15yo dd has lost so much weight, I'm worried

As per the title really, she has been feeling sick every time she eats anything sweet for a while now.

She has lost probably about 2-3 stone in the last 3 months (I don't keep scales in the house so not sure exactly).

She is eating, definitely, she isn't making herself sick, I'm 100% sure of that.

Her mood is quite low, she is really pale, the weight loss is very concerning, she feels sick when she eats anything sweet, she has absolutely horrendous periods, but has been on the pill for around 9 months (could this be the reason for the weight loss).

We are waiting for some blood tests to come back next week, but I have stupidly, spent the evening googling and am now terrified.

I'm hoping the test comes back and actually finds something, as mad as it sounds, just so it can be fixed, if it shows up with nothing then where do I go from there? What further tests should I be asking for.

Any help or words of advice or thoughts would be so appreciated.

@Ddhealthworry seriously don't wait until tomorrow to go to the drs she needs to be seen now ( not trying to scare you) but it can get very serious if she doesn't get seen soon as in tonight

Ddhealthworry · 21/01/2024 20:21

Coelaics is something else I'm really ignorant about. I'll have a look at that too. Thank you.

I am a good mum, honestly, I have child with complex medical needs, another who is autistic and I know everything about their conditions inside out and upside down.

I think anaemia too, has the ocp helped to reduce the heaviness of her periods?

indignatio · 21/01/2024 20:22

Please do consider coelaics disease as she has all those symptoms too. There is a symptom checker on the coelaics uk website.

Please check this

What about the gynae issues? I often felt quite sick after sweet things as a child. I later had PCOS endometriosis. The body’s reaction to sugar can make you feel nauseas and cysts to grow if you have PCOS. You are at increased risk of T2 diabetes. It is very painful too. I’m not sure how early they can actually diagnose.

Do you think so? She's sitting absolutely fine at the minute watching a film and eating monster munch.

Do you think I should call 111 or go to A&E?

God I don't know what to do.

If you suspect type 1 diabetes you need to get her seen tonight - a quick urine test should rule it in or out, but if it is that she could be hours/days/weeks away from a serious coma, but you just don’t know if it could be hours away and it’s not worth the risk.

Her periods were crippling and horrendous, I thought she probably had endo, but the doctors said they wouldn't do any tests at her age so put her on the pill. That has settled them right down for the moment.

When were the blood tests done ?

PopcornBandit · 21/01/2024 20:28

Ask your GP for a referral to a dietitian ASAP!

Thursday afternoon, they should be back by tomorrow's appointment.

It could be a number of things but 2 stone over 2-3 months is an alarming amount of weight loss and I'm surprised this hasn't raised red flags to the GP. I don't think anyone should be presuming an eating disorder until other causes have been ruled out. If this was an adult I'm pretty sure an endoscopy would have been arranged as a 2 week wait. I think you should push for this to be taken more seriously.

definitely tonight, i was about 30 mins from a coma last time i went in with keto. The darkening under her eyes is a tell tale sign of mine going high my partner always knows, and yes UTIs are also very common so much so i get a prescription ready for my next one.

EllaPaella · 21/01/2024 20:29

And totally agree diabetes needs to be ruled out

Do you have online access to her records? The results may be visible now.

newname1234456 · 21/01/2024 20:31

don't worry about wasting anyone's time with what you have said i would want to get it ruled out and be on the safe side
can you smell sweet things on her breath usually like pear drops

hippoo · 21/01/2024 20:31

did the doctor do a finger prick test for diabetes? It sounds like type 1. Can come on quite suddenly and if untreated consistently high blood sugars can lead
to DKA diabetic ketoacidodis which can be fatal. I'd go to A&E and they'll do a finger prick test

Hiyawotcha · 21/01/2024 20:32

My friend’s ds suddenly lost about 2 stone at 15 and was diagnosed with T1 diabetes.
He was also very tired and was drinking/peeing loads.
It was only really when she happened to look at some old photos on her phone that she realised he looked like crap in comparison.
He’s got it well under control now.

MumblesParty · 21/01/2024 20:33

Personally I wouldn’t go to A&E tonight unless she was acutely unwell, given that you’ve already got an appointment tomorrow

Ddhealthworry · 21/01/2024 20:35

The doctor didn't do a finger prick test, she just dismissed diabetes immediatly.
I had a look at coelaics and it says on the checker thing to make an appointment as she could be at risk.

Just trying to arrange a babysitter for my younger kids and I'm taking her to A&E.

My surgery doesn't do online access to blood tests unfortunately, her appointment isn't until half 4 tomorrow.

Autoimmune conditions love company - it's possible she has something which is period related and then T1 diabetes or coeliacs. Autoimmune conditions can manifest at anytime, there are numerous children/teens who developed T1 following a virus in our area about 10 years ago. Coeliacs can lay dormant for years and activated by an environmental factor such as stress. I hope you find out what's going on and quickly. Once you get somewhere with the weight loss I would re visit the period issues - sticking someone on the pill without investigating is not a long term solution.

I don't know, I have no sense of small at all, nobody has ever said anything though.

Diabetes is VERY easy to diagnose. Tomorrow you must absolutely insist on either a urine test or a blood test - both can be done instantly and will rule it in or out. And yes it most definitely comes on suddenly at 15 - mine did. Lost a stone, but was also absolutely parched with thirst and drinking in middle of night, so it may not be that, but you must urgently get it ruled out or in as very very serious if undiagnosed.

SE20schools · 21/01/2024 20:37

Well done OP. My son was diagnosed type 1 last month with all the same signs as yoru daughter. GPs can be quite dismissive and ignorant of Type 1 diabetes as they actually don't come across it very much - i had done my research and pretty much walked in and asked them to test him on the spot and the doctor thought I was mad. I was right. We were sent immediately to A and E.

Don't worry about wasting time and just go. And let us know how it goes.

SE20schools · 21/01/2024 20:38

Can you get someone else to smell her breath? If it smells like nail varnish remover that's a tell take sign of type 1 and you need to get her seen now.
