"£7,897 - booze bill for Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak's party to mark the moment the UK left the EU at 11pm, on January 31, 2020"

Celebrating knocking 4% off GDP? How very Conservative.

I am afraid I think Sunak will hang on until December.

So we have a whole 10 plus months of Tory families fighting rather than governing (so no bloody change there).

IClaudine · 29/01/2024 15:53

10 months?! I was thinking of giving up drinking, but not sure now is the right time!

DuncinToffee · 29/01/2024 17:27

Lord German

This bill asks us to believe that black is white. That facts are not facts. It breaches conventions and treaties to which we are signed up. It damages our credibility on the world stage. It damages our relationship with things we've already signed up to. It damages the separation of powers in our country which is a fundamental tenet of democracy"

Notonthestairs · 29/01/2024 17:29

Ken Clarke - who was Tory Lord Chancellor a decade OK - absolute slamming the Rwanda Bill in the Lords:

"Bill overturns a finding of fact....a very dangerous constitutional proposition....powers need to be controlled by some constitutional limits"

He will vote for amendments.

DuncinToffee · 29/01/2024 17:53

Sam Freedman seems to think that it's likely that the LD fatal notion will fail but that the Lords will vote for amendments and go into ping pong with the Commons in March sometime.

FFS 'evil plotters' Hmm

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/jan/29/kemi-badenoch-member-evil-plotters-tory-whatsapp-group

Kemi Badenoch is a member of a Conservative WhatsApp group called “Evil Plotters” despite telling party rebels to “stop messing around” and get behind Rishi Sunak, the Guardian can reveal.

In a round of broadcast interviews on Sunday, she dismissed speculation over the plot to topple Sunak as “Westminster tittle-tattle” and said colleagues who put her name forward as an alternative were “not my friends”.

Exclusive: Business secretary who has told party rebels to stop ‘stirring’ and back PM is in group along with Michael Gove

In fairness evil plotters applies to quite a broad range of Tory MPs.

But yes, utter hypocrites.

That sounds like the kind of group name my 16 year old would find funny 😜

I don't drink. But I think 10 months more of this could drive me to it 😂

I miss Ken Clarke and his ilk. He must be ashamed of what the party has become

So do I.

countrygirl99 · 30/01/2024 07:45

I heard an interview with Norman Fowler a few months ago and was struck by how measured and intelligent he sounded compared to the current lot.

Notonthestairs · 30/01/2024 07:47

I imagine Clark and his ilk aren't considered truly conservative by some wings of the Conservative Party now (looking at you Truss,Braverman, Jenrick etc)
I think we miss political discourse rather than populist drivel.

newnamethanks · 30/01/2024 07:51

Scary isn't it? Any of the Old Binned Tories - God help us, even Nicholas Soamea on occasion - sound like quite reasonable people I'd happily vote for over the rabble that's manifested as the current Tory party. They really are beneath contempt, the whole bunch of them without redemption.

This. I remember when you actually got debate, not mocking mud slinging from the government.

Yes, I've always caught PMQs when I can, dear god how it's changed, typified by Johnson playing to his braying and jeering backbenchers. It's always been raucous but I have seen a huge change since then, not helped with a not so good Speaker. Betty Boothroyd would have kept them in order, Hoyle doesn't.
It's painful to watch.

newnamethanks · 30/01/2024 08:32

Entertainment for all. Housing Minister wheeled out on itv to stutter and fumble re train strike. Not going well.

pointythings · 30/01/2024 08:34

Thing is, they believe this politics as bad reality show is what people want. And if the 'Starmer is boring ' brigade are any indication, they may have a point.
Me, I want sober, capable, grown up politicians.

AdamRyan · 30/01/2024 08:37

I think/hope most people want that pointy
I admire starmer for not getting drawn in. It must be very hard on occasions.

I have seen a few threads popping up about VAT on private schools

https://x.com/MattChorley/status/1752248831087960147?s=20

NEW: Exclusive @YouGov polling for Times Radio Breakfast...

Charging VAT on private schools supported by 62% of voters, including 4 in 10 who went to private school, and 3 in 10 parents who send their kids to private school now

Yes. Hoyle is a dead loss.

At last some good news from Northern Ireland where power-sharing will be restored.
