Do you think an attack like the twin towers will ever happen again in our life time?

Watching remember me and world trade centre and it made me wonder would an attack like that ever happen again in our life time?

Im not naive enough to say will it ever happen again because it probably will. 100 years from now, 200 years from now, someone will orchestra another attack.

But do you think an attack like that could happen again in the next 50-70 years?

I assume so.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 22/01/2024 15:57

Unfortunately, I’d be surprised if it didn’t.

Needmorelego · 22/01/2024 15:59

There's been plenty of terrorist attacks since 9/11.
Loads. Far too many.

slomosha · 22/01/2024 15:59

I hope not! Not only did many people die it also changed the world for the worse. However it wouldn't surprise me.

Papyrophile · 22/01/2024 16:01

It can't be ruled out, as long as there are extremists (of any persuasion).

Cicchetti · 22/01/2024 16:02

Do you mean in the US or UK? Because there have been many attacks since then, even recently.

ConciseQueen · 22/01/2024 16:03

It depends what you mean by ‘like’ or similar to. There has been plenty of violence since 2001.

MidnightPatrol · 22/01/2024 16:05

What do you mean by an 'attack like the twin towers'? One of that size?

I mean - Israel experience a terrorist attack in which 1,400 of their people were killed three months ago.

I guess it’s a silly one for me to single out when there have been terrorists attacks all over the world, but I think the twin tower one sticks in my head because it was publicised so much.

I think terrorists have resorted to “easier” attacks like driving into crowds, etc (like Nice). Even something like the Bataclan is still very very rare.
The twin towers must have taken meticulous planning and maybe it’s just too hard now security is tighter for most places.
I always wonder whether “disaster movies” gave them some of the ideas or appetite for doing something so spectacular. It was hideous and yet it was a spectacle.

IncompleteSenten · 22/01/2024 16:06

Yes. It could happen at any point.

This.

Watching protesters in the US and Europe showing support for the Houthis with their attacks on ships. Protesters screaming at people merely eating in McDonalds. Protesters chanting support for terrorist aims.

People praising October 7th around the world.

Then I can see an uprising in hatred towards the west with potential lone wolf strikes feeling vindicated.

Aeroplanes hijacked probably unlikely but solo terrorist killings I'm the US, yes sadly. Too many fools sympathetic to terrorism.

Soubriquet · 22/01/2024 16:09

I thought security on airlines was starting to calm down now which is what prompted me to think this.

Technology has just improved rather than thread level decreasing.

Foxblue · 22/01/2024 16:15

Yes - but a cyber attack that causes drastic loss of life, as opposed to a terrorist physically attacking people.

LoobyDop · 22/01/2024 16:21

To prevent an attack like that, the security services have to get it right every time. To make one happen, the terrorists only have to get it right once.

MrsMarzetti · 22/01/2024 16:22

Not sure if planes being flown into a building will happen again but as we know terrorist attacks take many forms.

Hmmmmaybe · 22/01/2024 16:22

What do you think happened on 7 October OP?

Nat6999 · 22/01/2024 16:23

I think there will be more attacks like 7/7 & Manchester Arena, one person who has been brainwashed & causes death & chaos on their own.

Hmmmmaybe · 22/01/2024 16:24

Manchester Arena bombing?

London tube bombings?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/01/2024 16:26

I don’t see why it wouldn’t. I wouldn’t even rule out another attack involving a plane, just because the precise method of hijacking one might have been made more difficult.

spitefulandbadgrammar · 22/01/2024 16:26

A coordinated plane hijack on skyscrapers? No, but only because it’s the kind of attack you can only do once before security measures are taken against it. Coordinated attacks with mass casualties? October 7th is still fresh; this thread feels a bit speculatively gaslighting – “Oh, I meant real terrorism.”

Redcar78 · 22/01/2024 16:28

I hope not, I remember every detail of that day. I was 23 and just couldn't believe what I was seeing. Yes there have been other attacks since but it was so sudden and shocking that it stays with you.

Redcar78 · 22/01/2024 16:29

TBF I'd visited NY and been up the towers 2 weeks before the attack so that may have a bearing on why I found it so shocking.
