Do you look your age ?

Not wishing to brag, but I often feel I could pass for 5 - 10 years younger. I've never asked anybody this question and I'm purely using the judgement of my own eyes. If I go back in time 39 years to when my late Dad was the same age as I am now (53), I see a man in early middle age with a full head of black hair - some greying - but a rather lined face and seemingly expanding ears! I, on the other hand, have a lot more grey hair than he did but a much denser texture and no obvious facial lines. I've always had bags under my eyes but not Peter Woods proportions! My sister is 61 but she could pass for late 40s, in my opinion.

Maybe there's no right or right or wrong answer. I could have a skewed personal perception or perhaps we're all living longer and I'm seeing that played out at close quarters.

PS. The old man had, along with Mum, raised seven children by the time he was my age whereas I have no children. So, no parental stress!

I am 38. I still look 18. I absolutely hate it.

lljkk · 22/01/2024 22:57

In my face, +10 years at least.
In my body, I like to think -10 years at least :)

Fantasies are nice to hold onto :)

Honestly I believe hardly anyone ever looks more than 3 or at most 5 years younger than they really are; not if people are looking properly. That’s not to say that with the right make up, clothes and in the right light, a person can’t pass for a decade younger on occasion to the “right” audience. But that’s not the same thing as actually looking 10 years younger.

Like a PP I meet lots of people professionally, and I almost always know their ages in advance. I’ve yet to meet anyone in 27 years who truly looked more than a couple of years younger than their age. Most look their age or older!

Pretty much what I was saying. I know a few women who are 47-51 years old, but look like 34-35 years old - from 30 feet away ... But they look older close up.

EG I know a particular stylish and attractive hairdresser who is 49. But even though she looks mid 30s from a distance, the closer you get the older she looks. It's in the neck and around the eyes and a bit around the jowls. She looks nice, and is attractive, and dresses well, and has lovely styled highlighted hair, and as I say she does look 34-35 from a bit of a distance.

But close up, she looks at LEAST 45. Genuinely. I think that's what happens with some people who say 'hey I am 43 and was IDd for booze.' If you WERE it's because you are dressed young, and from a few feet away - and at first glance - your age was not apparent. You may have looked mid 20s to start with, but close up you DO look around 40.

changedusernameforthis1 · 22/01/2024 22:58

No. I'm early thirties and have got to the stage where I never get asked for ID anymore but also get "You're never over thirty! Really?" every now and again too.

Lavenderandbrown · 22/01/2024 23:01

I think I look younger than my age but not more than 5 years. People guess my age younger or seem surprised by my age. I caution myself tho because my longest friend also thinks “we” look young for our age and I think she absolutely does not look young for age. I am slender and always have been. I stopped sunning my face in 1982. Stopped Sunning neck and chest in 2000. Have very nice skin. Wear fashionable clothes. I had adult orthodontia. Nonsmoking very little alcohol. I do think my mouth area is aging more than my eyes and forehead. I have an active job so I may appear more youthful in motion. I did let my hair go grey so while not aging in itself I don’t think anyone is going to guess 48 with this head of grey hair altho it’s very healthy looking hair. I do think aging happens in the morning….one morning I woke up and I thought hmmmmwhen did my jaw line change??? Aging happens in clumps one day you just look older than you did before

Pointless circular question. You are the age you are, therefore your age looks like you do.

This. I don't understand this whole looking an age thing. If someone is 50 then that's what 50 looks like. There is such enormous variation so I think it's ridiculous to say someone looks young or old for a particular age.

bakewellbride · 22/01/2024 20:13

I'm 34 and think I look perhaps a few years younger but I'm incredibly boring and haven't touched a drop of alcohol in 7 years!

Alcohol and how boring a person is are unconnected

MissTrip82 · 22/01/2024 20:16

Probably, almost everybody does.

In nearly two decades of meeting thousands of strangers whose ages I know for professional reasons, I’ve not once seen anyone who looks ten years younger than they are. Not once. Not ever.

