about 4 months. I bought 4 boxes of 6 today and they're all white, the shells are really thin and fragile, so I end up with bits of shell in the pan/bowl. I hadn't thought of buying from the butcher, so I'll do that in future.

I read somewhere (i'll see if I can find the link) there is a huge supply issue. They've also had to stock more white eggs because of this, so many people have been surprised by that too.

I've heard that the supply issue has been caused by the supermarkets not being prepared to pay the farmers enough up cover the rising cost of feed etc so farmers are not making money so no point in maintaining poultry flocks.

It's coz of the egg shortage. They want people to just buy 6 rather than 12 at a time

Huh. Just listened to a month-old podcast about how Russia is currently going through egg shortages and it's causing near-riots in some places. Didn't realize rhe phenomenon had spread more widely 😁😁😁

FWIW the explanation for Russia was cost of living issues - specifically, consumers switching from more expensive forms of protein (i.e. meat) to eggs.

I haven't noticed this but I did notice that 2 x M&S's 6-pack are cheaper than buying their dozen.

As I said - Morrisons/Ice and Aldi have the large and the mid-sized free range ones in 12 packs

We used to buy Tesco own brand 12 large and or would settle for mid-size from another supplier to Tesco - then you could hardly get the 12 packs from any supplier at Tesco's

A few months ago we tried the 15 pack free range, mixed but were mainly small and mid, that too has gone

The other stores seem to have them, so not sure why not Tesco's - it all adds up

We often bulk buy on-offer stuff and thankfully have the space and money to store it - otherwise, our shopping bill would be even higher

I'd like the press to pick up this thread and ask why Tesco is reluctant to do 12 packs - I'm sure they will say as one member here stated - 'markets demand' dictate

If anyone from the Guardian newspaper is reading this thread, please investigate!

You realise free range eggs bought in a supermarket just means there’s no cages inside the barn right?

Buy from independents or better still get a few chickens.

eggs usually come in 10 & 6 packs of varius sizes.

since last summer only 6 packs of 'mixed' weights are available.
and they cost 4.5€ for organic ones.

None in tescos but sainsburys and Aldi often have them.
