Did having Covid make you permanently go off chocolate?

Just this, really. I had a horrible experience one of the times I had covid when I had started to lose my sense of smell and taste before I even realised I was ill, and chocolate was absolutely disgusting. I couldn't taste any of the sweetness but could still taste the other elements, so it was just bitter, oily and horrible. Boak. Now, some years on, I just don't like it anymore. I've lost my sweet tooth generally and the thought and taste of chocolate is fairly off-putting. I keep trying to like it again Grin but I can't.
Anyone else have this happen to them?

Very dark chocolate tastes odd and not nice but other chocolate is still as delicious as ever.

But many, many foods taste weird to me now and a bit nasty, including most wine. Also anything made with high temperature vegetable oil.

Most troubling of all, and TMI warning here, my own poo smells sweet and nice. I don’t tell people this IRL because it feels sort of taboo. I don’t like the smell, of course, because it’s poo, but it does smell “nice”. I don’t know how it tastes though…

Bloody Covid.

megletthesecond · 20/01/2024 08:24

I'm pleased to report, no.

Lindy2 · 20/01/2024 08:42

No I still love chocolate. I'd be thinner if I didn't.

A handsoap I used to love now just smells OK rather than lovely but that's been the only long lasting change.

No still enjoy chocolate here. I have become a bit obsessed with finding nice smells though, I don't know if it's because of covid or just a coincidence.

Dingdong90 · 20/01/2024 21:31

Yes!! Me and my partner both went off anything sweet after having covid,it's been 2 years and it's still the same. My partners sense of smell is literally just beginning to come back. I also can't stand the smell of garlic now either when I loved it before.

Jennywren2000 · 20/01/2024 21:34

It made me permanently go off coffee, from having been a coffee addict. It’s bizarre!

Myotherrideisabroom · 21/01/2024 00:38

I've had covid 4 times. First time I lost my taste and smell and it didn't return for 2 years. Since it returned, I cannot bear the smell or taste of tiger bread

Pixiedust1234 · 21/01/2024 01:22

I didn't lose my sense of smell or taste but after covid I stopped eating it and I was a right chocolate fiend before. The only chocolate I like now are the larger Easter eggs for some reason.

I haven't lost weight though as I seem to be a hoola hoop fiend instead Blush

Topseyt123 · 21/01/2024 02:02

No. Covid didn't dampen my taste for chocolate. The complete opposite if anything, and I especially love milk chocolate.

Backfromhols · 21/01/2024 07:57

No, but I wish it had!

prescribingmum · 21/01/2024 08:00

It did temporarily - lost the appeal for everything sweet when could just feel textures and taste nothing. After my taste came back, it took a while to truly enjoy sweet things again but I eventually did

Wenlock12 · 21/01/2024 08:23

It tasted crap for quite a while after Covid (as did courgettes?!?) but it’s back to normal now. I put on a bit of weight after Covid from constantly eating things to see if I could taste them! The general quality of chocolate has declined over the last few years though.

HearMeSnore · 21/01/2024 08:23

No but I went off tea, which indirectly led to me eating less chocolate because a chocolate biscuit without tea is just pointless. The only hot drinks I could bear were hot Ribena or hot water with lemon juice. I'm only now starting to drink tea again, two years later.

Never lost an ounce, though. Sadly Covid did not put me off chips.

madeinmanc · 21/01/2024 08:34

No, but sadly I don't enjoy coffee in the same way as before covid anosmia. I recovered quickly to 90%, then 98% but never 100%. Sure I get the general coffee taste but I don't smell those "notes" that you get in the coffee aroma, the subtlety has gone. It's hard to describe and I don't think everyone even can detect those notes in the flavour anyway, even without covid. I was just lucky before but I can't complain too much, this is how a lot of people experience flavour their whole lives.

And one upside is I don't get so bothered by smells of cooking etc. which I'm sure is because my smelling superpower has gone 😅

I have never been able to stand the smell of it! It smells like sweaty balls or a yeast infection to me 😁

fightingthedogforadonut · 21/01/2024 08:46

No. Although Covid did mess up my sense of smell for a while so everything smelt different. Coffee smelt of smoke, lemons smelt of vinegar etc.

Cosycover · 21/01/2024 09:02

Yes!
I keep trying to eat it hoping my aversion has passed but I end up spitting it out. So strange. I loved chocolate.

EarringsandLipstick · 21/01/2024 09:05

One particular type of dark chocolate only (that I previously ate daily). It now tastes like soap.

I still can eat many other types / brands though so all good!

It's not the same as the changes in ingredients that make a lot of chocolate unpleasant now. It's a completely different, soap-like taste. Awful. (This brand was a supermarket own brand of dark chocolate so very affordable. I now have to buy Lindt 😜 which is crazy prices here in Ireland so I am annoyed by that!)

What have I just read?!

(Definitely continue to keep that piece of info to yourself IRL!)

No. But I went off coffee when I was young and 20 years later I am getting back into it so don't lose hope! I didn't have it for all those years so don't force it and only have it if you really fancy it

It smells even worse than that following covid. It absolutely stinks 😐

HRTQueen · 21/01/2024 18:21

No

but I no longer like cheese apart from mild cheddar and mozzarella

so basically cheese with very little taste and I used to love Stilton/strong cheddar/Gorgonzola etc

Mumofoneandone · 21/01/2024 18:23

It did for a while - interesting that it wasn't only me!!!

ZeppelinTits · 24/01/2024 18:35

Thanks everyone, it's nice in a way to know I'm not alone in this weirdness. I've tried to eat chocolate and I have to force myself which is mad.
I wonder if those of us who noticed this post-Covid all had the same variant or something? Odd. 🤷‍♀️