Its never occurred to me than when people say they’re surprised at how old you are
or that you look younger that they’re being anything other than polite. Mumsnet however is full of 75 year olds without a single wrinkle.

I've had people double take when they are looking at my date of birth and have been asked to clarify on a few occasions. There is frequently confusion about the relationship when I am with my adult dc as people find it hard to believe I am their mother. But I still stick to my view that I am 57 so this is what 57 looks like. Someone else might look older. Then that's also what 57 looks like.

DustyMaiden · 22/01/2024 23:08

@WhamBamThankU the photos below are my sister, she’s younger and granddaughter.
And yes I did think I looked younger that I thought I would on my 60th. But it’s really not important

sleepysleepytired · 22/01/2024 23:09

I look a bit younger than I am but only by a few years. I'm 39. I don't think drinking alcohol makes a difference unless you're drinking daily. I find I look no younger or older if I'm unwell or stressed either.

SweetBirdsong · 22/01/2024 23:15

How old do you think you look @DustyMaiden ?

Moier · 22/01/2024 23:16

@sqsqcrispsal
Think you need specsavers.. she certainly doesn't look that old at all..
We just knew when people started posting photos.. they would be some very unkind remarks..

redheadsaregreat · 22/01/2024 23:17

@WhamBamThankU Why ask about a 4 year old photo 🙄

Because she can still say what age she was then relative to what people thinks she looked. Thats hardly difficult to figure out.

Anyway she did exactly that. She revealed how old she was in the photo

TheChosenTwo · 22/01/2024 23:17

@DustyMaiden i thought you were mid 40’s in that photo. Never would I have believed you were closer to 60!! I think you look bloody great 😂

I think I look a few years older than I am - darn kids!

SweetBirdsong · 22/01/2024 23:19

Here we go................ 🙄

HateItWhenABitchLetsHimselfSlide · 22/01/2024 23:19

Depends really. When I'm tired (so have horrid dark circles under my eyes), no makeup and my roots need doing (roots are completely grey) I look every single one of my 45 years, probably a bit older actually. When my roots are done, a bit of light makeup and I've slept well I can probably pass for late 30s - early 40s.

My DH is a jammy bugger, he's almost 50 and looks early 40s with a scraggly beard and long hair. When he gets a haircut and is clean-shaven he can easily pass for early to mid-30s.

sleepysleepytired · 22/01/2024 23:20

@DustyMaiden I'd have said early 50s at most.

HardcoreLadyType · 22/01/2024 23:22

I’m 55. People are often surprised when I tell them how old my children are, or how old I am. I don’t think I look young, either in the mirror or in photos - I certainly have plenty of wrinkles! - but maybe I have a young face?

FartingAgainstThunder · 22/01/2024 23:23

Last year I was 43 and looked about 36 I was told.
Then my dad died and the grief/depression has aged me by at least 10 years.
I'm hoping to start looking after myself better soon as I am feeling better (as good as I can feel anyway) but I don't know if I'll ever again look younger than I am.
I'm okay with that.

DustyMaiden · 22/01/2024 23:26

Thanks for the compliments, it does seem to be a contentious subject.

SweetBirdsong · 22/01/2024 22:39

It's really not that unusual to get IDd for booze and redbull at 30-31. 🙄 People have to look over 25 to be sold it. That just means you could pass for mid 20s at first glance. Most people have a tale to tell about being ID'd for booze/redbull up to around 32-33.

Ironically that stuff ages you, with all those chemicals in the drink. 😂

Andthereyougo · 22/01/2024 23:32

Yes. And I don’t care.

Yep, you do need to drink every day for booze to have an affect.

midnights0 · 22/01/2024 23:41

I'm 27 but in work the other day a customer asked me if I'd turned 18 yet 😂 I don't think I look that young but that was nice. I usually get ID'd for things but not when I'm with DH as he's 40, big beard and that 😂
