Downing Street doubles down on Rishi Sunak’s trans joke.

PM’s Press Secretary: “It’s legitimate to point out the number of U-turns the Leader of the Opposition has made.”

Of course it is. But in that way, today? Come off it.

Notonthestairs · 07/02/2024 13:46

Esther Ghey has been drawn in to the public eye for the most terrible heart wrenching reason and has carried herself with such courage and thoughtfulness.

"today should be a useful reminder to some that “culture wars” are not an abstract political concept separate from people’s actual lives"

Keir Starmer will be meeting Esther Ghey, at her request, later today

As it currently stands, she is not meeting Sunak

Funny that. I wonder if he’s asking himself why.

What I found quite revolting was the last minute or two of PMQs when he was dripping with praise for Esther Ghey. Insincere. He obviously realised he'd made a huge mistake with a nasty joke about trans people so was trying to make it all better.

Didn't work, Rishi, didn't work. He's getting his arse handed to him on a plate on Twitter. Good.

Disgusting, but it seems to be the line the Tories are now spewing out.

Masterful bit of DARVO there, well done Kemi.
Definitely what we need in a leader.

IClaudine · 07/02/2024 15:58

Starmer weoponised nothing. You can see from the clip that he was genuinely upset.

Roussette · 07/02/2024 16:03

#Apologise is trending on Twitter with 33K tweets. Badenoch is awful, someone needs to remind her who it was that made the crass and unpleasant joke about trans people... her boss.

DuncinToffee · 07/02/2024 16:05

It's partygate all over again

IClaudine · 07/02/2024 16:09

Even Dan Hodges thinks Sunak is a liability and that he should apologise.

Roussette · 07/02/2024 16:09

Oh please no... I can't cope with the usual suspects defending this like they did with partygate Shock

EffieeBriest · 07/02/2024 16:12

@Roussette indeed. Is there a thread about it yet ? Anyone tell me why Sunak can be wishy washy and vacillate (particularly over this issue) but Starmer can’t ? Usual suspects somehow believe that Sunak is sincere but not Starmer and then in the same sentence claim they are life long labour voters ?

Saucery · 07/02/2024 16:16

Ugh, I loathe the “as a mother” line when anyone uses it.

Saucery · 07/02/2024 16:16

Edited to remove duplicate post

There is a thread in fwr but I would steer clear

Ooh I might have a look #sadomasochismforthewin

Just been. It’s not nearly as bad as I feared.

Not sure I'm in the mood for a drubbing if I say what I want....

Careful, mustn't let there be a hint of TAAT.

Also, I’m not really sure she can imagine the trauma Esther Ghey has been through even as a mother.

I don’t think it’s possible unless you’ve been there yourself.

Quite. You certainly don't have to be a mother or a parent. All you need is a bit of humanity.

The 'as a mother' line didn't work out so well for Leadsom as I recall.

Cornettoninja · 07/02/2024 17:54

I spent far too much of my life arguing over that on another site @pointythings. It’s quite something to witness adults justifying trimming budgets by demonising children and condoning violence as a viable alternative to support.
