I'll be visiting for the first time this weekend - what do you always get from there? What is good food-wise? Thanks!

The hot chickens / ribs are amazing! The cookies, cakes, breakfast pastries, cronuts etc are all delicious. It's a bargain if you need things in bulk! The fresh meat is great and good value, better than supermarket meat (although my local butchers just pips it to the winning spot). Great for random giant tubs of sweets too!

Meat is a good buy, especially if you have a freezer/bags, then you can split it down into enough for meals. I do this regularly. I always have chicken, steak mince or a joint to hand for a meal. I find the bakery items good too. I buy the bagels and freeze them, then take a couple out for the next day.
There are a few savings to be had. But then I suppose it depends on your budget, family size, needs at the time you visit.
But I'd definitely recommend those. I'd avoid the Kirkland ready made meals at the fresh counter though, I've had a couple and they're plain nasty! The ribs and rotisserie chicken are lovely and hubby likes the burritos.
Enjoy your visit! x

We’ve been going to Costco for years and number 1 tip is to know in advance what items usually cost - it isn’t always cheaper in bulk.

We usually buy meat (better quality than supermarket but not usually cheaper), toilet paper & kitchen towels, cleaning products, Comfort, Persil, Marmite & peanut butter, squash, cereal/porridge, cheddar cheese, butter, spreadable butter, Heinz baked beans, canned tuna, pasta, sometimes toothpaste packs, batteries.

They also do good variety of children’s book packs for all ages as well as adults books; I’ve bought Skechers shoes and DH has got Levi jeans. DC once had a fireman fancy dress costume from there which got countless compliments and asking where we got it from.

The cakes and made-to-order celebration cakes are great too. We’ve bought their ready made meals a few times ie pizzas, cottage pie and Mexican chicken wraps which are all good and freshly made. The platters and bakery platters are great for catering.

We buy rotisserie chicken, pet supplies (food litter etc), toilet rolls, butter, fabric conditioner, maple syrup, bonne maman jam, breakfast cereal, sourdough baguettes, avocados. Have also bought random items at times - Levi jeans, plates, DIY stuff, AirPods, food processor, massive teddy bear....

OneHourParking · 23/01/2024 20:06

Do they do sandwich platters / party food?

Stupidgullet · 23/01/2024 20:17

Mayonnaise. DH practically drinks the stuff so supermarket sizes just do t last at all

We go at least every 4 weeks we like their Kirkland loo rolls and kitchen roll , large packs of salmon fillets , haddock fillets ( these I repack into portions when I get home and freeze) . Bottled water is very cheap , Jordan’s nut cereal and Quaker porridge sachets . There is usually a bargain or two in the middle aisle . Not everything is cheaper but it’s good quality .

DyslexicPoster · 23/01/2024 21:06

There own brand washing liquid but sure if they still do it?
Cakes, all of them.
Pizzas that are too big for the oven.
The cafe.
Cheese.
Mmmmmmm......

indignatio · 23/01/2024 21:27

The tin foil would be a recommendation, but DH hates (so doesn't) use it, as the quality is too high. Apparently you could mend aeroplanes with it

pickledandpuzzled · 23/01/2024 21:31

Why can’t I have a card?!

Yes, I did all the party food for a class party from there - sarnies, sausage rolls, cookies, mini pastries; plus personalised cake - pre order it all online then just turn up and collect it on the day you select.
It was all very very popular- I’ve never had so little waste 😂

DeltaCity01 · 23/01/2024 21:37

ive gotten 2 trays of those big muffins, couple of trays of the cheese slices

Ponderingtosk · 23/01/2024 21:37

Tin foil
zip lock bags
Chocolate chips (use in biscuits, choc cake and for the most fabulous ganache, which when warm is gorgeously scrumptious).

buidhe · 23/01/2024 21:39

@pickledandpuzzled are you really sure you can't have a card? If you don't qualify ask someone you know who does to join with you and nominate you as the extra cardholder.

pickledandpuzzled · 23/01/2024 21:45

Good plan, thanks. I didn’t think I qualified, though I would have in the past.

pickledandpuzzled · 23/01/2024 21:47

doh. Think I should have an old payslip. Thanks for making me look twice!

BrightNewLife · 23/01/2024 21:51

Love Costco!

I’d say it depends what you like and if you have space.

I am a single parent of 3 teens so I’m always looking for good prices & quantity.
I roughly know the range of many supermarket prices so I can gauge what is good value for me. It’s not cheaper than Lidl or Aldi, but the quality is really good (especially fruit & veg which is catering/restaurant quality).

Personally, these things work out cheaper:
cereal bars
large tubs peanut butter
large jams
large bags pasta
Very large bottles soy sauce
large boxes of noodles
loo rolls
large tubs prawns
large tubs hummus etc
6-packs soya milk
cleaning products work out cheaper

Their large fresh trays of sushi are amazing!

Note - watch out for the With/Without VAT prices (some look “cheaper) but it’s because the VAT isn’t displayed.

If you have a full trolley it will easily cost double a supermarket shop, so be prepared for more of an outlay initially, eg in the £250/£300 range.

TheChosenTwo · 23/01/2024 21:52

We had membership for about 10 years, we’ve probably been 5 times and have hardly ever bought anything 😂
I just don’t think it really suits our family.
Each time I’ve been I get a trolley in anticipation and leave with a token item.
It’s a shame as I always want to leave with loads of good stuff but then I remember we don’t have the American style basement storage or an overly large family!! I don’t want to store bulk loads of anything - and then I’m disappointed leaving with nothing 😂😂
I did once get a very nice Christmassy cinnamon candle though!
