15yo dd has lost so much weight, I'm worried

Ddhealthworry · 21/01/2024 19:43

As per the title really, she has been feeling sick every time she eats anything sweet for a while now.

She has lost probably about 2-3 stone in the last 3 months (I don't keep scales in the house so not sure exactly).

She is eating, definitely, she isn't making herself sick, I'm 100% sure of that.

Her mood is quite low, she is really pale, the weight loss is very concerning, she feels sick when she eats anything sweet, she has absolutely horrendous periods, but has been on the pill for around 9 months (could this be the reason for the weight loss).

We are waiting for some blood tests to come back next week, but I have stupidly, spent the evening googling and am now terrified.

I'm hoping the test comes back and actually finds something, as mad as it sounds, just so it can be fixed, if it shows up with nothing then where do I go from there? What further tests should I be asking for.

Any help or words of advice or thoughts would be so appreciated.

I don't know, I have no sense of small at all, nobody has ever said anything though.

your doing the right thing, good luck and keep us updated

RandomMess · 21/01/2024 20:39

I'm glad you are taking her to A&E Flowers

The doctor said that because she is feeling sick after sugar, and her blood pressure is low it wouldn't be diabetes? She gets lightheaded quite often too which the docer said wouldnt happen. I don't know much about it tbh, I just took her at her word.

I'm absolutely sure that she doesn't have an eating disorder of any sort. I can see how it would look like that, but she definitely hasn't.

my daughter had low blood pressure and was dizzy/lightheaded when she was diagnosed. Had the big weight loss too. Also felt tired all the time and had some blurry vision. Does your daughter have any of these? Your doctor sounds shocking. It was a nurse practitioner who realised my daughter had type 1, after a simple finger prick test. Straight to hospital and intensive care. We would have lost her if we'd waited.

hippoo · 21/01/2024 20:40

oh and the nausea too. She always felt sick

SE20schools · 21/01/2024 20:42

Well done OP, keep us updated.

Coelaics is something else I'm really ignorant about. I'll have a look at that too. Thank you.

I am a good mum, honestly, I have child with complex medical needs, another who is autistic and I know everything about their conditions inside out and upside down.

Of course you are a good Mum. ♥️ don't ever doubt it.
Hope your daughter js ok and you find answers soon. In the meantime sending you strength.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 21/01/2024 20:45

I hope you get to the bottom of this.

One of my friends was diagnosed with T1 diabetes when he was 16.

FoodieToo · 21/01/2024 20:50

But the girl only has weight loss as a symptom ? My sibling had T1 and I thought that thirst and excessive urination were almost always present as the body tries to manage the excess sugar without adequate insulin ?

Regardless, hope you get some answers OP. My son had an ED and it doesn't really sound like that either . So many different presentations though of course .

Hatsforbats · 21/01/2024 20:50

My friend sounded similar when we were about 16, pale, she lost an alarming amount of weight until she was about 5 stone, tired all the time, certain foods made her feel sick, really pale and thirsty.
Turned out she had graves disease. Went on thyroid medication and after a few up and downs evened out and has been healthy for years now.

Hope you find out what your daughter has soon

NerdyIsMyMiddleName · 21/01/2024 20:57

My sister had similar when she was around 19 and at Uni. She got really really skinny, couldn't eat because it hurt so much. Her GP and Uni said it was either drugs (it wasn't) or an eating disorder (it wasn't, she loves food, just literally couldn't eat).

She got very very sick, and could have died, before our parents said enough was enough and paid for a private consultation with a gastroenterologist, who found out within a few weeks that she had Crohn's and her entire gut was ulcerated. At that point she was skin and bones, a shadow of her former self.

I'm a fan of the NHS for many reasons, but for whatever reason - maybe lack of resources, lack of time, an inability to believe what a teenage girl told them, or lack of knowledge of this dreadful disease - it was not their finest hour.

Bookworm1111 · 21/01/2024 20:59

Does she have any unexplained bruising? Any pain on the left side of her ribs?

KimKardassion · 21/01/2024 21:02

I haven’t read all the answers so apologies if someone else said this but what about overactive thyroid? It can really mess with your moods and cause period problems.
Sending hugs to you both OP.

whatisheupto · 21/01/2024 21:03

Well done for going to a and e. When you get there:

I wouldn't mention the periods or low mood.

Just say you would like her to be tested for diabetes.

Due to weight loss, thirst and tiredness.

Don't confuse them with other symptoms - keep it simple.

Just get that urine test.

WarningOfGails · 21/01/2024 21:03

Hope all is okay.

Hollyhead · 21/01/2024 21:04

Yes what @whatisheupto said - all you need tonight is to just rule that out, it is quite frankly highly concerning that for the sake of a finger prick the gp didn’t rule it out.

CormorantStrikesBack · 21/01/2024 21:08

Dd had this and it was coeliac disease, dark circles under the eyes can also be a sign of this. But you’re right to get diabetes ruled out tonight.

Legburn · 21/01/2024 21:09

Hope it goes ok 🤞🏻

Techno56 · 21/01/2024 21:11

Also worth asking them to check her for Addison's disease

Greensleevevssnotnose · 21/01/2024 21:18

I

YukoandHiro · 21/01/2024 21:22

Good luck, just keep pushing. X

LowlandLassie · 21/01/2024 21:23

We’ve just had a coeliac diagnosis for my 15yo Dd, and one of her main symptoms was weight loss. Test results for this can take around 2-3 weeks to come back.

MissHavershamReturns · 21/01/2024 21:23

Would also get a thyroid function test. I felt sick and lost a lot of weight suddenly with overactive thyroid

ChangeAgain2 · 21/01/2024 21:39

Thinking of you @Ddhealthworry . I hope you get some answers at A &E.

Wholovesabitofcheese · 21/01/2024 21:42
