TV shows as a child that freaked you out

Just thought I would start a threat for fun, I was trying to describe this particular show to my partner and he had no idea what I was talking about but after much researching I found out it was Wizbit, which was played by Paul Daniels. The yellow hat and the rabbit honestly freaked me out. For context I'm 33 so this was early 90s it must have been on..anyone got any shows that still give them the ick as an adult?

I don't even know what the show was, this would have been around early 1980s, I just remember being absolutely terrified by a programme that had figures like humans but all wrapped in raggedy bandages and emerging from a windmill. That's how I remember it anyway, very vague but the fear was very real!
Sort of wish I knew what it was so I could rewatch it now,

Those of a certain age will remember.
Those bloody government adverts from the 70s! Terrifying stuff. There was always a cheerful cockney kid about to be electrocuted , drowned, abducted, squashed, mown down, it went on and on. The chip fat fire adverts were the worst, I used to watch ours intently with a damp tea towel at the ready.

Round the twist had an episode where the water going down the plughole made like a twister and sucked people in from the bath or something. I hated seeing the water going down the plughole after that!

The Moomins...in particular the one with little My under a bridge

I wasn't sure about the Moomins as a child and Little My always scared me but having read the books, I love them now as does our whole household. The world of wonderful (and yes a bit weird) characters and the welcoming Moomin family.

And Worzel Gummidge I adored, it was my favourite programme.
Rentaghost was definitely a bit odd.

The Singing Ringing Tree - TV series from East Germany. I bought the DVD on a trip to Berlin a few years ago to see whether it was really as scary as I rembered - it was.

Beat me to it! The Singing Ringing Tree was creepy and sinister 😱
Children of the Stones was a bit scary too:

Children Of The Stones Theme

Digitally enhanced theme of probably THE best kids programme ever made, well this and 'Escape Into Night' ( Oddly enough, both contain mysterious stones ).Th...

Monkey was awesome, absolutely batshit, but brilliant.

DogsAreBetterThanHusbands · 22/01/2024 22:19

Return to Oz... the Wheelers were so scary!

The Demon Headmaster

The Watcher in the Woods

Not aimed at children but I watched when I was about 10, Ghost Watch, with Sarah Green. So bloody scary!!

Agree with pp about The Singing Ringing Tree. It terrified me.

Also I used to find Catweazle rather disturbing. I think it was supposed to be funny, but I wasn't getting the joke!

Me too, with both of those.

My DB was absolutely terrified of Grotbags! So much so that his little sister (6 years younger than him!) wasn't allowed to watch it!

porridgeisbae · 22/01/2024 22:22

Not a series but the original Watership Down film, obvs. It's awful! Who wants to see animals dying horribly :(

WooWooWinnie · 22/01/2024 22:22

Yes - Round The Twist! So creepy!

Also Elidor. Think it was just a one series adaption, but it was scary!

How can the light that burned so brightly
Suddenly burn so pale?

Lift-Off was very scary- it was an Aussie show in the 90s featuring terrifying backpacks with faces and a faceless doll.

Another vote for Orm and Cheep, that crow gave me nightmares. I also thought the children in Knightmare really died when the lost and was so bewildered that anyone would ever want to be on it!

My mum used to like watching Stingray and that absolutely terrified me, the puppets actually made me feel ill.

BreakfastAtMilliways · 22/01/2024 22:26

Herbie used to scare me as a kid. I used to have nightmares about being a passenger in a car driving itself.

To be fair the book of Watership Down is pretty scary stuff as well. Thinking of the blow by blow description of the destruction of Sandleford warren - definite shades of the Holocaust there…😨

MrsDoubtfire123 · 22/01/2024 22:27

The rotten trolls … absolutely terrifying! 😱

dontdillydallytoolong · 22/01/2024 22:27

Doctor Who…absolutely petrified and The Wizard of Oz…the Wicked Witch 😱

Phineyj · 22/01/2024 22:30

How has no-one mentioned The Tripods?!

Argh!!! Still can't look at a pylon without wincing.

rentaghost - especially the jester who use to sit crossed legged

some of the series they’d show at school (tv shows made especially for education? I think - don’t recall them ever being on any other time). One was set in a castle. Can’t recall names - but gives me the shivers now. Probably mid 1980s?

Dark Towers? Terrified me with the dark knight.
