A 'friend' sent me a link this morning to news that the current status of the Domesday Clock will be unveiled on 23rd Jan. at the same time, I hear David Cameron talking about red flashing lights on the geopolitical dashboard (m.youtube.com/watch?v=ajr_-axjy5w)

Er...I'm having a moment

Yes Doomsday clock will be updated shortly. What do you mean you’re having a moment? Sorry, what was your question?

WorldWideMess · 19/01/2024 10:36

I suppose i mean, is it unreasonable to be shaken up by this? It all feels quite scary. Apologies if that wasn't clear or if you think I'm being ridiculous

I have a lot of anxiety around this situation so perhaps I shouldn't have posted

It's rubbish and takes no account of events changing in an ever changing world.

WorldWideMess · 19/01/2024 11:08

Thanks I think that's what i needed somebody sensible to say!

That shite. I used to be terrified of it. Now l don’t give a shit.

Who are these people who decide this to terrify people?

I think you'd have to be a bit of a fool not to see how serious things are, but what can be done?

Managing existential fear is something you can practice, humans have had to live with the fear of annihilation forever.

Dabralor · 19/01/2024 11:17

You don't really need a Domesday clock to tell you that everything's gone to crap- just look at our rapidly warming planet and our inability to curb emissions.

But David Cameron is a red herring. There's an election coming so of course the Tories want to make us all scared into voting for the status quo who can lend us stability in a crisis. Nothing like a war this get the voters out! He's a bastard.

Anyway, just live your life. Enjoy each day. Savour what you have, the seasons changing, increasingly lighter days, your loved ones. Try to block out the things you have no control over and cherish yourself and those around you as best you can 🙂.

Who are these people who decide this to terrify people?

The people who decide this are a not for profit organisation called The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. They are made of scientists and experts in climate change, conflict etc and it tends to include a large number of Nobel prize winners. The aim is, I suppose, to terrify people into action. But that only works when people have any power to affect change. Which on a global scale we don't really.

Thanks, you're all right. I definitely need to learn to live with threat, it's not something I'm good at. I also research too much so am v embroiled in what's happening. Need to take a step back. The frustration of having the power to exact the change that the experts are calling for is very intense!

Doing something positive then switching off to give your nervous system a break is the basic advice.

If you're not going to do anything, it is pointless researching yourself into a nervous breakdown!

Phonedown · 19/01/2024 11:28

When I'm feeling overwhelmed by world events I actively disengage from MSM and social media. I ground myself in the every day - I bake, I cook, I walk, I look after my children, I watch films and read books with fairly light hearted themes. Love the best life you can being respectful to the planet as much as you can and loving those around you. That's literally all we can do.

keylemon · 19/01/2024 11:34

If you are anxious try to stay clear of the news or announcements. I would said news are mainly bad news.

You can try and do something about it.

This is a great explanation.

I try to remember that a bunch of scientists moving a hand a few cm on a giant clock, enabling them all to write articles about it for various places for a fee, will not mean the world will end

notprincehamlet · 19/01/2024 13:24

No that's just his face
There's an election coming so of course the Tories want to make us all scared into voting for the status quo who can lend us stability in a crisis. Nothing like a war this get the voters out! He's a bastard.
This. There's a reason they've put his batteries back in and sent him all shiny-faced, ham-fisted and empty-headed lumbering towards the world's most acute crises - if you want to exacerbate a sensitive situation for your own political reasons just wave Cameron at it.

Gosh this did make me laugh! Didn't think I'd be laughing when I started this thread Smile

We've been being threatened with nuclear attack for 18 months now and nothing happens. It won't happen because it was going on all through the Cold War and we even had leaflets delivered through our doors from the government to tell us what to do in the event of a nuclear attack. Nothing happened. It almost happened in 1983, but we're all still here.
Wars have been going on in the middle east for over 100 years now. China are going down the toilet economically, so I doubt they have the will or the means to take over the world.
We're all still here. The most likely thing that'll happen is that domestic terrorism will increase, but, again, we lived with that from the IRA for years.
Nothing changes and we're all still here.
The people we do need to fear are our incompetent and morally bankrupt government leaders who are literally killing people through their, greed, mismanagement and public service decimation.
