Did having Covid make you permanently go off chocolate?

Just this, really. I had a horrible experience one of the times I had covid when I had started to lose my sense of smell and taste before I even realised I was ill, and chocolate was absolutely disgusting. I couldn't taste any of the sweetness but could still taste the other elements, so it was just bitter, oily and horrible. Boak. Now, some years on, I just don't like it anymore. I've lost my sweet tooth generally and the thought and taste of chocolate is fairly off-putting. I keep trying to like it again Grin but I can't.
Anyone else have this happen to them?

Chocolate is very poor these days and everything tastes of oil and grease regardless of covid. It never fails to disappoint.

BlackeyedSusan · 19/01/2024 15:20

No, but some things taste different and are just uninspiring. Rather annoying.

TrashedSofa · 19/01/2024 15:33

No, my love of the stuff remains undimmed.

Sadly, no.

I never had much of a sweet tooth anyway, but I definitely found my taste in food changed and is no better 2 years on.I used to love experimenting with flavours but I only ever fancy really plain food now.A jacket potato is no longer a quick dinner, but a favourite :/

Em3978 · 19/01/2024 15:40

I've gone off my favourite dark chocolate, it just tastes of nothing now. But thankfully milk chocolate is still ok!

Werenearlytherexmas2024 · 19/01/2024 15:51

Maybe the other way around.

I used to hate chocolate and would feel sick after a couple of bites so I avoided it. In the last few years I love it.

HappyAxolotl · 19/01/2024 16:00

Yes me! Pre-covid I had a small-bar-a-day habit and after covid I rarely fancy chocolate. It isn't even that it tastes different now, I haven't noticed any difference in the taste. I just don't want chocolate now.

Chocolate is the only food I have lost my appetite for, how weird.

NewYear24 · 19/01/2024 16:01

Not permanently but yes it did temporarily. The first I went off my beloved hot chocolate and also chocolate. The second time just chocolate. I had Covid over Christmas and still don’t want any chocolate, what I do fancy is salty crisps or Pringles with lots of flavour on.

Phew that was a close one.

AnnaFallana · 19/01/2024 16:04

Not chocolate, but I can't drink coffee anymore. 😫

fatandhappy47 · 19/01/2024 16:09

Nope
However I can't abide the taste of Pepsi anymore

AllAroundMyCat · 19/01/2024 17:24

I went off chocolate ( something I'd never thought that I would say) long before Covid.
Palm oil ended my love of it. There's not much chocolate now that I do like.
Covid certainly exacerbated it but there are other foods that I can no longer tolerate.

Most fruits now taste very bitter. Melon is fine.
I'm very fussy about eggs now
Lamb ( my beloved) often smells foul but the biggest disappointment was no longer tolerating my beloved wine.
I can tolerate a different grape variety but it's just not the same. Probably a good thing!

runningonberocca · 19/01/2024 17:44

No but for some reason it gave me a craving for Kitkats - the normal non chunky ones! I’ve had Covid 3 times - each time the Kitkat craving came back!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 19/01/2024 19:47

Sadly not. I'd be half a stone lighter if it had. I've never had the losing sense of smell thing though.

lightand · 19/01/2024 19:50

Well, I hardly eat any, any more now.
And it did coincide with that time.
Cant say I have put two and two together before. But maybe?

Like others are saying, chocolate doesnt taste as nice as it used to.
I did munch on a few of DH chocolate buttons recently, and thought there were tasting good. More like old time chocolate.

Sadly No. Blush

Ladyof2022 · 19/01/2024 20:20

Oh my goodness I can't believe the title of this thread!

I have been a chocoholic for all of my adult life. Up until June last year I was eating a whole Terry's Chocolate Orange every day. Some days I'd even eat two of them!

Then I got covid and the very first thing I noticed was that the mere thought of eating chocolate made me feel sick.

I was ill for about two or three weeks and when I got better I found to my immense surprise that I know longer wanted to eat chocolate. And here we are on the verge of February and I have not tasted chocolate for almost seven months.

It's absolutely amazing, I never dreamed this would be the way that my chocolate addiction would end after battling with it or nearly 50 years.

Loafbeginsat60 · 19/01/2024 20:22

Yes it did the same to me. It makes me so sad as I love chocolate and everywhere we go for dinner, the desserts are about 75% chocolate. It's so hard to find a "treat" when you fancy one in a shop too.

I have come to like the white chocolate that comes with Biscoff crème inside.

To me milk and dark chocolate tastes like burnt plastic. I had covid in 2020 so I don't think it's going to get any better sadly. I suppose it's much better for my waistline tho as I used to eat chocolate every day.

Covid also changed my sense of smell - I can't stand the smell of coffee or cigarette smoke now - they both smell very odd indeed. I also can't stand peppers 🫑 which I used to really love. Such random things to dislike now!

IHS · 19/01/2024 22:05

I've lost my sense of taste and smell and things I can detect taste weird and a bit 'off'. Dh was cooking some meat the other day and all I could think was "ew, that smells like a dead body". I still ate it though 😂 (need the protein).

This.

Plus you go off chocolate as you age.

MeandBobbyMcGoo · 19/01/2024 22:29

Chocolate made me go off chocolate. It is all so slimy and grainy now. Maybe covid or cost saving methods because of the pandemic. My hearing has gone though.

Clingfilm · 19/01/2024 22:40

I wish!

Actually, you could have a point.
Older people than me, rarely talk about eating chocolate.

ShipshapeShore · 20/01/2024 08:20

Yes this happened to DD. She can't even stand the smell of it. She wants to like it again!
