Can't Celebrate Anywhere Else

I paid off my mortgage this morning.

Life is shit in general, the world and the climate are going to hell in a fast car, I work in an industry that is historically poorly paid and most of my colleagues will never own a property, let alone pay it off. And amongst my friends, two are going through nasty divorces and another is likely being made redundant very soon.

Celebrating in 'public' would be a bit crass, so in an anonymous forum, can I just say whoop whoop? 🍾

Well done! I dream of that day (10 years to go!)

fishfingersandtoes · 18/01/2024 08:01

Yay! Congratulations!

YireosDodeAver · 18/01/2024 08:04

Well done! It's a huge thing to achieve and gives you security for your eventual retirement knowing you don't have housing costs.

I've been planning that when we reach that time we will keep putting the same amount we had been putting into mortgage into savings_pension instead - is that your plan or are you going to enjoy the spare cash more immediately?

ErrolTheDragon · 18/01/2024 08:04

Well done! It is a relief, but you're right not something you can mention IRL.
(And as a total aside, something last week reminded me of the description 'spiky hate potato' so it's nice serendipity for me to see your name crop up. Grin)

rainbowoldtrout · 18/01/2024 08:11

Well done!
My top tip- put the mortgage amount in a savings account. You have managed without this amount so far so keep going living off what ever you are used to
Watch your savings build up
I wish I'd done this.

Walkerbean16 · 18/01/2024 08:12

Wow that's amazing, must be such a good feeling :)

NotFastButFurious · 18/01/2024 08:14

woohoo! Well done!

NotAnysmore · 18/01/2024 08:14

Aahh congratulations. What an amazing achievement.

I'm not sure I'll ever have that celebration (until we downsize once DC have left home) so a huge well done to you!!

Although in this climate I feel like me even moaning that we wont pay off ours seems a tactless moan as I know so many people who are trapped renting. It's such a crap situation.

Toomuch44 · 18/01/2024 08:26

That's great news and it'll be nice to have money for other things.

We always rounded ours up, not really a lot at the time, but it made all the difference to paying it off earlier.

MoonWoman69 · 18/01/2024 08:32

🍾🥂 Congratulations!!! It's a great feeling isn't it?! 🥂🍾

CMOTDibbler · 18/01/2024 08:36

Congratulations! We've just paid ours off, and it feels amazing

theduchessofspork · 18/01/2024 08:38

Bloody brilliant OP 🥳

and well done for making that happen

CharlotteStreetW1 · 18/01/2024 08:39

Congratulations! It's such a good feeling.

I remember when we paid ours off, I couldn't say anything as colleagues (who are also friends) were struggling. I wanted to shout it from the rooftops.

ohdearohdearohdearoh · 18/01/2024 08:41

Worthy of celebrating. Well done you. Glad to see no negative comments here yet.... but there's still time!
Pour yourself a large glass of something later and celebrate 🍾

KnickerlessParsons · 18/01/2024 16:25

We paid ours off about 2 weeks ago. It's a great feeling isn't it.
Congratulations. 🥂

Molly0 · 18/01/2024 16:43

Well done! Gives you more options jobwise too.

skippy67 · 18/01/2024 17:00

Congrats! It's a fab feeling isn't it? 😁😁

GildedAge · 18/01/2024 17:00

Well done, we paid ours off last year. Is it just you living in the house, dh the dc and I went out for a meal to celebrate. I understand your rationale but it’s a shame if no one on your life would be happy to hear your news.

coodawoodashooda · 18/01/2024 17:10

Amazing!

Florida28 · 18/01/2024 17:13

Congratulations 🍾must feel great. We have 3.5 years left of ours, then plan to save those payments for another 5.5 years before retirement 😊

WineIsNotGoodForMe · 18/01/2024 17:20

Brilliant x

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 18/01/2024 17:23

🥂🍾congratulations 🥳

what's the plan now then?

@GildedAge there probably would be, but it just feels wrong to bring it up when people aren't in a good place themselves I guess.

i would still want to congratulate/celebrate with friends even if I was in a bad place.

MuchTooTired · 18/01/2024 17:35

Congratulations 🥳

I’m still looking at another 31 years until mine is cleared, but you have done fabulously and should be very proud of yourself!!

Belindabelle · 18/01/2024 17:45

Congratulations.

How much were your monthly payments and what do you plan to do with the ‘extra’ money every month?

Obviously don’t answer if you don’t want to.
