15yo dd has lost so much weight, I'm worried

As per the title really, she has been feeling sick every time she eats anything sweet for a while now.

She has lost probably about 2-3 stone in the last 3 months (I don't keep scales in the house so not sure exactly).

She is eating, definitely, she isn't making herself sick, I'm 100% sure of that.

Her mood is quite low, she is really pale, the weight loss is very concerning, she feels sick when she eats anything sweet, she has absolutely horrendous periods, but has been on the pill for around 9 months (could this be the reason for the weight loss).

We are waiting for some blood tests to come back next week, but I have stupidly, spent the evening googling and am now terrified.

I'm hoping the test comes back and actually finds something, as mad as it sounds, just so it can be fixed, if it shows up with nothing then where do I go from there? What further tests should I be asking for.

Any help or words of advice or thoughts would be so appreciated.

I wouldn't be so sure she isn't making herself sick :-(

Could she be disguising an eating disorder as nausea? Unfortunately in her age group this is much more common than a health issue causing significant weight loss.

The doctor said that because she is feeling sick after sugar, and her blood pressure is low it wouldn't be diabetes? She gets lightheaded quite often too which the docer said wouldnt happen. I don't know much about it tbh, I just took her at her word.

I'm absolutely sure that she doesn't have an eating disorder of any sort. I can see how it would look like that, but she definitely hasn't.

I've been where you are with a 14 year old daughter. Are you absolutely sure she is eating? I thought my daughter was. She wasn't. You will not believe how clever they can be. Food in pockets, food up sleeves, food held in their mouths and spat out later.

It took me several months to realise what was happening. We had hospital admissions, she lied to CAMHS, but it came out in the end. She was anorexic. She had a battery of tests for all kinds and was in and out of hospital. I couldn't believe it but looking back, it was the obvious answer. The GP was useless. A paediatrician diagnosed her in the end when she was so ill her heart was starting to fail.

I don't want to frighten you but I was so naive. Get yourself on the teen eating disorder thread. You need to fight for your daughter and more than anything you need to get her eating 3 meals and 3 snacks a day. Anything I can help with please message me.

I suggested diabetes as I remember working with a lad in his late teens years ago who lost a shit ton of weight and it ended up being type 1

Your daughter will lie to you if she is gripped by an eating disorder. She'll lie to everyone. They can't help it. It's like their brains have been possessed. I argued until I was blue in the face she was eating because she appeared to be. I was wrong.

Could be anaemia. When my blood is low, like really low, the weight just falls off me and I constantly feel nauseous etc

Report
olympicsrock · 21/01/2024 20:01

Why are you so sure that she has not got an eating disorder ? I lied to everyone for months and went to massive lengths to conceal it. I ate with family , made excuses not to eat much , waited an hour or so and then vomited. I didn’t eat at school .

My daughter appeared that she had diabetes. She was drinking loads (because they do- water loading to try to stop the hunger and keep their weight up). Low blood sugar because they're not eating. Tired because they've lost so much weight. Thinner because they just are. Drastically so. Has she got fine hair over her body? (Lanugo?)

My daughter had terrible periods too. She has never really been able to explain why she stopped eating. Sometimes I wonder if subconsciously she was trying to stop her periods. (And they did stop- back now thankfully).

diabetic what you describe is how i was at 17, yes i feel faint when sugars are high/low, feel sick after food. Dr also told me when i went that at 16 i shouldn't be feeling so tired as i was young and sent me away. Being and feeling sick is one of the first signs i have of going into ketoacidosis (when your sugars are too high). I also have very low blood pressure. AandE asap.

I couldn't be surer the she doesn't have an eating disorder, honestly, that was my first thought too, but she is eating normally, just not sweet things or she gets nauseous and light headed. We have been together 24/7 the last few weeks for various reasons, she has been upset and worried about the weight loss too.

I had an eating disorder as a teen so I know the signs and she isn't showing any of them at all. I know it does sound like it, but it absolutely isn't.

Type one diabetes warning signs
Toilet
Thirsty
Thinner
Tired

She has had a couple of urine infections lately, the doctor hasn't tested, just given her meds over the phone, she's always been really thirsty anyway, even as a baby, she's thinner and tired a lot, but then can't sleep as well.

Aren't people born with type 1? Would it randomly appear at 15?

Also the weight loss is so fast when you go into keto can lose easily a stone a week

People are not born with type 1, I was diagnosed at 16 after three weeks of sudden weight loss, nausea, tiredness etc. I think it sounds like it could be diabetes x

My friend developed type 1 diabetes in her 30s.

I have a doctors appointment with her tomorrow again with a different doctor (hopefully her bloods will be back by then actually).

I had to insist on the full blood screening as the first 2 doctors heard 'low mood' and wanted to put her on antidepressants rather than test for anything underlying.

The first one I spoke to was so sure it wasn't diabeties, she gave her omeprazole until her bloods come back, she said it could be reflux, despite showing zero symptoms of reflux.

I'm anemic, which makes me tired, I didn't think it would cause drastic weight loss though.

I'm going ti look more into diabetes now, I dismissed it because the doctor did.

Please do look into diabetes. A friend’s 17 year old was just diagnosed with it. It developed over a few weeks - tired, thirsty and losing weight

Please do consider coelaics disease as she has all those symptoms too. There is a symptom checker on the coelaics uk website.

She does have dark shadows around her eyes as well.

I am so utterly ignorant about diabetes, Im ashamed to say, I'm going to do some research just now. It sounds like that may well be it.

I can't understand why the doctor dismissed it within seconds when it sounds like she has all of the symptoms.

I genuinely thought people were born with type 1 and developed type 2.

I know i should be stepping away from Google at this point, but I'm panicking now. I think I need a minute to be dramatic before I get my sensible head on.

Thank you everyone for talking this through with me.
