15yo dd has lost so much weight, I'm worried

As per the title really, she has been feeling sick every time she eats anything sweet for a while now.

She has lost probably about 2-3 stone in the last 3 months (I don't keep scales in the house so not sure exactly).

She is eating, definitely, she isn't making herself sick, I'm 100% sure of that.

Her mood is quite low, she is really pale, the weight loss is very concerning, she feels sick when she eats anything sweet, she has absolutely horrendous periods, but has been on the pill for around 9 months (could this be the reason for the weight loss).

We are waiting for some blood tests to come back next week, but I have stupidly, spent the evening googling and am now terrified.

I'm hoping the test comes back and actually finds something, as mad as it sounds, just so it can be fixed, if it shows up with nothing then where do I go from there? What further tests should I be asking for.

Any help or words of advice or thoughts would be so appreciated.

Just to mention her periods will have settled down because in the pill you don’t ovulate. So you don’t have a period. You bleed but it isn’t a period.
Her period issues probably still need investigating- I understand the other issues are more serious right now.
I hope you get some answers. It sounds very worrying.

Hope you got there OK in this foul weather and don't have to wait too long

DyslexicPoster · 21/01/2024 21:52

I hope you get seen fast. My eldest is like a rake and he has got possible thyroid issues but he is 20 so it's not easy to intervene

Mirabai · 21/01/2024 21:54

The doctor said that because she is feeling sick after sugar, and her blood pressure is low it wouldn't be diabetes? She gets lightheaded quite often too which the docer said wouldnt happen. I don't know much about it tbh, I just took her at her word.

Diabetes can cause lightheadedness/ dizziness, nausea and low bp. I don’t know what her doctor is talking about. (UTI could also be a symptom due to higher concentration of glucose in the urine).

I really hope it’s not and I hope you have some answers soon. Good luck in A&E.

I had a friend who had severe endometriosis - they only took her seriously when she lost an incredible amount of weight and couldn't eat at all.

Turns out the endometriosis had grown inside her intestine - making her sick every time she ate and causing dramatic weight lost. It had to be surgically removed. You mention bad periods - could this be something similar??

Alargeoneplease89 · 21/01/2024 21:58

Hope you get to the bottom of it.

Type 1 can be caused by post viral effects in very rare cases I believe.

I would be looking toward thyroid personally.

dontforgetme · 21/01/2024 22:43

Hope you get some answers op x

T1 diabetes needs to be ruled out.
Also Addisons Disease, as already mentioned.

Rarewaxwing · 21/01/2024 23:09

I know it's been said above, but just want to add to the voices suggesting coeliac disease. My son lost a scary amount of weight before he was diagnosed. Coeliac UK have all the information you need, plus a helpline.

Daysie · 21/01/2024 23:15

Hope she's ok.

blackpanth · 21/01/2024 23:17

Hope she's okay x

A random theory, and I sincerely hope this is not true, but mention it as I am aware of some teens doing this, but could there be any chance she is purchasing weight loss injections online from less than credible suppliers?

It might explain the speed of weight loss and the feeling sick and lightheaded as a reaction...

Catmama123 · 21/01/2024 23:27

Hope DD is okay and you're seen quickly tonight & get some answers 🤞🏼

Hope you get some answers OP bless you, it sounds really worrying.

MumofCrohnie · 21/01/2024 23:44

I might ask them to go a stool test for calprotectin too. It could be inflammatory bowel disease which causes appetite suppression and weight loss. Diarrhea is common with IBD but not everyone affected has it.

Chichimcgee · 21/01/2024 23:51

I think I’m the only person with coeliac disease who never lost weight. In my experience with coeliac you generally feel shitty all the time, this seems more like a sudden onset of symptoms which would suggest something else going on. I really hope you get answers soon.

legallyblond · 21/01/2024 23:53

I’d add you should also have all thyroid levels checked. Many diabetics symptoms are also for Graves’ disease (hypER thyroidism). I developed this at 17. Got very very thin (size 10/12 to size 6), was eating loads, very thirsty, insomnia, sweating and dark circles round the eyes. It’s treatable but drs don’t often spot it… hope she’s ok xxx

NotMyFirstChoiceofName · 22/01/2024 00:14

When you say she feels sick with sweet things, so you mean chocolate and sweets? Or pastries, cakes and biscuits, sweetened fruit yogurts and milk shakes ? If it’s only the latter, it might be the gluten and not the sweetness.

Is she ok with rice and potatoes ? ( not processed like oven chips )?

That could point to coeliac disease or a severe gluten intolerance ( they are different things although have the same treatment, which is avoiding gluten).

But yes it could also be thyroid disease ( takes a few weeks to test for ) or Type 1 diabetes ( takes 5 mins to test for ).

I think it’s pretty poor of your Gp not to have seen her in person yet, I hope you get some answers in the next 24 hours.

Id also suggest NOT mentioning her low mood. It’s not really her main symptom and may be effect rather than cause.

IHateLegDay · 22/01/2024 00:17

I hope your dd gets some answers asap xxx
