I’ve taken the liberty again.

Old thread here..

I think this from Marina Purkiss really nails it as far as Sunak

In my opinion...

Sunak's poor judgement time & time again comes down to one key thing:

Incredibly-low emotional intelligence

No self-awareness

No empathy

Awful social skills

...which is the result, for so many in power, of an emotionally stunted & sheltered upbringing.

Notonthestairs · 08/02/2024 13:31

"and there was me thinking they were swotting up on crib notes containing mostly figures and bullet pointed facts. Also gives some insight into why Rishi gives summits and other international leaders a wide berth. He can’t converse."

Yes it's interesting to note how scripted Sunaks responses are and how little he's able to pivot from them when circumstances require change.

That said the fact that the notes weren't altered or updated shows to me that they wanted this outcome and believe it serves their wider purposes.

I read this on Twitter and thought it rang true -

In fact, a culture war is not DESIGNED to be victimless. The whole point is to deliberately create an environment of hostility, anger, and tribalism. Such emotions naturally lead to vulnerable people suffering - because those emotions need targets.

This dehumanising of the vulnerable is not a bug, it is a feature. When a politician in a position of power deploys words to this effect, they are punching down on the vulnerable. Deliberately.

Thanks for sharing that. I agree with her. It explains a lot about a range of Tories.

Amazing thread, thanks for sharing

To be fair to Penny Mordaunt, I think she has gone as close that she can to saying Sunak should apologise.

All the more extreme GC lot were predicting this would be forgotten today. It is not going away.

Notonthestairs · 08/02/2024 13:59

"All the more extreme GC lot were predicting this would be forgotten today. It is not going away."

I suspect Sunak suggesting he could bring Johnson back into fold is designed to soak up some attention and deflect from Sunak's crass behaviour this week.

It's BS anyway of course. Johnson won't want to hitch his wagon whilst the Tories are in free fall. But I'm sure the right media people will get excited.

tobee · 08/02/2024 14:13

So, those who prep Sunak for PMQ, are they just now

a) the absolute dregs that Sunak has left to choose from?

or

b) deliberately sabotaging him?

pointythings · 08/02/2024 14:23

@tobee , I'm thinking it's both.

Roussette · 08/02/2024 14:25

@Notonthestairs

That thread you linked by Tom Bacon is spot on.

I’m not sure it’s either. They, not unreasonably, expect the PM to have enough political nouse to tailor the material he’s given to the situation. Instead this complete idiot just reads it without it passing through his brain. I can’t wait to see what happens to him in leaders’ debates when he needs to think on his feet.

Agree that Tom Bacon nails it.

Did Su-bot's programmers forget to completely turn the Smirk App off for this interview? Or is it that the Sincere App needs tweaking?

He is robotic.

And he is the worst of politics. Incapable of answering a question. Maybe he doesn't get it

TheABC · 08/02/2024 15:03

Speaking as someone who is mildly GC, my first response when I heard about Sunak's gibe was 'WTF?'. There's a time and a place to debate these issues but when you have the mother of a dead trans teenager watching (yes she was out of the room, but that was just fortunate timing), you'd think commonsense would steer you away from making that comment.

Everyone who cares about this topic already knows about Starmer's views and those that don't never will care. Sunek could have focused on the Green Plan to make his u-turn comment.

The worst of it is that Mrs Ghey is campaigning on better Internet safety for children and her work in this area is being completely overshadowed by this row.

cakeorwine · 08/02/2024 15:17

There is a time and a place to discuss trans issues.
Was it appropriate to mention trans issues when Mrs Ghey was in the House of Commons and was it appropriate for MPs to laugh?

And all they can say is talking about u-turns.

I hope they feel uncomfortable as hell.

Notonthestairs · 08/02/2024 15:19

Neither party is on firm ground criticising the other for U-turns (hello HS2) - save that one is in actual Government and not just developing a manifesto.

But it wasn't even an appropriate response to the original question.

And yes Esther Ghey's campaign deserves more coverage.

BIossomtoes · 08/02/2024 15:21

I’m assuming that Starmer’s prepared response was a list of Tory U turns. It would certainly have been the obvious one before Sunak’s gaffe.

why hasn’t starmer done this? He needs to. Repeatedly.

thanks for that link @Notonthestairs. very thought provoking. I knew of this kind of tactic but somehow never really connect it to real life events at the time. That’s what makes it such good propaganda I suppose.

I’ve heard noise that their current tactic is ‘let Rishi be Rishi’. Probably because he’s soooo bad at managed appearances. Still I’m not sure that’s the best avenue to take…

It makes sense in the medium term. They can blame their loss of power on him and kick him out more easily.

According to Bloomberg, Property tycoon Tory donor Nick Candy says it’s “time for a change” of government to Labour and praises Keir Starmer’s engagement with business

Candy attended PopCon, has donated mega bucks to the Tory party and was in Shaun Bailey's covid party photo.

His wife Holly Valance of Neighbours fame was praising Truss and wanted JRM for PM after the PopCon launch

RafaistheKingofClay · 08/02/2024 17:14

Roussette · 08/02/2024 11:40

Yes. And this could have been avoided if he had done so straightaway. But doubling down has made it in to a huge media story.
Chris Phipp had a sweaty forehead this morning as he did the rounds defending harsh questioning.
And the Labour billion green deal change sinks into media oblivion (until announcements later on) . Serves them right.

And they can’t really talk about flip flopping on this because the used the flip flop excuse to justify the comment yesterday so it just brings things back round to the non apology.

Rishi and his reverse Midas strike again.

Notonthestairs · 08/02/2024 17:24

Nick Candy limiting his risk/hoping to gain influence by supporting everyone Grin

BIossomtoes · 08/02/2024 17:25

It’s called hedging your bets, isn’t it?

Yup!
Quite odd to say Truss is amazing and Mogg should be PM AND support Labour.

Must admit I had a giggle when I saw that Truss's book has the subheading The Only Conservative In The Room. Absolutely barking.

RafaistheKingofClay · 08/02/2024 17:36

I’m still giggling about the idea she thinks she can save the west. She managed to crash a major global economy in 6 weeks.
