Oh it's infuriating..alongside the "sunak didn't mention trans, starmer bought it up".

Along with “weaponising a murdered child”. Did anyone see Badenock during that exchange? Arrogance personified.

It was on the telly, Tories, We saw what happened. If you didn't see what the rest of us saw and heard then I'm concerned for your health.

Notonthestairs · 07/02/2024 22:38

However they decide to rewrite what we could hear and see, Sunak has upset Brianna's parents.

That said I'm sure they've got a lot more on their minds this week than Sunaks attempts to curry favour with right wing Tories.

Roussette · 08/02/2024 07:13

It comes to something when a former Labour PM criticises the current Tory government in such strong terms. He and his wife have set up a network of charities in Kirkcaldy where child poverty has reached 70% in some areas...he calls it 'a moral outrage'

I'm getting increasingly pissed off with Sunak using PMQs as a Comedy Store audition. The Speaker should be utterly ashamed of himself for permitting Sunak to abuse PMQs in this way. Sunak is an oik with an expensive education, like Johnson, not fit to even wipe the boots of a man such as Gordon Brown.

RafaistheKingofClay · 08/02/2024 07:41

Someone the other week suggested it should be renamed Prime Minister’s answers to remind Rishi what he was supposed to be doing there.

Notonthestairs · 08/02/2024 07:41

If all former PMs focused their minds on raising awareness & improving conditions for the poorest in society they could collectively do so much good for society.

Sadly the majority (& definitely the most recent ones) concentrate on feathering their own nest.

cakeorwine · 08/02/2024 07:47

Chris Phipp just lying on BBC Breakfast. He said that a Labour MP asked a question and then Sunak paid tribute.

Really?

Q7. May I take this opportunity to ask the Prime Minister if he will consider apologising to Brianna Ghey’s mother for his insensitive comment? Turning to my question, the independent report into Teesworks released last Monday throws up more questions than it answers. It is vital that we now have a National Audit Office investigation. The report was scathing and said that there is insufficient transparency to offer evidence of value for money. Should the Government not lead by example, and will the Prime Minister finally release details of his conversations surrounding Teesworks, as he was asked to do twice last year? (901398)

The Prime Minister Sharethis specific contribution
I think the hon. Lady was talking about the report on Teesworks, as far as I can see. What that report noted was that the pace and scope of the regeneration had had a wide-reaching positive impact on the local economy—and of course it was an independent external report. It makes it clear that there is no evidence of corruption or illegality and the Government will of course respond to the recommendations in the report as soon as possible.

Notonthestairs · 08/02/2024 07:51

Why do they lie when there are written records?

cakeorwine · 08/02/2024 07:54

I wish Naga had either seen or read the entire PMQs - then she could have told him that was untrue - and told him what actually happened.

Turns out Phipp missed some of PMQs as well

They are such robots when it comes to answering questions. I wonder where the humanity is?

Roussette · 08/02/2024 08:04

John Crace on yesterday's debacle. He actually sounds angry. Worth a read

Interesting article in the Times from Tom Peck. My stupid share tokens dont work.

From where he was sitting he could read the PMs folder -

"I’ve never had such a detailed look at the inside of Rishi Sunak’s ring binder. Never before seen the barbs, the jibes, the insults all there, written out in long form, ready to go. I never knew he had a page for each question, and each questioner, marked up with a little colour photograph. In the case of the planted ones from supportive backbenchers, he even had the question itself typed out in his notes. A reminder that this is meant to be an exercise in public scrutiny."

Sunak stuck to the prepared script - having been briefed that Esther was in Parliament.

The article goes on to say that Sunak only paid tribute at the end of the session and that the writer thinks that moment will haunt Sunak for however many days in office he has.

I'd like to think it will haunt him beyond that.

VimtoVimto · 08/02/2024 08:07

I think they lie despite the contrary evidence because they are appealing to those who react to sound bites and don’t have the ability or inclination to check further.

JRM was on the Radio 4 politics show on Sunday night and was asked about Sunak’s lack of charisma. He said that Sunak was no Boris Johnson but that Starmer was no Tony Blair. Whether you agree with Blair’s record in government or not, his communication and debating skills far outweighed Johnson’s.

cakeorwine · 08/02/2024 08:10

I just wish that a journalist would just catch them out in a lie, explain what actually happened and then just focus on that lie.

No doubt they would attempt to obfuscate.

The Labour MP should just have asked Sunak to apologise. That should have been the only question. No extra stuff - just a simple question.

DuncinToffee · 08/02/2024 08:41

John Crace describes Sunak perfectly

Love it!

Just seeing Sunak being interviewed in Cornwall now. The journo gave him every single opportunity to apologise for yesterday's jibe. It wasn't a full on interview. As expected, he didn't and just attacked Starmer.
Why? He could've easily worded it in such a way so as not to lose face but he has stuck it out and refused.

Brianna's Dad is right. 'Degrading'

RafaistheKingofClay · 08/02/2024 11:30

I think Bad Enoch doubling down has made it quite difficult to apologise now. Amazing how they’ve managed to screw this up.

Yes. And this could have been avoided if he had done so straightaway. But doubling down has made it in to a huge media story.
Chris Phipp had a sweaty forehead this morning as he did the rounds defending harsh questioning.
And the Labour billion green deal change sinks into media oblivion (until announcements later on) . Serves them right.

Keir Starmer made me do it Confused

MrTiddlesTheCat · 08/02/2024 12:21

I spent 30 years working in customer service and the one thing I learnt are that people are very forgiving if you are humble. Admit your mistake and sincerely apologise and they'll forgive you. Bullshit them and you're in trouble.

I know. The thing I don’t understand is how the most ardent GC women can’t see that it’s an own goal that’s set their cause back. Sunak can’t talk about culture wars now because this will be thrown back in his face every time, same with Badenock after her “helpful” contribution. If I was a single issue GC voter I’d have my head in my hands this morning.

Absolutely. It’s something I’m constantly trying to impress on dd. A bit of humility and holding your hands up 9/10 defuses the situation and reduces people’s anger/annoyance.

@Notonthestairs and there was me thinking they were swotting up on crib notes containing mostly figures and bullet pointed facts. Also gives some insight into why Rishi gives summits and other international leaders a wide berth. He can’t converse.

Cornettoninja · 08/02/2024 12:41

@BIossomtoes i think the most ardent/radicalised of the GC are too emeshed and imbedded in their argument to have any room for humanity.

DuncinToffee · 08/02/2024 12:56

It's ok, Mordaunt tells us that Sunak is a good and caring man and she is sure he has reflected on things.
